For most developers, start with Default on macOS or Linux, keep Terminal Sandbox enabled, limit each project to the folders it actually needs, and add only narrow Allow rules for commands you understand. Use Request Review for production, sensitive, or unfamiliar repositories. Treat Turbo as a disposable-environment option because Google documents it as unrestricted and without isolation. On Windows, use Proceed in Sandbox for routine work and Request Review when the repository or command risk is high.

The safest speed-first configuration

Antigravity is an agent-first development environment in which agents can plan, execute, and verify work across the editor, terminal, and browser. The useful setting is not the one that removes every prompt; it is the one that removes repetitive prompts while preserving boundaries around commands, files, network access, and generated artifacts.

  • macOS or Linux: choose Default, leave Terminal Sandbox on, and keep project folders narrow.
  • Windows: use Proceed in Sandbox for ordinary tasks; switch to Request Review for high-risk work.
  • Rules: use Deny for destructive commands or sensitive paths, Ask for actions that need your decision, and Allow only for narrow, repeatable commands such as a known lint or test script.
  • Network: leave Sandbox Network Access off unless the task genuinely needs it.
  • Verification: ask the agent for a plan, the smallest relevant checks, a diff, and a test or build summary before accepting changes.

There is no authoritative Google benchmark showing a specific percentage speed increase from one preset. In practice, speed comes from fewer repetitive approvals and smaller, clearer project scopes, not from disabling every safeguard.

How Antigravity permission presets differ

On macOS and Linux, the permission engine offers three documented presets. They change command autonomy, isolation, file-system reach, and how often you must review an action.

Preset Command autonomy Isolation and file access Review frequency Best fit
Default Commands run without prompting inside the Terminal Sandbox. Sandboxed commands are restricted to the workspace and temporary directories. The agent can read and write the workspace and temporary directories; other locations require approval. Prompts appear when an operation leaves the sandbox or needs a host resource. Daily development in a repository you understand.
Request Review The sandbox is off and every terminal command requires approval. File access is limited to the workspace under the documented preset. Every terminal command is reviewed before execution. Production code, sensitive data, unfamiliar repositories, or high-impact changes.
Turbo Commands run without prompting. No isolation or restrictions; full file-system read/write access. No routine command prompts. Only disposable environments where loss or contamination is acceptable.

The preset is only one layer. Project folders, worktrees, artifact review, network access, and individual rules remain separate controls, so a fast preset does not automatically make every task safe.

When to choose Default

Default is the practical starting point because it combines autonomous execution for routine sandboxed work with approval when an action needs broader host access. A normal edit, local test, or formatter can proceed without interrupting you, while a command that reaches outside the permitted directories can pause for a decision.

What Default permits

  • Commands can run without a prompt while they remain inside the Terminal Sandbox.
  • The agent can read and write the project workspace and temporary directories.
  • Operations requiring other locations or host resources trigger approval.
  • Sandboxed commands have no network access by default.

How to make Default faster without weakening it

  1. Keep only the repository, test fixtures, and assets required for the task in the configured project folders.
  2. Identify the exact commands you run repeatedly, such as a repository’s documented lint or test script.
  3. Add an Allow rule only for that narrow command pattern, not for a general shell, interpreter, or wildcard path.
  4. Leave commands that delete files, change permissions, publish packages, or access credentials at Ask or Deny.
  5. Run the task and inspect the resulting diff and verification output before accepting the work.

This approach removes predictable friction while preserving a boundary when the agent attempts something outside the normal development loop.

When Request Review is the better setting

Request Review turns off the sandbox and requires approval for every terminal command. That is slower, but it gives you a deliberate checkpoint before each command executes. Use it when a mistake could expose secrets, alter production behavior, destroy data, or make an unfamiliar codebase difficult to trust.

Choose Request Review for these cases

  • A production repository or a checkout containing deployment credentials.
  • A codebase from an unknown source, especially when scripts run during installation or builds.
  • Database migrations, infrastructure changes, release commands, or package publishing.
  • Tasks that involve personal, customer, health, financial, or other sensitive files.
  • Any situation in which you cannot quickly explain what a proposed command will do.

How to review efficiently

Read the complete command, its working directory, arguments, environment variables, and expected outputs. Approve a command only when those details match the stated plan. Reject or revise commands that use broad recursive deletion, write outside the project, upload files, alter credentials, or invoke an unrecognized script. Request Review is most useful when the agent explains why the command is needed; ask it to state that purpose before it proposes the command if the context is unclear.

Why Turbo should be limited to disposable environments

Turbo runs commands without prompting and removes isolation and restrictions. Google documents it as having full file-system read/write access. That means an agent can reach files outside the project, modify unrelated checkouts, read local data, and execute destructive or networked operations without a review checkpoint.

Use Turbo only in an environment that can be discarded and recreated, such as a throwaway clone with no credentials, private documents, production configuration, or irreplaceable work. A container or virtual machine may reduce the impact of a mistake, but Turbo itself does not provide that isolation; the disposable boundary must come from your environment.

Windows: configure the controls separately

Windows exposes separate controls for terminal command auto-execution, non-workspace file access, and Terminal Sandbox mode rather than presenting exactly the same macOS/Linux preset behavior.

Routine Windows development

  1. Set terminal execution to Proceed in Sandbox for ordinary repository work.
  2. Keep non-workspace file access restricted so the agent cannot browse unrelated folders by default.
  3. Keep Terminal Sandbox enabled.
  4. Use Request Review when the task touches production, sensitive data, installation scripts, or unfamiliar code.

High-risk Windows tasks

Choose review before execution rather than trying to compensate with a broad Allow rule. Windows projects often include build tools, package managers, and scripts that can invoke additional processes; a command that looks harmless at the top level may perform more work through those tools.

Rules: Deny beats Ask, and Ask beats Allow

Antigravity’s documented rule precedence is Deny > Ask > Allow. The agent evaluates the most restrictive applicable rule first.

Rule Effect Good uses
Deny The action is blocked immediately. Destructive commands, credential directories, production configuration, or paths that should never be touched.
Ask The agent pauses and requests explicit approval. Database changes, network access, writes outside the workspace, package publishing, or commands requiring judgment.
Allow The action runs without prompting when it matches the rule. A known lint, formatter, unit-test command, or other narrow, repeatable script.

Writing narrow Allow rules

Match the exact executable and script you intend to use, and constrain its working directory or arguments where the settings interface permits. Allowing a specific test script is materially safer than allowing a shell, a language interpreter, or every command in a directory. Do not use Allow to bypass a prompt you have not understood; change the rule only after you know why the prompt appeared.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Blocking dangerous paths centrally

Use Deny for secrets, credential stores, production configuration, and directories containing unrelated projects. Because Deny overrides both Ask and Allow, it remains effective even if a broader rule would otherwise permit the action.

Terminal Sandbox and network access

The Terminal Sandbox is an isolated environment for agent terminal commands. Under Default, sandboxed commands are restricted to the workspace and temporary directories and have no network access by default. A command that needs a host resource or network connection prompts for approval unless an explicit rule covers it.

Keep the sandbox enabled for normal work

  • It limits the file-system locations available to routine commands.
  • It reduces accidental interaction with unrelated projects and host files.
  • It makes network use an explicit decision instead of an invisible side effect.

When to enable Sandbox Network Access

Enable Sandbox Network Access only when the task requires downloading dependencies, calling a development API, fetching documentation, or running an integration test that genuinely needs a network. Confirm the destination and the data that could leave the machine. Keep it off for refactoring, local tests, formatting, and other tasks that can complete entirely offline.

Network permission is independent of file permission. Turning it on does not grant access to unrelated files, and restricting files does not automatically block a network-capable command. Configure both deliberately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Project folders and worktrees define the real scope

The Settings page lets you define project folders and choose Local or Worktree conversations. Scope those folders to the code and assets needed for the current task instead of selecting a broad home directory or monorepo parent that contains secrets and unrelated projects.

Use narrow project folders

  1. Open Antigravity’s Settings and locate the project-folder controls.
  2. Add the repository root or the smallest set of directories required by the task.
  3. Exclude credential directories, generated archives, personal documents, and unrelated checkouts.
  4. Recheck the scope when switching repositories; a folder allowed for one task may be inappropriate for another.

Choose Local or Worktree conversations

Use a Local conversation when changes belong directly in the current checkout and you understand its branch state. Use a Worktree conversation when you want an isolated branch or parallel task directory. A worktree reduces collisions between independent tasks, but it does not replace permission rules or review of the resulting diff.

Artifact Review protects writes, not just commands

Artifact Review controls whether Antigravity prompts before generated artifacts, such as code files, are written to disk. Keep it enabled for unfamiliar codebases, generated migrations, configuration files, and any task where an incorrect write would be costly.

Reviewing an artifact means checking the complete file change, not merely its filename. Look for credentials accidentally embedded in configuration, broad permission changes, generated files added to version control, and edits outside the requested scope. Artifact Review complements terminal approval: a command can be permitted while the file it produces still deserves inspection.

A verification workflow that preserves speed

Antigravity is designed to plan, execute, and verify complex tasks. Give it a compact verification contract so faster execution does not mean less oversight.

  1. State the plan. Ask for the files it expects to change, the commands it will run, and any network or external access it needs.
  2. Start with the smallest check. Run a focused test or lint command before a full build when that can detect the likely failure more quickly.
  3. Review the diff. Confirm that edits are limited to the requested files and that generated artifacts are intentional.
  4. Run relevant verification. Ask for the project’s documented tests, type checks, linter, or build step that covers the change.
  5. Read the output. Require a summary of passed, failed, skipped, and unrun checks; do not treat a command that exited early as a successful test run.
  6. Inspect the final state. Check status, outstanding prompts, and any files created outside the expected project scope before merging or deploying.

This workflow keeps routine commands autonomous while reserving human attention for scope, side effects, and evidence of correctness.

Recommended settings by repository risk

Repository or task Preset or execution mode Sandbox Rules and review Network
Personal prototype with no secrets Default; Turbo only if the environment is disposable. Enabled Allow narrow test and lint commands; Ask for writes outside the project. Off unless required.
Normal team application Default Enabled Deny sensitive paths; Ask for installation, publishing, and external writes. Off by default.
Unfamiliar open-source checkout Request Review Review every command; keep project scope narrow. Artifact Review enabled; no broad Allow rules. Off until a specific dependency or test requires it.
Production or regulated repository Request Review Keep isolation and workspace boundaries. Deny credentials and destructive paths; inspect every command and artifact. Off unless explicitly approved for the task.
Throwaway benchmark or disposable clone Turbo can be considered only inside that disposable boundary. Isolation is supplied by the disposable environment, not Turbo. Never place secrets or irreplaceable work there. Enable only for the benchmark or task.

Step-by-step setup for a new project

macOS and Linux

  1. Open Antigravity’s Settings and select the Default permission preset.
  2. Confirm that Terminal Sandbox is enabled.
  3. Add only the repository and required asset directories to the project folders list.
  4. Choose a Local conversation for direct work or a Worktree conversation for an isolated branch.
  5. Enable Artifact Review, particularly for an unfamiliar repository or generated configuration.
  6. Leave Sandbox Network Access off initially.
  7. Add Deny rules for destructive commands and sensitive paths.
  8. Add Ask rules for network access, database changes, package publishing, and writes outside the workspace.
  9. Add Allow rules only for exact, repeatable lint or test commands.
  10. Ask the agent for a plan, run focused checks, inspect the diff, and then run the broader verification required by the project.

Windows

  1. Open Settings and set terminal command execution to Proceed in Sandbox for routine work.
  2. Keep non-workspace file access restricted.
  3. Keep Terminal Sandbox enabled.
  4. Set Artifact Review on when generated files could affect the application or build.
  5. Leave Sandbox Network Access off until a specific task needs it.
  6. For production, sensitive, or unfamiliar work, switch to Request Review and approve commands individually.

Troubleshooting common prompts and failures

“Why did a command ask for approval under Default?”

The command likely requested a host resource, a location outside the sandbox, or network access. Read the requested path and capability. Approve it only if the operation is necessary and within the task scope; otherwise, revise the command to work inside the project or keep the request blocked.

“Why does a test fail because it cannot download a dependency?”

Sandboxed commands have no network access by default. Confirm that downloading is necessary, then enable Sandbox Network Access or approve the specific network request according to your project’s policy. Do not enable unrestricted network access merely to avoid investigating which dependency is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Why can’t the agent open a file outside the project?”

That restriction is intentional. Add the smallest required directory to the project scope or approve a one-time access request after checking that the path contains no sensitive or unrelated material. Avoid adding an entire home directory for convenience.

“How do I stop Antigravity touching another checkout?”

Remove the broader folder from the project scope, add a Deny rule for the unrelated path, and use a worktree for the active task. A Deny rule takes precedence over Ask and Allow, so it can protect the path even when other rules are broad.

“The agent changed files I did not expect. What now?”

Stop accepting further artifacts, inspect the version-control status and diff, and identify which command or artifact created each unexpected file. Revert only changes you understand, then narrow the project folders and rules before restarting. Keep Artifact Review enabled while you diagnose the scope problem.

“Should I switch to Turbo because prompts are annoying?”

First replace broad prompts with narrow Allow rules for commands you understand, and keep Deny rules for destructive paths. If the task still needs unrestricted access, move it to a disposable environment rather than exposing a working machine or production checkout to Turbo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision checklist

  • Is the repository disposable, or does it contain work or data you must protect?
  • Can the task complete inside the project folders and temporary directories?
  • Does any command need network, credentials, deployment access, or a database?
  • Which actions should be permanently blocked with Deny?
  • Which exact commands are safe enough for Allow?
  • Is Artifact Review enabled for generated files?
  • Will a Local conversation cause branch collisions, or is a Worktree safer?
  • Will you receive a plan, focused checks, a diff, and a verification summary before accepting changes?

For the broadest set of developers, the resulting configuration is Default or Proceed in Sandbox, narrow project scope, Terminal Sandbox enabled, network off by default, and carefully layered Deny, Ask, and Allow rules. Move to Request Review whenever the cost of an incorrect command exceeds the time saved by automation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Google publish a speed percentage for Antigravity presets?

No authoritative Google source establishes a specific productivity or safety percentage for one preset. The practical speed gain comes from reducing repetitive prompts with narrow Allow rules while retaining sandbox and review boundaries.

Can I use a worktree instead of changing permission settings?

A worktree isolates a branch or task directory, but it does not replace Terminal Sandbox, project-folder scope, rule precedence, Artifact Review, or network controls. Configure those separately.

Is network access controlled by the permission preset?

No. Sandbox Network Access is a separate control. Keep it off unless a task needs a network connection, and review what data and destinations the command involves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the quickest safe way to reduce prompts?

Keep Default or Proceed in Sandbox, then add narrowly scoped Allow rules for known lint or test commands. Do not allow broad shells, interpreters, wildcard paths, or destructive operations.
