The best headphones for sleeping on your side are the ones that do not create uncomfortable pressure where your ear meets the pillow. Start by choosing a format: compact in-ear sleep earbuds, thin headphones that rest outside the ear, or a fabric headband with flat speakers. Each feels different, and no design guarantees better sleep or suits every sleeper.
For a starting comparison, consider soundcore Sleep A20 earbuds, SleepPhones’ speaker headband, and DUBSLABS Bedphones, which sit outside the ear. Sleep Foundation’s July 31, 2026 guide also names Ozlo Sleepbuds 2 and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds, but those editorial picks are not universal recommendations. Your ear shape, pillow firmness, sleep position, and tolerance for in-ear devices matter more than a ranking.
Which headphone format is most comfortable for side sleeping?
Side sleeping puts a pillow against the side of your head. A conventional earbud can press into the ear canal or protrude from the outer ear; an over-ear cup can be bulky in that position. Sleep-focused designs reduce or relocate that contact, but they do not eliminate individual fit differences. Sleep Foundation notes that headband and sleep-mask headphones can be especially comfortable for side sleepers, while earbuds may bother people who dislike the sensation of something in the ear. Sleep Foundation’s guide is an editorial selection, not a controlled comfort comparison.
In-ear sleep earbuds
These are compact earbuds designed for sleep, often with low-profile tips. They may be a good fit if you want wireless playback without a headband, but pillow pressure and ear-canal sensitivity can still be issues. Check whether they stream ordinary audio, use built-in masking sounds, or offer both.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Thin outside-ear headphones
These sit against the outer ear rather than sealing into the ear canal. They avoid an in-ear fit, but their position and any wire or retaining structure can still be noticeable against a pillow.
Fabric headbands with flat speakers
A soft band holds flat speakers over the ears. This avoids inserting a device into the ear canal and can spread contact across fabric, but the band may feel warm, shift during the night, or fit differently depending on head size and pillow.

Sleep A20: a compact in-ear option
Sleep A20 makes sense to consider if you want an earbud-style device with Bluetooth streaming plus built-in masking audio. Its manufacturer lists passive noise blocking, not active noise cancellation, and says calls are unsupported. If you dislike ear-canal pressure or your pillow pushes earbuds inward, its sleep-focused design alone does not guarantee a comfortable fit.

SleepPhones: speakers held by a fabric band
SleepPhones offers a different approach: two ultra-flat removable speakers inside a fabric headband. The company’s catalog describes Classic as corded and Wireless as using a Bluetooth module; Effortless adds Bluetooth pairing and an induction charging base. A band can avoid a hard component protruding directly into the ear, although warmth, fit, and shifting are worth considering. SleepPhones product catalog.
Bedphones: a thin outside-ear design
Sleep Foundation describes Bedphones as resting on the outside of the ear, with memory wire and a thickness under a quarter inch. Its guide reports wired and wireless versions and up to 13 hours for the wireless model. This style may suit someone who does not want an ear-canal device or a headband; confirm the current version and details with the manufacturer before buying, as the cited information is from the guide.

Noise masking, passive blocking, and ANC are different
These terms describe different approaches, not interchangeable promises:
Best Value

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Passive noise blocking comes from the physical fit of an earbud or other barrier. How much sound it reduces depends on the seal and the sound itself.
- Noise masking plays sound—such as steady noise or another soundscape—to make some disturbances less noticeable. It does not mean the disturbance is cancelled or that a sleep disorder is treated.
- Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses electronics to reduce some incoming sound. It does not block every sound, and the fit and design still affect comfort. Sleep Foundation lists Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds as its ANC pick.
Bose’s 2020 announcement of Sleepbuds II described a masking approach rather than ANC. Bose Health Division head Steve Romine said: “Bose Sleepbuds II use advancements in our proprietary noise masking technology because covering sound — not cancelling it — is a better solution for sleeping,” Bose’s 2020 release. That is the company executive’s stated view, not neutral consensus. Bose also reported results from a study with the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and UCHealth CARE Innovation Center: 100% of participants said masking worked against common disturbances; 86% said the product helped them fall asleep more easily; 76% said it helped them stay asleep; and 80% reported an overall improvement in sleep quality. These are Bose-reported participant responses in that study context, not general clinical proof.
Why Bose Sleepbuds II are legacy context
Bose’s 2020 release described Sleepbuds II as quarter-inch deep, with 10 hours of runtime and noise masking rather than ANC. Bose support reports that Sleepbuds were discontinued in 2023 and the app was removed for download on July 21, 2025. That makes the older model an uncertain choice for a new purchase: availability and app access matter, even if a used or remaining unit can be found. Bose’s release.
Quick Recap
Check fit and function before choosing
- Pillow pressure: Consider whether the part touching your ear is a tip, a thin outside-ear speaker, or a fabric-covered flat speaker. A firmer pillow can make protrusions more noticeable.
- In-ear tolerance: If earbuds bother you while awake, a low-profile sleep model may still feel intrusive overnight. Consider a headband or outside-ear style instead.
- Changing positions: If you roll from side to side, notice whether a band shifts, a speaker moves, or an earbud becomes uncomfortable on the other side.
- Heat and fit: Fabric can feel warm; a tight band can be distracting. Ear shape also affects earbud fit and passive isolation.
- Audio needs: Check whether you need streaming, built-in masking sounds, calls, or a wired connection. Sleep A20’s manufacturer says calls are unsupported; SleepPhones Classic is corded, while its Wireless model uses Bluetooth.
- Battery and charging: Match the stated runtime and charging method to how you plan to use the device. Manufacturer runtime figures are specifications, not a promise of the same result in every use pattern.
- Noise expectations: Decide whether you want physical sound reduction, masking playback, or ANC; none should be assumed to eliminate every disturbance.
- Purchase details: Verify current model availability, compatibility with your phone or audio source, specifications, and return policy. Listings and product terms can change.
