Apple Photos is the best-supported alternative for Apple-device households that want to search by a person’s or pet’s name. Its People & Pets collection recognizes people, dogs, and cats; after you name a group, that name can be used in Search. Face analysis runs on the device, and names stay synchronized across iCloud-enabled Apple devices when iCloud Photos is enabled.

There is no single replacement that matches every Google Photos workflow on every platform. Amazon Photos may suit Prime subscribers, Ente Photos is designed around end-to-end encryption, and self-hosted libraries offer control at the cost of hardware and maintenance. The right choice depends on four questions: which devices you use, whether the service can actually find both people and pets by name, what privacy model you accept, and who will handle backups and recovery.

Which Google Photos alternative should you choose?

Option Best fit People and pet workflow Privacy and control Main trade-off
Apple Photos with iCloud Photos Households using iPhone, iPad and Mac People & Pets recognizes people, dogs and cats; named groups can be searched, corrected and merged Apple says face analysis is on-device; iCloud synchronizes names across enabled devices Best experience is tied to Apple hardware and services; current storage plans and encryption scope must be checked for your region
Amazon Photos Prime subscribers seeking a managed cloud library Secondary comparisons describe facial-recognition and metadata search; pet coverage and exact regional behavior require confirmation Managed cloud service; the reviewed material does not establish an on-device or end-to-end-encrypted people-search workflow Prime limits, video allowance, platform support and export rules change
Ente Photos Readers prioritizing vendor-positioned end-to-end encryption Current named-person and pet capabilities, corrections and grouping behavior must be checked in the present app Ente presents the service as end-to-end encrypted Feature coverage, plan limits, platforms and export process may differ from Google Photos
Self-hosted library (for example, a NAS-based setup) Technically confident users who want maximum control Depends on the selected software; verify recognition, pet support, naming, merge and correction tools before buying hardware You control storage and access, but also security, updates and backups Requires setup, suitable hardware, independent backup and ongoing recovery planning

Only Apple’s people-and-pet workflow is directly established by the cited first-party material. Treat the other rows as decision paths rather than proof of feature parity. Face recognition, pet recognition, search by name and label portability are separate capabilities; a service that advertises “AI search” may not provide all four.

Apple Photos: the strongest documented match for Apple users

How People & Pets search works

Apple Photos organizes recognized identities in a People & Pets collection. Apple’s support documentation says Photos can recognize people, dogs and cats. Open a person’s or pet’s group, assign a name, and then use that name in Photos Search to retrieve matching images. You can correct an incorrect match, merge duplicate identity groups and remove photos that do not belong.

  • SHARE MOMENTS INSTANTLY & SECURELY: Easily send photos and videos (up to 15s) from anywhere to your Frameo digital frame via the free Frameo app (iOS/Android). • 10.1-INCH IPS HD TOUCH SCREEN: The stunning 1280x800 resolution of this 10.1 inch smart WiFi digital photo frame delivers true-to-life clarity, while the IPS panel ensures vivid, crisp images from any viewing angle. Designed with an intuitive, grandparent-friendly touch screen, swiping through memories and adjusting settings is effortless for all ages.
  • 32GB LARGE STORAGE: Ample storage meets your daily storage needs! The built-in 32GB memory holds over 80,000 photos, while the microSD card slot allows for easy transfers and backups. Bypass the 15-second app limit by uploading longer videos directly via microSD card. (Note: For optimal compatibility, please use microSD cards up to 32GB, formatted as FAT32. Larger capacities (e.g., 64GB/128GB) may not work properly.)
  • PERFECT GIFT FOR LOVED ONES: Share everyday memories instantly via WiFi and the Frameo app — from grandkids’ smiles and family vacations to pet videos and daily moments. Designed with a simple, senior-friendly setup and packed in an elegant gift-ready box, this Frameo digital photo frame is a thoughtful present for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Christmas, birthdays, anniversaries, or just because.
  • MORE THAN A PHOTO FRAME: Seamlessly sync your calendar to keep track of daily plans, important events, and personal agendas. Organize memories into custom albums, display up to 6 photos in collage mode, and send themed greetings for birthdays and holidays. With date, clock, weather, brightness, volume, and custom sleep mode settings, it’s a smarter way to enjoy photos and daily life.

The exact buttons vary by operating-system release, but the sequence is consistent: open Photos, go to the People & Pets collection, select an unnamed or existing group, add the person’s or pet’s name, and review the suggested images. When Photos presents a wrong match, use the person or pet’s options to identify the photo as someone else or remove it from the group. Review the collection after major imports; recognition improves when you confirm or reject suggestions.

Why the Apple workflow is a good fit

  • It covers pets explicitly. Dogs and cats are included in the documented People & Pets workflow, rather than being treated only as generic objects.
  • Search uses the name you assign. You do not have to remember dates, locations or album names after naming a group.
  • Corrections are built in. Duplicate groups can be merged and misidentified images can be corrected, which is essential for families with similar-looking people or multiple pets.
  • Apple-device continuity is clear. With iCloud Photos enabled, Apple says named people remain up to date across iCloud-enabled devices.

What Apple’s privacy statements do—and do not—mean

Apple says Photos uses on-device analysis to recognize faces and group people in People & Pets. That is a statement about the recognition process, not a guarantee that every part of your photo library is end-to-end encrypted by default. iCloud synchronization, device backups, shared albums and other services can have different protection models.

Apple’s Enhanced Visual Search is a separate feature for landmarks and points of interest. Apple describes an encrypted embedding and additional privacy protections for that matching process. Do not treat Enhanced Visual Search as evidence about named-person or pet search, and do not confuse landmark search with People & Pets.

Limitations to check before switching

  • Apple Photos is most convenient when your daily devices are Apple devices. Confirm how you will access the library from a Windows computer, Android phone or non-Apple browser before moving a mixed-device household.
  • iCloud storage is shared with other iCloud data. Check the current capacity and price for your country rather than relying on an old comparison.
  • Apple’s face-analysis statement does not establish that labels transfer to another service. Exported originals may contain metadata, but named identity groups are often service-specific.

Amazon Photos: a possible Prime-based route, not a guaranteed equivalent

Secondary comparisons describe Amazon Photos as a cloud alternative with facial recognition and metadata-based search, and they highlight benefits for Prime subscribers. Those descriptions are not enough to promise a Google Photos-equivalent people-and-pet workflow. Before choosing it, check Amazon’s current documentation for your country and account type.

Questions to answer before uploading your library

  1. Does the current version group faces and let you search by a person’s name?
  2. Does recognition include dogs and cats, or only people and general objects?
  3. Can you rename groups, merge duplicates, remove false matches and correct an image one at a time?
  4. What photo and video storage is included with your Prime tier in your region, and do videos consume a separate or shared allowance?
  5. Which phone, desktop and browser apps are supported, and how do you download originals with metadata?

If any answer is unclear, import a small test set first. Include several people, one or two pets, burst photos, edited images and videos. Confirm that the search results and downloads meet your needs before deleting the source library.

Ente Photos: privacy-led managed storage

Ente presents Ente Photos as an end-to-end-encrypted photo service and compares its search, sharing, setup and privacy model with several managed and self-hosted alternatives. End-to-end encryption means the service is designed so the provider cannot ordinarily read the encrypted library; it does not automatically prove that every search operation, thumbnail, diagnostic log or shared link has identical protection.

Verify the people-and-pet workflow in the current app

Encryption and face search can create a technical trade-off. A service may perform recognition on a device, use privacy-preserving processing, or offer a more limited search index. Confirm whether Ente currently supports all of the operations you rely on:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Creating a named group for a person.
  • Recognizing and naming dogs and cats as pets.
  • Searching by the assigned name on phone, desktop and web.
  • Correcting false matches and merging duplicate groups.
  • Searching shared albums and newly uploaded photos.
  • Exporting original files, metadata and albums in a usable format.

Also check current storage tiers, family sharing, supported platforms and recovery options. Vendor-authored comparisons are useful for understanding the intended privacy model, but the app’s current documentation should decide whether it is a direct match for your workflow.

Self-hosted photo libraries: maximum control, maximum responsibility

A self-hosted library stores the photo database on hardware you control, often a network-attached storage (NAS) device, while software on that device provides browsing and recognition. Comparison material places systems such as Synology Photos in this category. A NAS is an enabling purchase, not a photo-search app by itself: you still need compatible software, enough storage, user accounts, remote-access configuration and a backup plan.

What you gain

  • Control over where originals and indexes are stored.
  • Ability to choose software, retention rules and user permissions.
  • No requirement to keep the entire library with one cloud provider.
  • Potentially easier local access for a large household library.

What you must operate

  • Initial installation, account security and network configuration.
  • Operating-system and photo-application updates.
  • Monitoring disk health, storage capacity and failed jobs.
  • At least one independent backup, preferably in a different physical location.
  • A tested recovery procedure for theft, fire, ransomware, accidental deletion or a failed database.
  • Secure remote access if you need to view the library away from home.

RAID can keep a system running after some disk failures, but RAID is not a backup. It does not protect against deletion, malware, a damaged enclosure or a disaster affecting every disk in the same room. Budget for separate backup storage, such as an external hard drive for photo backup, and test restoration before trusting the system with irreplaceable photos.

Check recognition before buying hardware

Do not select a NAS model solely because a product page mentions photo management. Verify the software version, processor or memory requirements, mobile and browser clients, face grouping, pet recognition, name search, correction tools and export behavior. Requirements can change by software release, and some recognition features may depend on hardware acceleration or a separate package.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy models explained without marketing shortcuts

“Private,” “encrypted” and “on-device” describe different properties. Use the following distinctions when comparing services:

Term What it tells you What it does not establish
On-device analysis Recognition computation is performed on your phone, tablet or computer, according to the provider’s statement That synced copies, backups, shared albums or every search feature are end-to-end encrypted
End-to-end encryption Content is intended to remain encrypted so the provider cannot ordinarily read it That all metadata, thumbnails, search indexes or collaborators are protected identically
Encryption at rest Stored data is encrypted on a server or disk That the provider cannot decrypt it or that processing occurs on your device
Self-hosted You operate the storage location and access controls That the system is secure without updates, strong authentication and independent backups

Google says face grouping automatically groups similar faces to make searching and management easier. Google also says face groups and labels are visible only to the account holder, that the setting can be turned off, and that Google Photos does not sell photos, videos or personal information for advertising. These are Google’s own statements, not an independent security audit. Compare them with each alternative’s current documentation and your own risk tolerance.

How to test a replacement before migrating

A controlled trial prevents a disappointing search experience and protects your originals. Use a small, representative subset rather than your entire library.

  1. Prepare the test set. Select photos containing several people at different ages, one or more dogs or cats, group shots, low-light images, screenshots, edited copies and videos. Keep the original folder structure and filenames.
  2. Upload or import without deleting anything. Keep the source library and a separate backup. Do not assume a cloud import is a second independent backup until you can download and open the files.
  3. Build identity groups. Name each person and pet, then search by name. Test singular and shared scenes, such as a person holding a pet or two similar-looking family members.
  4. Correct errors. Remove false matches, merge duplicate groups and add an image that the service missed. Record which controls are available and whether corrections persist on another device.
  5. Check platform coverage. Repeat the searches on every phone, computer and browser your household uses. Check offline access and whether shared users can see the intended albums.
  6. Export originals. Download a sample with full resolution, capture dates, location metadata and edited versions. Open the files outside the service and compare them with the source.
  7. Test recovery. Delete a test item, restore it and confirm what happens to albums, names and shared links. For a self-hosted system, restore from the independent backup rather than merely copying files back.
  8. Decide what transfers. Assume named-person and pet labels are not portable unless both services document a supported import. Preserve a written list or export of important group assignments if you may need to recreate them.

Migration checklist for a real library

  • Inventory originals, edited copies, videos, Live Photos or motion clips, RAW files and screenshots.
  • Confirm the destination has enough capacity for the complete library plus future growth.
  • Keep an independent backup during the entire migration; do not use the destination as the only copy.
  • Verify dates, time zones, GPS data, camera metadata and file extensions after import.
  • Recreate or validate named-person and pet groups; do not assume labels will follow exports.
  • Check shared albums, collaborator permissions, public links and family accounts.
  • Document how to export originals and how to close the account or recover data later.
  • Only remove the old library after spot-checking files, searches, albums and restores on the new system.

You already pay for Prime

Evaluate Amazon Photos as a managed-storage candidate, but verify pet recognition, regional limits, video capacity and export behavior first. Prime membership alone is not evidence that the service matches your current search workflow.

Your priority is end-to-end encryption

Investigate Ente Photos and confirm its current person-and-pet features, search behavior and recovery process. Decide whether the privacy model’s trade-offs fit your need for instant, cross-platform recognition.

You are comfortable running a server

Compare self-hosted software before purchasing a NAS. Plan for updates, monitoring, independent backups and disaster recovery. Choose this route for control, not because hardware automatically supplies better recognition.

You use a mixed Apple, Android and Windows household

Make platform coverage the first filter. Test the mobile apps, web interface, sharing permissions and export process on each operating system before moving the full collection. A technically strong face model is not useful if half the household cannot reach the library.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and fixes

Assuming every “face search” includes pets

Fix: Test a named dog or cat, not just a human face. Ask whether pet groups can be named and searched, and whether the behavior is available in your country and app version.

Confusing object search with identity search

Searching for “dog” may find any dog, while a named pet search should find one specific animal. Test both and check whether the service distinguishes your pet from other animals.

Treating encryption claims as interchangeable

Fix: Identify where recognition occurs, who can decrypt stored files, what metadata is exposed, and how shared links work. Record each answer separately.

Deleting the old library after an import

Fix: Keep the source and an independent backup until original files, metadata, identity groups, albums and restores have all passed your checks.

Buying a NAS before confirming software support

Fix: Select the photo application first, then verify its current hardware and operating-system requirements. Confirm that the chosen model supports the needed version and recognition workload.

Bottom line: the practical ranking

Choose Apple Photos with iCloud Photos when you use Apple devices and want the most clearly documented person-and-pet workflow: People & Pets, names in Search, correction and merging tools, on-device face analysis and synchronization across enabled Apple devices. Choose Amazon Photos only after verifying current regional pet search, storage and export details. Choose Ente Photos when its current feature set satisfies your named-person and pet requirements and its end-to-end-encryption design is your priority. Choose a self-hosted library when you genuinely want to operate storage, updates and backups yourself. In every case, run a small migration test and retain an independent backup before removing the original library.
