There is no evidence here to name a defensible overall winner across Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo: current official Nintendo model and price details are not established. For the systems that can be compared, choose between Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 by weighing price, disc-drive needs, storage and the games you want to play. Treat the manufacturer prices below as dated reference points, not guaranteed current retailer prices.
At a glance: the models and dated US prices
| Console | US price and date | What the official information establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X, 1 TB with disc drive | $799.99 displayed on Microsoft’s Xbox product page, accessed October 5, 2026; verify live price and availability. Microsoft | Native 4K positioning; disc-drive model. |
| Xbox Series X, 1 TB all-digital | $749.99 displayed on Microsoft’s Xbox product page, accessed October 5, 2026; verify live price and availability. Microsoft | All-digital model. |
| Xbox Series X, 2 TB Galaxy Black | $799.99 displayed on Microsoft’s Xbox product page, accessed October 5, 2026; verify live price and availability. Microsoft | 2 TB model; Microsoft announced it would sunset this model. Microsoft’s June 25, 2026 announcement |
| Xbox Series S | Exact current price not stated in the cited product-page details. Microsoft announced a $100 increase for 512 GB Xbox models effective August 1, 2026; that is a change amount, not a current price. Microsoft | Disc-free; 1440p target with 4K upscaling. |
| PlayStation 5 | $649.99 recommended US price, effective April 2, 2026. Sony Interactive Entertainment | Standard PS5 option. |
| PlayStation 5 Digital Edition | $599.99 recommended US price, effective April 2, 2026. Sony Interactive Entertainment | Digital Edition option. |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | $899.99 recommended US price, effective April 2, 2026. Sony Interactive Entertainment | 2 TB built-in storage; game-dependent enhancements. |
| Nintendo system | Not stated in the official sources cited here. | Model, price, features, portability and library are not established here, so a three-brand ranking would be incomplete. |
The prices are not perfectly like-for-like: Sony’s figures are dated recommended prices, while Microsoft’s are displayed product-page prices that should be checked again before buying. Microsoft also announced a $150 increase for 1 TB Xbox models effective August 1, 2026. Its announcement describes a worldwide pricing change, not a complete current price list for every model.

Which Xbox Series X or Series S fits?
Choose Series X if you want the stronger resolution target or a disc drive
Microsoft describes Series X as a native 4K console and offers both disc-drive and all-digital configurations. A disc drive matters if you want to use compatible physical games or discs; the all-digital version does not provide that option. Check the exact model listing and current price, especially because Microsoft said it would sunset the 2 TB Series X model. Xbox Series X product information and the pricing announcement
Choose Series S if a disc-free 1440p console suits your setup
Microsoft positions Series S as disc-free, with a 1440p target and 4K upscaling. Those descriptions do not mean every game runs at the same resolution or frame rate: supported content and the display you connect affect the result. Xbox advertises up to 120 frames per second for supported content and displays, not as a guarantee for every title. Microsoft’s Xbox product page

Account for storage and accessories
Xbox lists storage expansion and discusses Xbox One accessory compatibility on its product page. Confirm compatibility for the specific accessory or expansion device you own before relying on it; the existence of compatibility support does not establish that every older accessory or storage device works. Which PlayStation 5 should you buy?
PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition
Sony’s March 27, 2026 announcement sets recommended US prices of $649.99 for PS5 and $599.99 for PS5 Digital Edition, effective April 2, 2026. The $50 difference is between those manufacturer-listed prices; choose based on whether you need the standard model’s disc option, and check the current package and retailer listing because the announcement is not a live checkout quote. PS5 Pro
At a recommended US price of $899.99 effective April 2, 2026, PS5 Pro is the higher-priced choice. Sony describes PSSR image upscaling, advanced ray tracing and goals of higher or more consistent frame rates, but says Pro features vary by game. The console has 2 TB built-in storage, and Sony reports that more than 100 PS5 titles are enhanced for Pro; that is a manufacturer-reported count, not a promise that every game receives the same improvement. What can’t be concluded about Nintendo—or a three-way winner
A home-versus-portable decision is central to comparing these three brands, but the official Nintendo model, price, features and game-library information needed to assess that choice are not established here. That means the Xbox and PlayStation trade-offs above can guide a purchase within those families, but they cannot support a fair claim that either brand is the best gaming console overall in 2026. Check Nintendo’s current official product and pricing information for your region before making a cross-brand decision.

How to make the decision
- Start with the games. Make a shortlist of the specific titles you expect to play and confirm their availability on the console models under consideration.
- Decide whether you need physical discs. Compare the disc-drive Xbox Series X and standard PS5 with their digital alternatives; Series S is disc-free.
- Match the console to your display. Treat resolution and frame-rate figures as supported-content capabilities, not universal settings. Check the game and display requirements for the titles you care about.
- Compare the exact model and live price. Sony’s stated US prices took effect April 2, 2026; Microsoft announced Xbox increases effective August 1, 2026, and its product-page prices can change. Confirm retailer availability and the included configuration at checkout.
- Resolve portability before choosing a brand. The Xbox and PlayStation sources cited here describe home consoles; they do not establish the Nintendo comparison needed to judge a portable-first choice.
