There is no universal set of HDR, refresh-rate, or color values for every 4K OLED gaming monitor. Set the source device to the highest resolution and refresh rate supported by the monitor, selected input, and connection together; enable compatible variable refresh rate (VRR); and calibrate HDR with the game or platform’s test patterns. For SDR, start with a neutral picture preset and avoid changing color controls without a specific target.

Set up the monitor and source in the right order

Begin with the exact monitor manual and the input you plan to use. A monitor’s advertised maximum may not be available at every resolution or on every port, and some on-screen display (OSD) features impose additional restrictions. For example, the ASUS PG27UCDM manual limits OLED Anti-Flicker to specified refresh rates and input sources. Check the manual for your model before enabling a feature that could conflict with your preferred mode: ASUS PG27UCDM User Guide.

  1. Choose the active resolution and refresh rate. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the monitor, and choose the highest refresh rate offered for the current setup. The available modes depend on the display, input, connection, and selected resolution. See Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate instructions.
  2. Enable VRR if both ends support it. VRR adapts the display’s refresh rate to supported content frame rates. Confirm that the monitor and source support the same VRR implementation, and check the manual for mode conflicts. Microsoft’s overview is in its refresh-rate guidance.
  3. Turn on HDR for HDR games. In Windows, select the HDR display and go to Settings > System > Display to turn on HDR. Use an HDR mode supported by the monitor; available formats and OSD labels vary by model. Microsoft explains the Windows controls in HDR settings in Windows.

Calibrate HDR with test patterns

Do not rely on a generic brightness number. On Windows 11, run the Windows HDR Calibration app while HDR is enabled and follow its patterns for the darkest visible detail, brightest visible detail, and maximum display brightness. Adjust the optional saturation control only if the result needs it; Microsoft notes that its effect depends on the display. The calibration steps and requirements are in Microsoft’s HDR Calibration app guide.

If a game has its own HDR setup screen, use its patterns as well. Set black detail and highlight clipping according to what the pattern shows, rather than raising brightness until the image looks more vivid. Preserving detail in the brightest areas matters more than making every highlight appear as bright as possible.

Balance SDR brightness separately

When Windows HDR is on, SDR desktop content may look too bright or too dark compared with HDR content. Windows provides an SDR/HDR balance slider for the selected display. Adjust it to suit your screen and viewing preference; Microsoft says the result varies by display make and model, so there is no universal slider position. See Microsoft’s HDR settings guide.

Keep color settings restrained

For ordinary SDR gaming, begin with a neutral or standard picture preset. Avoid increasing saturation or changing color temperature without a calibration target, since a value that looks right on one monitor may be inaccurate on another. For HDR, select the display’s supported HDR mode and use the game or platform calibration workflow. OSD labels and available controls differ by model; the PG27UCDM manual is an example of model-specific controls and restrictions.

Why settings do not transfer cleanly between models

Specifications and features vary even among 4K OLED monitors. For example, ASUS lists its ROG Swift OLED PG48UQ as a 3840 × 2160 display with HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC, a 138 Hz overclocked refresh rate, and 98% DCI-P3 color gamut. Those figures describe that named model, not a recommended setting or a category-wide default: ASUS ROG Swift OLED PG48UQ specifications.

When comparing monitors or checking your current setup, verify the supported resolution and refresh rate for the input in use, VRR support and operating range, HDR formats and behavior, and available color-space or calibration features. A headline HDR format or refresh-rate figure alone does not establish that the same mode will work through your particular source and connection. ASUS’s PG32UCDM product page, for instance, identifies HDR10 and Dolby Vision support for that model; it should not be taken as a specification for other displays.
