Google TV Streamer (4K) is the best overall Google TV box for most buyers in 2026. It is Google’s current first-party set-top box, with 4K output, 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, built-in Ethernet, a remote finder and Matter/Thread smart-home support. US buyers who mainly want the lowest capable price should also consider the Onn 4K Pro (2026), while the Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) is a sensible regional alternative where it is officially sold.

What a Google TV box is—and what this guide covers

A Google TV box is an external streaming device that connects to a television or monitor through HDMI and runs Google TV. It is different from a television with Google TV built in: an external box can be replaced or moved without replacing the display, and it can add current software, more storage or better connectivity to an older screen.

This guide covers dedicated boxes and dongle-style devices that run Google TV. It does not rank televisions with Google TV integrated. The recommendations reflect specifications published by Google, a 2026 Android Authority review of the Onn 4K Pro, and Cinco Días’ report of the Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) launch in Spain. Prices, stock, sellers and regional support can change, so check the listing in your country before ordering.

1. Google TV Streamer (4K): best overall

The Google TV Streamer (4K) is the straightforward choice when you want Google’s current external Google TV hardware rather than a discontinued dongle. Google’s specifications list up to 4K resolution, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, Ethernet, and Matter and Thread capability. Google also says its CPU is 22% faster than the Chromecast with Google TV (4K).

#1 Best Overall
Google Streamer 4K – Fast Streaming Entertainment with Voice Search Remote, Watch Movies, Shows, Live Channels and Netflix in HDR, Smart Home Control, 32 GB Storage, Porcelain
  • The Google TV Streamer (4K) delivers your favorite entertainment quickly, easily, and personalized to you[1,2]
  • HDMI 2.1 cable required (sold separately)
  • See movies and TV shows from all your services right from your home screen[2]; and find new things to watch with tailored recommendations for everyone in your home based on their interests and viewing habits
  • Watch live TV and access over 800 free channels from Pluto TV, Tubi, and more[3]; if you find an interesting show or movie on your TV, mobile app, or Google search, you can easily add it to your watchlist, so it’s ready when you are[2]
  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Why it is the default recommendation

  • More headroom: Google lists four times the Chromecast’s storage (32 GB versus 8 GB) and twice its memory (4 GB versus 2 GB). That leaves more room for apps and reduces the chance that a heavily used box will run out of free space.
  • Wired networking: Built-in Ethernet provides a stable alternative to Wi-Fi for a television in a crowded wireless environment, a room far from the router or a home server.
  • Current smart-home platform: Matter and Thread support can let the box participate in a compatible smart-home setup instead of serving only as a video player.
  • Remote finder: The redesigned remote includes a way to locate it when it disappears between cushions.
  • Set-top-box layout: Its box form keeps the HDMI connection and power lead behind or beside the television rather than hanging from the HDMI port like a dongle.

Price, cable and display requirements

Google’s support information lists a US price of $99.99 for the Google TV Streamer (4K). That is a listed price, not a guarantee of today’s retail price or stock. Google says the device works with any TV or display that has HDMI, but recommends a 4K TV for the best experience. An Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1-certified cable is recommended for optimal performance and is sold separately.

The box cannot upgrade the source material or display. Google notes that actual playback resolution is constrained by both the television and the content: a 1080p television will not show a 4K picture, and a non-4K stream remains non-4K even when the box is connected to a 4K panel.

Who should buy it

Choose the Streamer when you want first-party Google hardware, substantial app storage, Ethernet, or Matter/Thread integration; when several household members will install apps; or when you plan to keep the box for years. It is also the least ambiguous option for buyers who want Google’s current product rather than remaining stock of an older Chromecast.

2. Onn 4K Pro (2026): best US value when available

Android Authority’s 2026 review reports the Onn 4K Pro at a $59.98 MSRP. The review lists 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage, Wi-Fi 6, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, a USB-A port, a remote finder and Ethernet. Its Ethernet connection is capped at 100 Mbps, compared with 1 Gbps on the Google TV Streamer according to the same review.

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Why value-focused buyers may prefer it

At the reported MSRP, the Onn offers the same listed 32 GB storage capacity as Google’s box for substantially less money, while retaining 4K, Dolby Vision/Atmos and wired networking. USB-A is useful for compatible local-storage or accessory scenarios that are not available on a simple HDMI dongle. Wi-Fi 6 can help in a modern wireless network, although the benefit depends on the router, distance and interference in your home.

Android Authority’s reviewer favored the lower-cost device for many buyers but noted that more RAM would have been desirable, writing: “In a perfect world, a little more RAM would have been great.” Treat that as the publication’s review judgment, not an independent laboratory benchmark.

Trade-offs versus the Google box

  • Slower wired ceiling: 100 Mbps Ethernet is ample for ordinary streaming, but it offers less headroom than the Streamer’s 1 Gbps connection for local-network transfers or unusually demanding home-network use.
  • Regional access: The device is a US-focused option, and availability outside the United States is limited or absent. Confirm that the seller supports your country, power standard and warranty.
  • Third-party status: It is not Google hardware. Software support, retail service and replacement policies come from the manufacturer and retailer rather than Google.
  • Memory: The review lists 3 GB RAM, between the Streamer’s 4 GB and the Chromecast’s 2 GB. That is a specification difference, not proof of a particular speed advantage in every app.

3. Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen): a regional format-and-codec option

Cinco Días reported the Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) launching in Spain at €69.99 in May 2025. That report lists Google TV, 4K output, Wi-Fi 6, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage.

The combination is attractive when the box is officially available at a competitive local price and your television or receiver supports the listed HDR and audio formats. The €69.99 figure is historical Spanish launch pricing; it should not be treated as the current price in Spain or any other country. Check regional firmware, language support, warranty coverage and streaming-service certification before buying an imported unit.

When it makes sense

  • You live in a market where Xiaomi sells this model through an authorized channel.
  • Your priority is 32 GB of storage and broad HDR/audio format support at a mid-range price.
  • You do not need the Streamer’s 4 GB RAM, remote-finder ecosystem or Google’s Matter/Thread features.

4. Chromecast with Google TV (4K): compact, but now a legacy choice

Google’s comparison information lists Chromecast with Google TV (4K) with up to 4K output, Dolby Vision and HDR10+, 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage. Its dongle form is convenient behind a wall-mounted television and it remains a reasonable purchase only when you find legitimate, supported stock at a clearly lower price.

Google’s support page lists US prices of $49.99 for the 4K model and $29.99 for Chromecast with Google TV (HD). Those are Google’s listed figures and may not match current retail pricing or availability. The HD model is limited to HD-class output and is not a substitute for a 4K box if you own a 4K television and want 4K playback.

The main compromise is capacity. Eight gigabytes of storage and 2 GB of RAM leave less room for large apps and future updates than the newer Streamer or the Onn and Xiaomi alternatives. Confirm the seller’s condition, return policy and software-support expectations because current inventory was not checked.

How to choose the right Google TV box

Start with the television and content

Check the TV’s HDMI version, supported resolution, HDR formats and audio-return setup before paying for features it cannot use. A 4K box is worthwhile with a 4K display and 4K services, but it does not convert HD video into native 4K. Dolby Vision or HDR10+ also requires compatible content and a display that accepts that format.

  • Advanced Connectivity & Decoding: Features dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4GHz/5GHz), Bluetooth 5.2, HDMI 2.1, and USB 2.0 ports. Supports decoding of 4K 60FPS video formats and Google Cast for screen mirroring
  • Complete Setup Included: Comes with Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen), voice remote control, power adapter, HDMI cable, and user manual. Compact design (95.25 x 95.25 x 16.7 mm) for discreet placement

Decide whether wired networking matters

Use Ethernet when the box is far from the router, the wireless spectrum is crowded, or you stream from a local server. The Streamer’s reported 1 Gbps Ethernet gives the most wired headroom. The Onn’s 100 Mbps port is generally adequate for internet streaming but is less suitable for very large local transfers. If Ethernet is unnecessary, Wi-Fi 6 on the Onn or Xiaomi can be a useful modern-network feature.

Budget for storage, not just resolution

Streaming resolution is visible on the specification sheet, but storage affects daily use. The Streamer, Onn and Xiaomi each list 32 GB, while Chromecast with Google TV (4K) lists 8 GB. More space helps if you install many services, games or media tools and leaves room for updates. RAM is similarly a capacity indicator, not a guarantee of app performance: the cited figures are 4 GB for Streamer, 3 GB for Onn and 2 GB for Xiaomi and Chromecast.

Consider remotes and household routines

A remote finder is valuable in a family room where the controller regularly disappears. Google’s Streamer and the Onn review both include that feature. Also check button layout, voice-control language and whether the remote can control your television and receiver; those details can vary by market and software version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose smart-home features deliberately

If you use Matter accessories or Thread-based devices, the Streamer’s listed Matter/Thread capability can reduce the need for another compatible hub. If smart-home control is irrelevant, do not pay extra solely for that feature.

How to set up a Google TV box

  1. Confirm the connection: Make sure the television has an available HDMI input and that its power outlet can reach the box. For the Streamer, obtain an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1-certified cable; Google says it is sold separately.
  2. Connect the hardware: Plug the box into HDMI, connect its supplied power adapter, and attach Ethernet if you want a wired network. Select the matching HDMI input on the television.
  3. Pair the remote: Follow the on-screen pairing prompt. If the television does not respond, replace or recharge the remote batteries as applicable, move close to the box and repeat pairing.
  4. Join the network: Choose your Wi-Fi network and enter its password, or allow the wired connection to obtain an address automatically. A wired connection should be connected before completing network setup.
  5. Sign in and update: Sign in with the Google account used for your apps, accept the requested permissions, then install system updates before downloading a large app library.
  6. Install only what you use: Add streaming services from the Google TV interface and remove trials or unused apps. Keeping free storage makes future updates less troublesome.
  7. Set display and audio: In the device settings, select the television’s appropriate resolution and enable compatible HDR and surround-sound options. If the picture is blank or the receiver loses audio, temporarily choose a lower resolution or stereo output and then test each feature again.
  8. Verify playback: Play a title known to be available in 4K or HDR on your service and check the television’s information panel. The title, subscription, region and display all need to support the claimed format.
  9. Configure smart-home controls: If using Matter or Thread accessories with the Streamer, add them through the Google Home setup flow and confirm that the accessory and account region are supported.

Common problems and fixes

It shows no picture

  • Select the HDMI input that matches the port used by the box.
  • Reseat both ends of the HDMI cable and power-cycle the television and box.
  • Try another HDMI port or cable. With the Streamer, use the recommended Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1-certified cable.
  • If a receiver or switch is in the chain, connect the box directly to the television to isolate compatibility problems.

Streaming quality drops or buffers

  • Run the box on Ethernet where possible, especially if the router is distant.
  • On Wi-Fi, move the router or box away from metal cabinets and other wireless equipment, and test the 5 GHz or Wi-Fi 6 network if available.
  • Check the service’s subscription and title availability. A 4K-capable box cannot force a service to deliver 4K.

There is not enough storage

  • Open the installed-app list, remove apps you no longer use and clear cached data where the app allows it.
  • Keep several gigabytes free before a major system update.
  • If storage is a deciding factor, choose a 32 GB model rather than the 8 GB Chromecast configuration.

HDR colors look wrong

  • Confirm that the television input has enhanced or high-bandwidth HDMI mode enabled if the manufacturer requires it.
  • Try enabling only the HDR format your display supports, then test a known compatible title.
  • Check the television’s picture mode; an incorrect tone-mapping mode can make HDR appear dim or oversaturated.

Audio is missing or limited to stereo

  • Check whether the television, soundbar or receiver supports the selected Dolby format.
  • Test with the box connected directly to the audio-capable display or receiver.
  • Switch temporarily to automatic or stereo output to identify whether the problem is a format mismatch rather than a network or app fault.

Prices, availability and buying precautions

Google’s listed US prices are $99.99 for the Google TV Streamer (4K), $49.99 for Chromecast with Google TV (4K), and $29.99 for Chromecast with Google TV (HD). Android Authority reported a $59.98 MSRP for the Onn 4K Pro (2026). Cinco Días reported €69.99 as the Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) launch price in Spain in May 2025. These figures come from different dates and markets, so they are not a like-for-like current price survey.

Before checkout, verify the exact model, seller, return policy, warranty, included power adapter and regional certification. Imported devices can have different plugs, languages, streaming-service support or firmware. A low price is not a bargain if updates, local apps or warranty service are unavailable.

Which Google TV box should you buy?

Buy the Google TV Streamer (4K) if you want the strongest all-round specification, first-party Google support, 32 GB of storage, 4 GB of RAM, built-in Ethernet and Matter/Thread features. Buy the Onn 4K Pro (2026) if you are in the United States, its current price is close to the reported $59.98 MSRP, and saving money matters more than 1 Gbps Ethernet or Google-branded hardware. Choose the Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) where it is officially available and its HDR/audio support and 32 GB storage fit your system. Consider Chromecast with Google TV (4K) only when its compact dongle design and a verified low price outweigh its older 2 GB/8 GB hardware.
