The best choice depends on whether your group wants to fight each other, learn competitive play together, or cooperate against AI. For high-pressure head-to-head matches, choose StarCraft II 1v1; for shared-control co-op, try its Archon Mode. Age of Empires IV documents co-op against AI and has a beginner-friendly tutorial, while Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition offers unranked Quick Play for learning competitive maps and settings. Company of Heroes 3 has a co-op wave-defense mode described in its announcements, but check its current mode and lobby status before planning around it.
Choose by the kind of challenge you want
| Game and mode | How friends play together | Best fit |

| StarCraft II Archon Mode | Two friends share control of one base and army | Players who want to coordinate rather than fight each other. Blizzard’s description. |
| Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition Quick Play or custom game | Learn competitive maps and settings in unranked Quick Play, or make a private game with friends against AI or community members | Groups that want to practice competitive play without starting in ranked matches. | Stormgate | Its Steam page describes PvP and three-player co-op | Not a dependable pick until current online service is confirmed: a report said online modes were due to be suspended at the end of April 2026, and service status as of October 2026 is not established here. Steam page. |
For the toughest direct competition: StarCraft II 1v1
If the point is to test each other, a one-on-one match is the clearest fit. Blizzard identifies 1v1 as StarCraft II’s most competitive mode, making it the natural pick for friends who welcome a demanding, direct contest. That intensity can make differences in experience more noticeable than in a cooperative game; choose it because both players want the challenge, not as a gentle introduction.
For shared-control co-op: StarCraft II Archon Mode
Archon Mode changes the relationship between teammates: two friends control the same base and army in a 1v1 game. Blizzard’s description makes the shared-control format explicit. It is a way to tackle a competitive RTS together, with coordination built into the play, rather than queueing as opponents.

Quick Play is officially described as an unranked way to learn competitive maps and settings. That gives friends a practice-oriented option without making ranked competition the starting point. For a private group, custom games can pit friends against AI or community members, according to the game’s official announcement.
#1 Best Overall
For co-op against AI and a gentler on-ramp: Age of Empires IV
The official quickstart guide describes co-op against AI, so friends can cooperate in a skirmish rather than compete against one another. For an inexperienced player, the developer specifically recommends Mission Zero: “a great way to easily learn the basics.” That makes Age of Empires IV the clearest documented choice here when one friend wants help getting comfortable with RTS fundamentals before taking on a tougher match.
For tactical wave defense: Company of Heroes 3 Final Stand
Official announcements describe Final Stand as wave defense playable solo or with a friend. It offers a cooperative structure distinct from competing over a map or sharing control in a standard 1v1. Mode details and co-op lobby behavior can change with updates, so check recent official patch notes or announcements before organizing a session around it.

Why Stormgate needs a current-status check
Stormgate’s Steam page lists PvP and three-player co-op, but a report said its online modes were due to be suspended at the end of April 2026. Whether service resumed by October 2026 is not established by the available information. Treat it as an uncertain option until an official current status notice confirms online play is operating; its listed modes alone do not establish present availability.

What this comparison can—and cannot—tell you
These recommendations compare documented mode structures and onboarding, not objective game quality. The cited information does not establish comparable current player populations, queue times, balance, or difficulty settings, so it cannot identify which game has the liveliest matchmaking or the fairest competition. For a demanding session, decide first whether your group wants opponents, allies against AI, or a shared-control challenge, then confirm any mode whose current operation may have changed.
