Google News is the closest fit if you want a news-first feed. It lets you select interests and sources, then combines those choices with activity from Google services and YouTube. Microsoft’s MSN feed, including the version in Edge, is better if you want explicit topic and publisher controls, card-level feedback, and synchronization across devices. Before moving, check your current Google Discover experience: Google added publisher and creator following in 2025 and announced natural-language controls for topics and links in August 2026, although availability depends on rollout, country, language, and interface.
No service is objectively best for everyone. The right choice depends on how much control you want over sources, whether you prefer news-only coverage or a broader mix, which devices you use, and whether shared regional coverage is useful or distracting.

What a “personalized news feed” actually changes
Personalization is not the same as giving every reader a completely private stream. A service may use your chosen topics, followed publishers, reactions, account activity, or device history to order and select cards. It may also keep a layer of stories that it considers important for people who share a language or region.

That distinction matters when you compare Google News with MSN or with Discover. Google News documents both kinds of coverage: selected interests and sources influence personalized areas, while some stories remain common within a language and region. A feed can therefore feel tailored without excluding major regional or widely relevant events.
MSN puts more emphasis on direct controls. You can state which topics and publishers you want, block them, and react to cards. Discover has historically relied more on inferred interests, but Google’s 2025 and 2026 announcements add more visible controls. Decide whether you want a service to infer your interests, let you specify them, or combine both approaches.
Google News: the strongest news-first replacement
Why it is the closest match
Google News is designed around news rather than a general-interest discovery stream. Its “For you” and related sections can use the interests and sources you select, along with activity from other Google services and YouTube. That combination gives you a feed that can adapt as your reading changes while keeping the interface centered on news.

Google’s documentation also makes an important qualification: personalization does not remove all shared coverage. Readers in the same language and region can still see some of the same stories. This is useful if you want major local or international events to remain visible, but it means Google News is not a strict, hand-built source list.
How to tune Google News
- Open Google News in the web or mobile edition available to you. Labels and available sections can differ by country, language, and edition.
- Choose your interests. Select the subjects you want represented in personalized sections instead of relying only on inferred behavior.
- Follow sources you trust. Adding publishers gives Google an explicit signal about which outlets should matter more to you.
- Review the personalized area. Use “For you” or the equivalent personalized section to see whether the mix reflects your choices.
- Adjust selections when your interests change. Old interests and sources can continue influencing the feed until you remove or change them.
The exact control names and placement are edition-dependent, so a missing option does not necessarily mean the service lacks the feature globally. Google’s current help documentation is the reference for your account and region: support.google.com/googlenews/answer/9005749?hl=en.

Where Google News may disappoint
- You want every card to come from a chosen source. Shared regional and language-based coverage can still appear.
- You want immediate, card-by-card correction. The documented model emphasizes interests, sources, and activity; MSN more explicitly documents feedback on individual cards.
- You need identical behavior everywhere. Google notes that features vary by edition, so web and mobile experiences may not match.
Microsoft MSN and the Edge feed: explicit controls across devices
What makes MSN different
MSN gives you a more direct way to shape the feed. Microsoft documents controls for following or blocking publishers and topics, as well as reactions to cards. Those actions are useful when the problem is not a broad interest but a particular source, subject, or recurring type of story.
The service is available on MSN.com, inside Edge, and through Microsoft’s mobile apps. Microsoft says signing in with a Microsoft account can carry personalization across devices. That is a practical advantage if you move between a desktop browser, a phone, and Edge on another computer.

- Open MSN.com, the MSN feed in Edge, or the relevant mobile app. The layout differs by surface, but the same account-level concept applies.
- Sign in to your Microsoft account if you want your choices to follow you between supported devices.
- Select topics and publishers. Start with a small set of subjects and outlets so you can see which changes have an effect.
- Follow sources you want more often. This creates an explicit positive signal rather than leaving the service to infer your preference.
- Block unwanted publishers or topics. Use this for recurring sources or subjects that make the feed less useful.
- React to individual cards. Card feedback gives the system a more specific signal than changing a broad topic.

Content and advertising trade-offs
MSN is a broad feed rather than a pure list of articles from your subscriptions. Microsoft’s Edge guide says ads can appear as tiles. If you want a feed that keeps promotional tiles separate from editorial cards, inspect the Edge presentation before making it your default: Microsoft’s Edge news-feed guide.
The breadth can be an advantage when you want technology, business, sports, entertainment, and other subjects in one place. It can be a disadvantage if your goal is a tightly bounded news list with no non-news items or promotional tiles.

Reassess Google Discover before you switch
Publisher and creator following
Google announced in September 2025 that Discover users would be able to follow publishers and creators. That changes the comparison with older descriptions of Discover as a feed with no meaningful source controls. The announcement is available at Google’s September 2025 Discover update.

Natural-language controls for topics and links
On August 20, 2026, Google announced natural-language requests for getting more or less of particular topics and links in Search and Discover. In practical terms, the announced direction is to let you express a preference conversationally instead of navigating only through fixed categories. Google says rollout and availability can vary. Treat the feature as an option to look for, not a guaranteed control on every device. If your current Discover feed already responds well to source following and feedback, switching services may solve less than expected.
How broad is Discover’s source pool?
Google reported that more than 600,000 unique sources had been selected for Preferred Sources in the August 20, 2026 announcement. This is a company-reported count, not an independent measurement of readership, quality, or user satisfaction. It indicates scale, not that every source will appear for every reader.

Google’s General Manager of the Search Ecosystem, Mrinalini Loew, described the approach this way: “By letting you refine your tastes in real time, Discover can connect you with content that genuinely matches what you care about right now.” That is Google’s characterization of the feature, not independent evidence that its recommendations are more accurate than another service’s.
Independent RSS and news readers: use a verification checklist
A source-built RSS or news reader can be appealing if you want to decide exactly which feeds enter your reading list. However, current products, platform support, filtering behavior, synchronization, and business models were not established for this comparison, so there is no specific product recommendation here.
If you investigate this category, verify each item below on the product’s current documentation:
- Source control: Can you add the exact feeds or publishers you want, and remove them without an algorithm reintroducing them?
- Topic filtering: Does it filter by tags or keywords, and can you inspect or edit those rules?
- Read-state synchronization: Are read, saved, and hidden items synchronized across your devices?
- Import and export: Can you move subscriptions if you change products?
- Platform coverage: Does it support the web, your phone, and any desktop platform you actually use?
- Business model: Is the service free, subscription-based, ad-supported, or dependent on another account?
- Publisher compatibility: Do the feeds you rely on provide complete articles, summaries, or only headlines?
This approach offers more source-level control in principle, but it also places more setup and maintenance on you than Google News, MSN, or Discover.

Choose Google News when news relevance comes first
Pick Google News if you want a dedicated news environment, a personalized “For you” area, and the ability to select interests and sources without giving up all shared regional coverage. It is the most natural fit for readers who want one place for current events and topic-based reporting.

Choose MSN or Edge when direct feedback matters
Choose MSN or the Edge feed if you want to follow or block publishers and topics, react to individual cards, and carry those preferences between supported devices with a Microsoft account. Accept the possibility of tile ads and a broader content mix as part of that experience.
Stay with Discover when its new controls solve the original problem
Stay with Discover if your main complaint was a lack of source or topic control and your version now offers publisher or creator following, useful feedback, or natural-language adjustments. Its availability is still uneven, so evaluate the controls you can actually use rather than the announcement alone.
Investigate an RSS reader when you want a source list you own
Consider an independent reader only if you are willing to verify its current capabilities and maintain your own subscriptions. This route is about control and portability, not a guaranteed improvement in recommendation quality.
A practical selection checklist
Use these questions before changing your default feed:
- Do you want news only? Google News is explicitly news-focused. MSN and Edge can present a wider mix, while Discover depends on your Google experience and interests.
- How much source control do you need? MSN documents follow and block actions; Google News lets you select sources; Discover’s newer follow controls may depend on rollout.
- Do you prefer explicit choices or inferred recommendations? MSN emphasizes choices and feedback. Google News combines choices with Google and YouTube activity. Discover also uses account and device activity alongside settings and feedback.
- Do you read on several devices? MSN says Microsoft-account sign-in can sync personalization. Check the exact Google News or Discover edition on each device before assuming identical behavior.
- Are shared stories useful? Google News can retain coverage common to people in the same language and region. That is helpful for major events but less suitable if you want a completely individualized list.
- Are ads or non-news cards a deal-breaker? Microsoft’s Edge guide documents ads as tiles. Inspect the feed where you will actually read it.
- Can you live with changing availability? Google and Microsoft features can differ by country, language, platform, account, or rollout stage.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—establish
The documented features support a useful fit-based comparison, not a universal ranking. There is no independent comparative study, user-satisfaction statistic, or measured accuracy ranking here that proves one feed is best for all readers.
Google’s source-count figure and product announcements describe Google’s own services. Microsoft’s support and product pages describe MSN and Edge capabilities. Neither set of documentation is an independent test of recommendation quality. Use the controls that match your reading habits, then judge the resulting feed over several days rather than choosing solely from feature claims.
Bottom line
Start with Google News for the most straightforward news-first alternative, especially if you want selected interests and sources alongside shared regional coverage. Choose MSN or the Edge feed when following, blocking, and reacting to publishers and topics is more important than keeping the stream strictly news-only. Before switching, open your current Google Discover settings: publisher and creator following, plus newer topic and link controls, may already address the reason you wanted an alternative.
