The short answer: give each character one gift per in-game week, and choose an item that character is known to like before settling for a broad category match. Nintendo presents gifts as one of two ways to win over potential allies, the other being an invitation to share a meal. Gifts are the easier route to plan around, but no public source offers a verified, complete list of best gifts for every character, so the way to pick well is to read each character’s preferences and the item descriptions in the game.
Gifts and meals are two recruitment routes
Nintendo’s official UK game page for Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave describes recruitment this way: “Some may accept your offer immediately, while others will need more convincing – try giving them gifts or inviting them to share a meal to win them over.” Gifts and meals are therefore two separate tools for the same job, and you can use either one, or both, with a given character.

Nintendo Insider, an independent guide, adds that giving a first gift opens the option of sharing a meal at an inn. Treat that as a sequencing detail reported by a third-party site rather than an official rule. In practice, it means a first gift can be the step that makes a meal available, so it is worth thinking of the two together rather than as unrelated options.

An independent gift guide describes a simple selection method: start with what the character is known to like, then fall back on a suitable category. Work through the following checks in order.

1. Look for a known favorite
A specific item that a character likes is a stronger choice than a general category. If a character’s stated preferences name an item, that item should be your first pick for that week.
2. Read the item description against the character’s interests
Check Character Info for the character and the description of the candidate item. If the description fits what the character is shown to care about, the gift is a reasonable choice. If it does not, look for another option within the same category or pick a different item.

3. Weigh the cost of a missed week
Because each character can receive only one gift per in-game week, a poor choice uses up that week’s opportunity. When two candidates are close, the cost of being wrong is the main reason to prefer the item with the stronger match, not the one that merely sounds plausible.
4. Consider a meal when the gift is uncertain
If no gift clearly fits a character, an invitation to share a meal is the alternative Nintendo names. Use it as a way to make progress when your gift options are weak, and keep in mind that a meal does not replace the weekly gift if you still want to give one.

Examples from an independent guide
The following examples come from one independent gift guide. They illustrate how the method works and should be checked against the character and item in your own game.

The guide’s point is that a category match is a starting place, not a guarantee. Even within a category that seems to fit, one item can land better than another.

Where the evidence stops
Public sources do not establish a complete, independently tested best-gift ranking for every character. The examples above are what one guide reports, not a full table. No public source gives a numeric support value for individual gifts, a gift price, or a recruitment success rate, so this article does not offer any of those figures.

Game details
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is a Nintendo Switch 2 game. Nintendo’s US store listing identifies a physical edition, names Nintendo as publisher and Intelligent Systems as developer, and gives September 17, 2026 as the release date. Nintendo’s UK game page also lists the game as a Switch 2 title. Check your regional eShop or retailer for current availability and region compatibility.
