Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is the clearest modern follow-up if you want another story-rich RPG explicitly connected to Suikoden’s legacy: its Steam listing calls it “A spiritual successor to the Suikoden series.” It is a separate game, not a Suikoden sequel. If you have not played the first two Suikoden games, the most direct next step is Suikoden I&II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, which collects both. The best choice depends on which part of Suikoden you want to continue: gathering allies, building a base, following political conflict, or playing turn-based battles.
Which game should you play after Suikoden?
Start with the option that matches what you mean by “after.” For a modern game identified with Suikoden’s lineage, choose Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. For more Suikoden itself, play the Suikoden I&II HD Remaster if either original is still on your list. Konami’s remaster page describes the collection as bringing back the first two games and names PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC/Steam platforms; check your regional storefront for current availability. Choose by the part of Suikoden you want to keep
If you want to recruit a large cast
Suikoden’s defining recruitment premise is the 108 Stars of Destiny. Konami’s official page describes them gathering to shape the course of history. Konami’s product page. When comparing another RPG, look at how its recruitable characters work: a large roster alone does not mean the game uses the same recruitment structure, gives allies comparable roles, or connects them to the main story in the same way.
Recommended Free Tools
A public recommendation request put the desire plainly: “Looking for a JRPG with lots of recruitable characters like suikoden.” The thread is an example of that kind of question, not evidence about how common the preference is.
If you want a base that grows with your allies
Konami specifically lists home-base management as one of the systems in the remastered games. Konami’s announcement. If a headquarters is what made Suikoden satisfying, compare whether another game lets your recruited allies change or populate a shared base—not just whether it has a hub area.
If you want army-scale battles
Army Battles are another named Suikoden system in Konami’s remaster announcement. Konami’s announcement. That is a different feature from ordinary party combat, so a conventional turn-based RPG may match Suikoden’s battle rhythm without recreating its larger-scale conflicts.
If you want political storytelling
Konami’s description ties the gathering of the 108 Stars of Destiny to shaping history, and its announcement places Suikoden II’s events three years after the first game. Product page; release announcement. These details support the series’ broad historical and political framing, but they are not enough to rank other RPGs by political depth. For that preference, check a game’s own story description rather than assuming that a similar combat system means a similar narrative.
