For an Apple TV 4K home theater, the main alternatives to HomePod are a Dolby Atmos-compatible soundbar or an Atmos-enabled AV receiver with separate speakers. A soundbar is the simpler, smaller option; a receiver system offers a more configurable speaker setup. Neither is automatically compatible with every TV: the connection path must support the audio formats you want.
What can replace HomePod in an Apple TV 4K theater?
Apple documents both Dolby Atmos-compatible soundbars and Atmos-enabled AV receivers as home theater setups for Apple TV 4K. The right choice depends on whether you prefer a single bar or separate speakers, and on how your TV routes audio.

- Soundbar: A single unit beneath the TV, often with optional subwoofer or surround components. It is the most straightforward alternative category if you want fewer separate speakers.
- AV receiver and speakers: A receiver connects the sources and speakers, allowing a separate-speaker arrangement. Confirm the receiver supports Atmos and that its inputs, TV connection, and speakers suit your setup.
- AirPlay speakers: These may be useful for some listening, but Apple documents limitations when using non-HomePod AirPlay speakers as Apple TV audio output; they are not a direct equivalent to a wired home-theater system.
Apple TV 4K lists Dolby Digital 5.1, E-AC-3 Dolby Digital Plus 7.1, and Dolby Atmos among its audio formats. What you actually hear depends on the content and every compatible device and connection in the signal path. Apple says Apple TV 4K automatically plays the highest-quality sound supported by the system and available in the content: Apple’s Dolby Atmos and surround-sound setup guidance.
Soundbar alternative: Sonos Beam (Gen 2)
The Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is a compact soundbar option to consider if you want a single-bar setup. Sonos lists it among its home theater products that support Dolby Atmos and describes an HDMI eARC connection. Atmos playback still depends on a compatible TV connection and a supported audio source and content path; the product alone cannot guarantee Atmos with every television.

Before choosing it, check your TV’s manual for ARC/eARC support and audio pass-through behavior, and confirm the Beam’s connection requirements for your particular setup. Sonos provides its Beam product details, Atmos playback requirements, and TV requirements for home theater products.
Receiver alternative: separate speakers and an Atmos receiver
An Atmos-enabled AV receiver is a documented Apple TV setup type for people who want a receiver and separate speakers rather than a single soundbar. This route can accommodate a more configurable speaker layout, but compatibility must be checked across the receiver, TV, speakers, and Apple TV connection. Verify the receiver’s supported formats and HDMI inputs, and whether the TV can pass the desired audio format through to it.

Check the HDMI path before buying
A TV’s ARC or eARC port does not by itself prove that the TV passes Atmos from Apple TV to a connected soundbar or receiver. Apple cautions that most televisions do not support Atmos pass-through to soundbars and receivers, and recommends connecting Apple TV 4K directly to the soundbar or receiver when needed. Apple also states: “Apple TV 4K uses a high bandwidth form of Dolby Atmos that doesn’t work over ARC connections.” Review the manuals for your exact TV and audio device, including eARC behavior and direct HDMI-input compatibility, before choosing how to wire the system. See Apple’s soundbar and receiver connection guidance.
- Check the TV manual for ARC/eARC ports and the audio formats it can pass through.
- Check the soundbar or receiver manual for supported formats, HDMI inputs, and whether Apple TV can connect directly to it.
- Choose a connection path supported by all devices. If the TV cannot pass the needed Atmos signal, consider connecting Apple TV 4K directly to the soundbar or receiver, as Apple recommends where necessary.
- After connecting the devices, verify the format available from the content and setup rather than assuming that an Atmos label on one component guarantees Atmos playback.
How to choose between the options
| Option | System type and footprint | Connection checks | Expansion and control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atmos-compatible soundbar | One bar; compact compared with separate-speaker systems | Confirm TV ARC/eARC and pass-through, or direct HDMI compatibility | Optional subwoofer or surrounds vary by model; verify the model’s HDMI CEC, remote, and app support |
| Atmos-enabled AV receiver | Receiver with separate speakers; more components and configuration | Confirm receiver inputs, TV pass-through, and format support across the complete path | Speaker layout and expansion depend on the specific receiver and speakers; check control features for the models you choose |
| Non-HomePod AirPlay speakers | Wireless speakers rather than the documented wired soundbar/receiver path | Apple documents this use with limitations; it is not a substitute for checking a theater audio connection | Apple TV system alerts and game sounds do not play through non-HomePod AirPlay speakers |
Apple says non-HomePod AirPlay speakers do not play Apple TV system alerts or game sounds; those sounds come from the TV speakers. For TV audio routed over eARC into Apple TV, Apple specifies Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) and an eARC-capable TV. Details are in Apple’s soundbar and receiver setup guidance.
