The best GitHub alternative in 2026 depends on your reason for leaving: GitLab is the strongest broad replacement, Bitbucket fits Jira-centered teams, Azure DevOps suits Microsoft organizations, and Gitea, Forgejo, or Codeberg fit users who value control, open-source governance, or self-hosting. No alternative fully reproduces GitHub’s public network and ecosystem.
Git repository hosting is relatively easy to replace. GitHub’s wider role as a public developer identity, discovery engine, integration target, package host, automation platform, and contributor community is much harder to reproduce.
Key takeaways
- GitLab is the strongest general-purpose GitHub replacement for teams wanting source control, CI/CD, security, packages, and planning in one platform.
- Bitbucket is the best fit when Jira and the broader Atlassian ecosystem already manage work, documentation, and administration.
- Azure DevOps is the natural choice for organizations built around Azure, .NET, Visual Studio, Microsoft identity, and enterprise agreements.
- Gitea and Forgejo reduce software licensing costs through self-hosting, but the operator still pays for infrastructure, backups, patching, monitoring, and staff time.
- Codeberg is a hosted, community-oriented option for public open-source projects that do not require GitHub-scale discoverability or marketplace reach.

| Platform | Best for | Hosting model | CI/CD position | Open-source status | Pricing signal | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GitLab | Broad all-in-one replacement | Hosted, Dedicated, or Self-Managed | Native GitLab CI/CD; usage and features vary by tier | Self-Managed options exist; hosted product and tiers differ | Free; Premium listed at $29/user/month billed annually; Ultimate custom | Complexity and potentially high per-user and usage costs |
| Bitbucket Cloud | Jira and Atlassian teams | Hosted Cloud; enterprise deployment is a separate consideration | Bitbucket Pipelines | Hosted proprietary service | Official comparison page lists Premium at $6.60/user/month; verify the current quote | Less compelling outside Atlassian |
| Azure DevOps | Microsoft, Azure, and .NET organizations | Hosted Services; other deployment and licensing choices differ | Azure Pipelines with separate parallel-job and usage considerations | Hosted proprietary Microsoft service | First five Basic users free; then $6/user/month | Segmented product model and more complicated pricing |
| Codeberg | Community-oriented public open source | Hosted service | Usually paired with adjacent tooling rather than a GitHub-scale native ecosystem | Hosted service based on Forgejo | Verify current quotas, policies, and availability directly | Smaller ecosystem and less discoverability |
| Gitea | Lightweight self-hosting | Self-hosted software; hosted offerings are a separate purchase | Focused forge, with integrations or companion services as needed | Open-source server software | No reliable current hosted price supplied; infrastructure is still required | Operational responsibility remains yours |
| Forgejo | Community-led self-hosting | Self-hosted software | Usually composed with external or companion CI/CD | Open-source, community-oriented forge | No vendor-hosted price supplied; hosting and support are separate | Smaller ecosystem and more administration |
| SourceHut | Email- and command-line-centric development | Hosted specialist service | Workflow is deliberately less all-in-one | Specialist open-development orientation | Verify current service pricing | Steep learning curve for GitHub-style teams |
| Radicle | Decentralized collaboration | Peer-to-peer rather than conventional centralized hosting | Not a conventional hosted CI/CD suite | Git-native decentralized model | Not a conventional per-seat comparison | Different discovery, identity, availability, and moderation model |
How should you choose a GitHub alternative?
Choose a GitHub alternative by identifying the capability you actually need to replace. A code-hosting replacement needs repositories, branches, reviews, permissions, and web access. A forge adds issues, discussions, wikis, releases, project management, and community features. A DevOps-platform replacement also needs CI/CD, package registries, security scanning, deployment controls, and governance.
Replacing GitHub’s Git hosting is easier than replacing the GitHub ecosystem. Actions and marketplace integrations, Dependabot-like automation, Codespaces-like environments, Copilot-like AI, GitHub Apps, public project discovery, and the familiarity of github.com links may all require separate migration work or may not have direct equivalents.
Use this decision guide
- Choose GitLab if one integrated platform for repositories, merge requests, CI/CD, security, packages, and planning matters most.
- Choose Bitbucket if Jira is already the team’s system of record and Atlassian administration is familiar.
- Choose Azure DevOps if Azure, Microsoft identity, Visual Studio, .NET, Boards, and Pipelines are central to delivery.
- Choose Codeberg if a hosted, nonprofit or community-oriented forge is attractive for a public open-source project.
- Choose Gitea if you want a relatively lightweight self-hosted forge and have someone responsible for operations.
- Choose Forgejo if open-source governance and an independently governed self-hosted forge are priorities.
- Choose SourceHut if mailing lists, email review, and command-line workflows are preferable to visual dashboards.
- Choose Radicle if decentralization is the primary objective and a conventional hosted social network is not required.
Hosted or self-hosted: which GitHub alternative is right?
Hosted SaaS is usually the better choice when fast setup, vendor-managed availability, onboarding, support, and integrations matter more than infrastructure control. Self-hosting is better when data control, private-network operation, custom authentication, disconnected environments, or deployment sovereignty justify the administrative work.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Consideration | Hosted SaaS | Self-hosted |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Open an account and configure projects | Provision servers, databases, storage, TLS, identity, and email |
| Maintenance | Vendor handles platform patching and upgrades | Your team handles upgrades, vulnerabilities, monitoring, and recovery |
| Cost pattern | Recurring user, compute, storage, and add-on charges | Infrastructure, backup, support, and staff costs replace or supplement licenses |
| Control | Vendor controls roadmap, policies, and service architecture | Organization controls data, authentication, upgrades, and network placement |
| Best fit | Small teams, rapid projects, and organizations without platform staff | Internal, regulated, private, disconnected, or highly customized environments |
Self-hosting is not automatically cheaper. A self-hosted Gitea or Forgejo instance may avoid per-seat SaaS charges, but the organization still needs a virtual machine or physical server, backups, object or package storage, database administration, TLS certificates, monitoring, email delivery, security patching, upgrade testing, incident response, and disaster recovery.
Gitea’s comparison documentation describes low resource use and multiple database and operating-system options, while warning that cross-product comparisons can become outdated. Treat that material as orientation rather than a permanent benchmark.
Which GitHub alternative is best for most teams?
GitLab is the best broad GitHub alternative for teams that want an integrated DevOps platform. GitLab combines repository hosting, merge requests, issue tracking, planning, CI/CD, package and container capabilities, and security features more comprehensively than a lightweight Git forge. GitLab offers GitLab.com, GitLab Dedicated, and GitLab Self-Managed deployment models, so organizations can choose between vendor-hosted and more controlled environments.
GitLab documents imports from existing providers including GitHub and Bitbucket in its plans and subscription documentation. Import support can reduce the initial repository-move effort, but importing repositories is not the same as reproducing every issue, pull request, discussion, secret, webhook, package, workflow, and permission.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

GitLab’s official pricing page lists a Free plan, Premium at $29 per user per month billed annually, and Ultimate at custom pricing. The hosted Free plan in the supplied research includes five licensed users, 400 compute minutes per month, and 10 GiB of storage.
Those limits make the Free plan useful for evaluation and smaller projects, but the headline tier price is not the complete cost. Compare compute minutes, storage, runners, registries, security features, GitLab Credits, and other add-ons against actual usage.
When is GitLab a poor choice?
GitLab may be excessive for an individual who only needs private Git repositories, and Premium can be expensive for a small team once the free limits no longer fit. Self-managed GitLab also transfers significant responsibility for installation, upgrades, backups, security, capacity, and availability to the organization.

When is Bitbucket better than GitHub?
Bitbucket is the best GitHub alternative for teams already centered on Jira and other Atlassian products. Bitbucket’s main advantage is not generic feature parity; it is the way repositories, pull requests, work items, and delivery workflows fit into Atlassian administration and Jira operations.

According to Bitbucket’s Premium information, Standard includes core capabilities such as LFS and Pipelines, while Premium adds more granular administration, security, and auditing controls.
Bitbucket is less compelling when a team does not already use Atlassian products. The complete cost may include Jira, Confluence, Trello, Atlassian Guard, administration, and CI/CD usage rather than Bitbucket’s repository seat price alone.
Bitbucket’s official comparison page currently displays Premium at $6.60 per user per month, but the same page compares against GitLab pricing published on January 15, 2025. Treat the displayed figure as a page-specific pricing signal, not a guaranteed quote or a definitive current GitLab-versus-Bitbucket comparison; verify the current plan and billing terms before purchase.
Is Azure DevOps a good GitHub alternative?
Azure DevOps is a strong GitHub alternative for Microsoft, Azure, .NET, Visual Studio, and enterprise-identity teams. Azure DevOps is organized as integrated services: Azure Repos for Git repositories, Azure Boards for planning, Azure Pipelines for CI/CD, and Azure Artifacts for packages.
Azure DevOps pricing lists the first five Basic users as free and additional Basic users at $6 per user per month. Basic includes Azure Boards, Azure Repos, Azure Pipelines access, and Azure Artifacts allowances. The page also lists one free Microsoft-hosted parallel job with 1,800 minutes per month and one free self-hosted parallel job with unlimited minutes.
Azure DevOps pricing becomes more complicated when an organization adds Test Plans, security services, parallel jobs, storage, or other services. The supplied pricing page lists Basic + Test Plans at $52 per user per month, Code Security at $30 per committer per month, and Secret Protection at $19 per committer per month. These are US-dollar list-price signals and may vary by agreement, currency, region, or purchase channel.
Azure DevOps can feel more segmented than GitHub, and Microsoft-specific terminology creates a learning curve. Azure DevOps may be excessive for a hobbyist or small open-source project that only needs a simple public forge, but Microsoft licensing or an existing Azure agreement can change the effective cost for a business.
Which open-source GitHub alternative should you use?
Gitea, Forgejo, and Codeberg are related in the broader forge landscape but are not interchangeable. Gitea and Forgejo are forge software projects that can be self-hosted. Codeberg is a hosted service built around Forgejo. The choice is therefore partly about software and governance, and partly about whether you want another party to operate the service.

| Option | What you receive | Best fit | What you operate or give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Codeberg | Hosted Forgejo-based service | Public open-source projects and users who prefer community-oriented hosting | Less ecosystem reach; verify current quotas, policies, CI availability, and eligibility |
| Gitea | Open-source forge software, with hosted offerings separate from self-hosting | Homelabs, internal teams, individuals, and small companies | Server, database, backups, authentication, email, upgrades, and recovery |
| Forgejo | Community-oriented open-source forge software | Organizations prioritizing self-hosting and independent governance | Hosting and adjacent CI/CD must be assembled and maintained |
Is Codeberg the same as Forgejo?
No. Codeberg is a hosted service, while Forgejo is the forge software that Codeberg uses as its foundation. Using Codeberg avoids much of the server administration involved in running Forgejo yourself, but the hosted service has its own policies, quotas, eligibility rules, and availability considerations.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Codeberg is especially attractive for public open-source projects and users who value nonprofit or community-oriented hosting. Codeberg should not be presented as a drop-in replacement for GitHub’s network, marketplace, or public discovery engine. Confirm current storage limits, account policies, CI availability, and project eligibility directly before committing a project.
Is Gitea the best lightweight self-hosted alternative?
Gitea is the best lightweight self-hosted choice for many small teams and internal projects. Gitea provides a focused forge with repositories, issues, pull requests, releases, wikis, and related collaboration features without requiring every team to adopt a large DevOps suite.
Gitea is appropriate when a person or team can own operations. It is not appropriate to treat the software as a managed service unless hosting, backups, monitoring, patching, authentication, and support have been assigned to someone.
Why choose Forgejo instead of Gitea?
Choose Forgejo when community-oriented governance and an independently governed open-source forge are more important than a particular hosted product. Forgejo is suitable for private infrastructure and internal development, but operators should verify current supported features, release status, authentication options, and CI/CD integrations from the project documentation.
Forgejo has a smaller ecosystem than GitHub and generally requires composing the forge with external CI/CD and other services. Self-hosted Forgejo is also a different operational experience from using Codeberg, even though Codeberg is based on Forgejo.
What are the specialist alternatives?
SourceHut
SourceHut is best for experienced developers who prefer mailing lists, email-based review, command-line tools, and minimalism. SourceHut is not designed to maximize visual similarity with GitHub. Teams that expect web discussions, polished project boards, a large marketplace, and mainstream contributor familiarity may find SourceHut’s workflow difficult to introduce.
Radicle
Radicle is best for technically sophisticated users whose primary goal is decentralized collaboration. Radicle uses a Git-native, peer-to-peer model instead of functioning as a conventional centralized forge. Discovery, identity, moderation, availability, and collaboration work differently, and repository availability depends on peers or nodes being available. Radicle is an experimental or specialized choice, not a one-for-one GitHub replacement for most teams.
GitLab vs Bitbucket vs Azure DevOps: which commercial platform fits?
GitLab, Bitbucket, and Azure DevOps are the most plausible broad commercial replacements, but each wins for a different organizational context.
| Decision factor | GitLab | Bitbucket | Azure DevOps |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best ecosystem fit | Teams wanting an integrated DevOps suite | Jira and Atlassian organizations | Azure, Microsoft identity, Visual Studio, and .NET organizations |
| Repository review | Merge requests and repository governance | Pull requests, permissions, and code review | Azure Repos with Microsoft ecosystem integration |
| CI/CD | Native GitLab CI/CD; compute and features vary by plan | Bitbucket Pipelines; usage and limits require plan review | Azure Pipelines; hosted and self-hosted parallel jobs are separately relevant |
| Planning | Integrated issues and planning | Strongest when paired with Jira | Azure Boards |
| Hosting choices | GitLab.com, Dedicated, or Self-Managed | Primarily Cloud for this comparison; enterprise deployment is separate | Azure DevOps Services; other Microsoft deployment options differ |
| Entry pricing signal | Free; Premium $29/user/month billed annually | Premium page signal $6.60/user/month; verify | First five Basic users free; then $6/user/month |
| Principal trade-off | Broad capability brings complexity and tiered costs | Value drops outside Atlassian | More segmented interface and pricing |
For a general team without a strong existing ecosystem, start with GitLab. For a Jira-centered organization, evaluate Bitbucket and the total Atlassian stack. For a Microsoft-centered organization, evaluate Azure DevOps alongside existing Microsoft agreements, identity, pipeline, security, and storage requirements.
What should you compare before choosing?
Do not compare only repository pages and headline seat prices. A serious evaluation should cover the complete software lifecycle.

Enterprise buyers should separately verify SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, audit-log retention, legal hold, data residency, backup guarantees, support response times, vulnerability management, IP restrictions, private networking, regulatory attestations, and contractual terms. The presence of a feature on a product page does not prove that the feature is included in the plan you will buy.

How much does a GitHub alternative really cost?
The real cost includes more than repository seats. Calculate user licenses, CI/CD minutes, runner concurrency, storage, large files, package and container storage, security add-ons, support, managed hosting, servers, databases, backup storage, administration time, migration labor, and downtime risk.
GitLab separates plan tiers from compute minutes, storage, GitLab Credits, and other add-ons, as shown on its official pricing page. Azure DevOps separately prices users, hosted build minutes, self-hosted parallel jobs, storage, and security services on its services pricing page. Bitbucket’s lower displayed seat price can also be misleading if a team must add Jira, Confluence, Atlassian administration, or higher CI/CD capacity.
For self-hosted Gitea or Forgejo, replace subscription estimates with a total-cost calculation covering server or cloud compute, database and object storage, off-site backups, monitoring, email, TLS, patching, on-call response, upgrade testing, and staff time. “Free software” means no software-seat charge; it does not mean zero operating cost.
How do you migrate from GitHub?
Git migration is easy; platform migration is not. A repository mirror transfers Git references, but issues, pull requests, discussions, releases, settings, secrets, webhooks, Actions history, and package artifacts require separate migration work.
1. Inventory the GitHub estate
List repositories, organizations, teams, permissions, deploy keys, deploy tokens, webhooks, Actions workflows, packages, releases, wikis, issues, discussions, secrets, environments, forks, mirrors, archived projects, and repository URLs embedded in documentation or package metadata. Mark each repository public, private, archived, forked, mirrored, or business-critical.
2. Back up Git and non-Git data separately
Export repositories and separately preserve issues, labels, pull requests, review comments, milestones, wikis, releases and assets, discussions, projects, workflow files, secrets inventories, webhooks, deploy keys, packages, container images, and security history. Do not assume that an importer handles every category.
3. Test a non-critical repository
Create a destination project, import a representative repository, convert its CI/CD workflow, recreate permissions, test pull or merge requests, verify packages and releases, and run a deployment before moving a production repository.
4. Mirror Git repositories
git clone --mirror https://github.com/ORG/REPO.git
cd REPO.git
git push --mirror https://DESTINATION.example/ORG/REPO.git
The mirror command transfers Git refs, branches, and tags. The mirror command does not automatically transfer issues, pull requests, discussions, releases, repository settings, secrets, webhooks, Actions history, or package artifacts.
5. Use a working-copy migration when appropriate
git clone https://github.com/ORG/REPO.git
cd REPO
git remote rename origin github
git remote add origin https://DESTINATION.example/ORG/REPO.git
git push -u origin --all
git push origin --tags
A working-copy migration is useful when you want to inspect or selectively push branches rather than mirror every ref. Recreate branch protection and review rules after the initial import, because destination policies may reject a mirror push.

- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
6. Handle failures and Git LFS
- If a mirror push is rejected, confirm that the destination is empty or that overwriting refs is intended.
- Check branch protection, required reviews, credentials, tokens, SSH keys, and repository permissions.
- Push branches and tags separately if the destination does not permit mirror operations.
- Recreate protected branches after the initial import, not before it, when destination rules block the import.
- Verify Git LFS support and transfer LFS objects using the destination provider’s documented migration method; a standard Git mirror does not guarantee that all LFS objects moved.
7. Convert automation and reconnect services
Review GitHub Actions syntax and marketplace actions, Dependabot configuration, CODEOWNERS behavior, branch rules, GitHub Apps, Checks API integrations, Discussions, Projects, Codespaces, Packages, security-alert workflows, release automation, and every use of github.com in documentation or package metadata. Recreate secrets, environment variables, webhooks, deploy keys, service accounts, SSO, team permissions, and notifications on the destination.
8. Decide whether to keep a GitHub mirror
Moving a public project can reduce search visibility, inbound links, contributor familiarity, casual contributions, third-party automation compatibility, and presence in developer tutorials. Keeping GitHub as a read-only mirror while making the alternative canonical can preserve discoverability, provided the project clearly identifies the canonical issue tracker and contribution location.
When is GitHub still the better choice?
Stay with GitHub when public reach and discoverability are critical, the team depends heavily on GitHub Actions or GitHub Apps, the project needs Codespaces or GitHub-specific tooling, or replacing existing integrations would cost more than the perceived benefit.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best GitHub alternative overall?
GitLab is the strongest general-purpose GitHub alternative for teams that want integrated repositories, merge requests, CI/CD, security, packages, and planning. GitLab is an editorial best-fit recommendation, not an objective universal winner; Bitbucket and Azure DevOps may be better when Atlassian or Microsoft tooling is central.
What is the cheapest GitHub alternative?
Gitea or Forgejo self-hosted can have no per-seat software subscription, but self-hosting still costs money through servers, storage, backups, monitoring, patching, and administration. Among listed hosted pricing signals, Azure DevOps provides the first five Basic users free and lists additional Basic users at $6 per user per month, while actual total cost depends on CI/CD, storage, security, and agreement terms.
Can I migrate a GitHub repository with Git mirror?
Yes, a Git mirror can transfer repository refs, branches, and tags, but a mirror does not automatically transfer issues, pull requests, discussions, releases, settings, secrets, webhooks, Actions history, or package artifacts. Git LFS objects also require separate verification and usually the destination provider’s documented migration method.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Is Codeberg the same as Forgejo?
No. Codeberg is a hosted service based on Forgejo, while Forgejo is self-hostable forge software. Codeberg reduces infrastructure administration, whereas self-hosted Forgejo gives the operator control over hosting, upgrades, authentication, backups, and recovery.
Should a public open-source project leave GitHub completely?
Not necessarily. A public project that depends on GitHub’s discoverability, contributor network, links, or integrations may keep GitHub as a read-only mirror while making another platform canonical. The project should clearly publish where issues, contributions, releases, and discussions now belong.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose GitLab as the default broad replacement, Bitbucket for Jira-centered teams, and Azure DevOps for Microsoft-centered organizations. Choose Codeberg for hosted community-oriented open source, Gitea for lightweight self-hosting, Forgejo for community-led self-hosting, SourceHut for email-centric development, and Radicle for decentralized collaboration. Compare migration effort and total operating cost—not just repository features or the lowest seat price.
