For a long or technical night route, prioritize a stable fit, a useful beam and enough runtime at the setting you will actually use—not just the biggest lumen number. The Petzl NAO RL is a high-output option with a rear battery and adaptive lighting; the Black Diamond Spot offers a choice of AAA cells or a separately sold rechargeable battery. For short walks or camp use, a simpler, lighter lamp may be a better match.
How to choose a head torch for your route
Match the beam to the terrain
A maximum-lumen rating describes peak output, not how well a lamp lights a path. On a technical trail, look for a beam that gives you usable distance while also illuminating nearby footing; for camp tasks or short walks, a broad close-range flood beam and straightforward controls may matter more. Compare distance and runtime at the same mode where manufacturers provide those figures.
Think about pace and stability
Running and hiking over uneven ground make fit and movement important. Check the total weight, strap adjustment and how the lamp balances from front to rear. Rear battery placement is one way to distribute components, but it does not guarantee comfort for every head or running style. Rear red lighting can also help make a runner more visible from behind.
Plan for the whole outing
Ask whether you can recharge during the trip, would rather carry a spare pack, or want to use readily available replaceable cells. A rechargeable lamp can be convenient for regular use; a dual-fuel model or a compatible spare battery can make a longer outing easier to plan. Check whether the battery is included and whether a spare is sold separately.

How to read runtime and battery claims
Compare the mode, not just the headline figure
For the NAO RL, Petzl states a five-hour burn time at its standard lighting level in Standard Lighting mode and two hours at maximum power in that mode. Its Reactive Lighting table gives different runtime, brightness and distance ranges. Those figures describe different operating modes, so do not treat the five-hour figure as a promise of five hours at maximum output. Use Petzl’s mode-specific NAO RL specifications to plan around the setting you expect to use.

Understand what “runtime” means
Published burn time may end when output has dimmed substantially rather than when the lamp has stopped producing any light. Outdoor Life’s 2026 review says its testers ran lamps at maximum setting and recorded time to failure as a general battery-use comparison; the publication also describes freezing lamps for one hour and exposing most models to sprinkling rain for half an hour before throwing a cup of water on them. These are Outdoor Life’s tests, not a direct comparison of every model listed here. Its method is useful context when interpreting manufacturer burn-time claims, but does not make figures from different makers directly comparable.

- Recharge between outings: USB-C charging is listed for the NAO RL.
- Carry a compatible spare: Petzl says the NAO RL’s R1 spare battery is available separately.
- Use replaceable cells: The Spot can use three AAA batteries, or a separately sold BD 1500 rechargeable pack.
For either spare-battery approach, verify availability and compatibility for the exact regional model before a trip.

Water protection is not one-size-fits-all
IP ratings should be read as stated by the manufacturer, not collapsed into a general claim that a lamp is “waterproof.” Petzl describes the NAO RL as IPX4 weather resistant. Black Diamond gives the Spot an IPX7 rating and specifies a test condition: operation up to 1 meter underwater for 30 minutes. These are different ratings and descriptions; do not assume they promise equivalent protection in rain, immersion or real-world use.

For technical trails or ultrarunning
Start by checking usable beam distance, the spread of the light, stability while moving and runtime in your likely mode. The NAO RL’s high maximum output, Reactive Lighting and separately available spare make it a candidate for a longer route, but weigh those features against its mode-specific runtime and your ability to recharge or carry a spare. iRunFar’s guide, updated June 16, 2026, names the NAO RL as its overall and ultrarunning favorite and the Nitecore UT27 MCT Pro for trail running. Those are that guide’s editorial picks, not a universal ranking.

For short walks and camp use
Peak brightness may be less important than comfortable weight, close-range flood lighting and controls you can operate simply. Petzl’s catalogue lists the 450-lumen Tikka Core as a compact rechargeable model with red lighting, but check its current product page for the detailed battery, runtime and water specifications relevant to your needs.

When battery flexibility matters most
The Spot is worth considering if choosing between AAA cells and a rechargeable pack suits how you travel. Its IPX7 rating and stated immersion test are specific to this model’s manufacturer listing; verify the regional version and battery contents before purchase.
For road running and other options
iRunFar highlights the Black Diamond Sprinter 500 for road running and notes its rear blinking red light. T3’s 2026 guide also discusses models including Petzl Swift RL 2, Black Diamond Distance LT 1100 and Ledlenser HF8R Signature. Treat these as editorial coverage rather than a standardized test ranking, and confirm the exact generation and regional specifications before comparing products.
