Best overall managed alternative: Ente Photos. It combines automatic mobile backup, end-to-end encryption, on-device face grouping, natural-language search and family sharing without requiring you to run a server. Best self-hosted alternative: Immich, provided you can operate a Docker server and maintain independent backups of both your media and database. PhotoPrism is a strong archival choice for broad format support and local control, while Mylio Photos suits households that want local-first synchronization across computers, phones and drives.
“Automatic organization” is not one feature. It can mean background camera upload, face grouping, semantic search, duplicate detection, location classification, album mirroring or all of these together. The right replacement depends on whether you value turnkey convenience, privacy, self-hosting, professional editing or multi-device synchronization.
What to compare in a Google Photos replacement
Before moving a library, separate the jobs you expect the app to perform. A service may back up every new camera image yet offer no useful search; another may classify locations and faces locally but require you to manage storage and updates.
- Automatic backup: Does the phone upload new photos and videos in the background, and can it resume after interruptions?
- Organization: Look for face grouping, object or location classification, duplicate detection, keywords, albums and timeline views.
- Search: Semantic or natural-language search is different from filename and date filtering. Check whether filters cover people, places, cameras, dates and media types.
- Privacy: Determine whether encryption is end-to-end, where indexing occurs and whether a provider can access originals or metadata.
- Sharing: Public links, shared albums, partner accounts and permissions matter if relatives use the library.
- Platform coverage: Confirm support for Android, iOS, web, desktop operating systems and the server platform you actually use.
- Ownership and maintenance: Managed storage trades recurring fees for less administration. Self-hosting trades subscription dependence for hardware, updates and backup responsibility.
No independent benchmark in the available evidence establishes that one product has more accurate face recognition or search than another. Treat feature descriptions as capabilities, not accuracy guarantees.

Ente Photos: best managed, privacy-first replacement
Ente is the clearest choice when you want a ready-to-use service rather than a server project. Its product description presents it as “End-to-end encrypted. Cross-platform. Open-source.” Automatic backups run from mobile apps, while face detection and grouping occur on the device. Natural-language “Magic Search” lets you describe what you are looking for instead of relying only on filenames or dates.
What it automates
- Automatic backup of photos and videos from Android and iOS.
- On-device face detection and grouping, reducing the need to send face-analysis data to a provider.
- Natural-language search, curated memories and standard album organization.
- Public links and shared albums for family or friends.
- Migration from Google Photos through a Google Takeout import.
Storage tiers
| Tier | Price listed on the 2026 page | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 10 GB | Listed as free forever; verify terms before relying on it as your only archive |
| 50 GB | $2.49/month | Recurring price listed by Ente; plans can change |
| 200 GB | $4.99/month | Recurring price listed by Ente; plans can change |
| 1 TB | $9.99/month | Recurring price listed by Ente; plans can change |
| 2 TB | $19.99/month | Recurring price listed by Ente; plans can change |
The page was accessed October 16, 2026, so confirm the current price, storage allocation and family terms at signup. The trade-off is straightforward: you pay a recurring fee and depend on Ente’s roadmap, but you avoid server administration and still get strong privacy defaults.
How to move from Google Photos
- Request your library with Google Takeout and download the export.
- Install Ente on your phone or desktop, create the account and select the storage tier that covers your library.
- Import the Takeout files using Ente’s documented migration flow. Keep the original export until you verify counts, dates and representative albums.
- Enable automatic backup on each mobile device and choose which camera or media folders are included.
- Invite household members to shared albums and test a public link from a private browser window before distributing it.
Who should choose Ente
Choose Ente if you want managed infrastructure, cross-platform apps, private indexing and family sharing without learning Docker. It is less suitable if you require unlimited local control, have a very large archive that makes recurring storage expensive, or want to tune server hardware and backup policies yourself.

Its feature list includes mobile backup, facial recognition, smart search, duplicate detection, albums, partner sharing, public links, maps, memories, RAW support and Android, iOS and server clients.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

How automatic backup works
When mobile backup is enabled, Immich uploads new photos and videos from selected albums when the app opens or resumes and periodically in the background. It calculates checksums so files already present on the server are skipped, and it can mirror device albums into server albums. This combination reduces duplicate uploads while preserving the organization you created on the phone.
Search and organization
Contextual CLIP search accepts free-form queries. Filters can narrow results by people, locations, cameras, dates, filenames, media type and albums. Facial recognition, duplicate detection, maps and memories add the timeline and discovery features many people expect from a cloud photo service. These capabilities are documented features, not a guarantee of perfect recognition or search results for every library.
Deployment checklist
- Prepare a server or NAS with enough capacity for originals, thumbnails, database files and future growth.
- Install Docker, then follow Immich’s current quick-start configuration for the server and database.
- Create storage paths on a disk or volume that is included in your backup plan; do not treat a cache or temporary directory as the archive.
- Install the Android or iOS app, sign in and select the device albums to back up.
- Open the app after taking test photos, confirm that uploads complete and verify that the files are visible from the web interface.
- Configure remote access only after securing accounts, updates and network exposure. A private network or VPN is safer than exposing an unmaintained service directly to the internet.
The backup requirement many self-hosters miss
Immich’s documentation states that a complete backup must include both uploaded media and the database. Copying only the photo directory can lose albums, faces, search indexes, partner relationships and other metadata. Use at least one additional copy away from the server and periodically test restoring a sample library. Immich also warns, “Do not use it as the only way to store your photos and videos!” The project is under active development, so read upgrade notes and keep a rollback or recovery plan before major updates.

Who should choose Immich
Choose Immich if you are comfortable with Docker, storage permissions, network security and routine maintenance, and you want maximum control without a mandatory managed-storage subscription. Do not choose it solely to avoid a monthly fee if you will not fund reliable disks, off-site copies and time for troubleshooting.

PhotoPrism: privacy-focused archival organization
PhotoPrism is designed for browsing, organizing and sharing photo and video archives under your control. Its site describes automatic classification by image content and location, while its feature documentation covers indexing and conversion for common image, video and RAW formats.
Why archival users choose it
- Broad format handling is useful when a library contains camera RAW files, older videos and mixed exports.
- Automatic content and location classification reduces manual keyword work.
- Its privacy positioning emphasizes that data is not shared with Google, Amazon, Facebook or Apple unless you intentionally upload files to one of those services.
- Self-managed deployment lets you choose disks, redundancy and network boundaries.
PhotoPrism requires the same operational discipline as other self-managed software: secure the host, monitor available space, update deliberately and back up originals plus application data. Compare its administration and sharing workflow with Immich before committing; the better fit depends on whether archival format handling or a highly Google-like mobile timeline is your priority.
Mylio Photos: local-first synchronization across devices
Mylio Photos keeps a library synchronized across devices using a private, local-first approach. Its support documentation lists face tagging, folders, albums, keywords and sharing. Mylio Photos+ adds synchronization to more devices and automatic backup.
How it differs from a cloud-first service
Your working library can remain on computers, phones and drives rather than requiring every original to live in a provider’s cloud. That suits households with existing disks, laptops and travel devices. The trade-off is that synchronization quality depends on the devices and storage locations you configure, and automatic backup is tied to the Photos+ offering.

Choose IDrive for broad cloud backup
A September 5, 2025 comparison identified IDrive as a broad cloud-storage option with automatic camera backup and facial recognition. It is worth considering when protecting device contents matters more than recreating a dedicated memories timeline. Verify current encryption, retention, storage limits and pricing directly before uploading an irreplaceable library.
Choose Flickr for sharing
The same comparison highlighted Flickr for automatic uploads and a sharing-oriented experience. It fits photographers who want public or community-facing galleries. Check privacy controls and current upload limits if the library contains private family images.

A safe migration and backup plan
- Inventory first. Estimate the total size of originals, videos, RAW files and future yearly growth. Include phone folders, computers, memory cards and external drives.
- Export before switching. Keep a complete Google Takeout export or an equivalent copy untouched while testing the new system.
- Pick one canonical library. Decide whether the managed service, server, or local drive is the primary source. Avoid letting several apps independently rename and reorganize the same files until the migration is verified.
- Test a small batch. Import a few hundred files containing dates, edits, faces, RAW images, videos and shared albums. Check timestamps, orientation, duplicates and search behavior.
- Enable mobile backup deliberately. Select camera and messaging folders explicitly, then confirm uploads from Wi-Fi and cellular conditions that match your household.
- Create independent copies. For self-hosted systems, back up uploaded media and the database. For managed systems, keep an additional local export because account access or provider policy can change.
- Test restoration. Restore files and metadata to a spare location at least once. A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption.
- Retire the old service last. Keep the original account and export until counts and representative searches match your expectations.
Common failure modes and fixes
Uploads stop when the phone is idle
Background restrictions, low battery, disabled permissions or a paused account can interrupt mobile backup. Open the app, allow photo access, remove battery restrictions for the app and verify that the selected albums still exist. Check a newly taken photo from another device before assuming the queue is healthy.
Dates and locations look wrong after import
Exports may contain sidecar metadata, edited copies and duplicate filenames. Preserve the original files, compare EXIF dates with the displayed timeline and do not delete the export until a sample across old and new cameras is correct.
Search finds fewer images than expected
Indexing may still be running, or the query may depend on a face, location or object label that was not detected. Wait for indexing, try date and filename filters, and test several plain-language queries. Do not infer comparative accuracy without controlled testing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA self-hosted server fails
Check disk space, container status, database health, permissions and recent upgrade notes. Restore to a separate environment from the latest media and database backups rather than experimenting on the only copy.
Family sharing exposes too much
Review album membership and public-link settings, use separate shared albums for sensitive groups and revoke links that are no longer needed. Test links while signed out to see exactly what an outside viewer can access.
Bottom line
Ente Photos is the best default for most people who want automatic organization without operating infrastructure: it combines managed storage, end-to-end encryption, on-device face grouping, natural-language search and sharing. Immich is the closest self-hosted substitute for a Google Photos-style experience, but only when you are prepared to run Docker, maintain updates and back up both media and the database. Choose PhotoPrism for privacy-focused archival work and broad formats, or Mylio Photos for local-first synchronization across a household’s devices.
