The best hobby knife blade depends first on the handle you own, then on the material and cut. For detailed paper craft and general modelmaking, OLFA’s KB Multi-Purpose Art Blade is a documented option if you have an AK-4 or AK-1/5B. For straight cuts in rigid materials such as plastic, balsa, or basswood, OLFA’s serrated KB4-WS is the specialist choice—but it fits the AK-4 only. Neither is a universal hobby-knife blade.
Check your handle before choosing a blade
Hobby knife blades are not interchangeable by default. Before buying, identify the exact knife model and consult its manufacturer’s compatibility information. A blade that suits your material is still the wrong choice if it does not fit your handle.

For straight cuts in rigid material
For rigid materials such as plastic, balsa, or basswood, OLFA positions the KB4-WS Wide Saw Art Blade for straight cuts. Its serrated, wide saw profile serves a different task from the KB art blade, and OLFA lists it for the AK-4 only. Choose it for that use case rather than treating it as an all-purpose upgrade.
For a limited-exposure beginner design
The ESKB-1 is intended for beginner craft use and has a plastic covering designed to limit how much blade is exposed. It is compatible only with the OLFA ESK-1. Limited exposure is a design feature, not a guarantee against injury; handle and store the knife carefully.

When should you replace a hobby knife blade?
There is no fixed replacement interval established for these blades. X-ACTO says replacement frequency depends on the material: cardboard or foam board may call for very frequent changes, while paper generally allows longer use. Its guidance is to replace blades frequently enough to maintain precision, rather than follow a universal calendar or cut-count rule. See X-ACTO’s blade-change FAQ.
Use cut quality as a practical cue: if the blade no longer makes the controlled cut your project needs, stop and replace it with the correct compatible blade. The source does not provide a numerical wear threshold, so a specific number of cuts would be misleading.

Replace and discard blades deliberately
Follow the knife manufacturer’s instructions for changing a blade; the exact procedure depends on the handle. X-ACTO addresses replacement in its blade FAQ. For disposal, X-ACTO recommends using its blade dispenser or wrapping a spent blade in tape before discarding it.
