If you want another game built around surviving escalating enemy waves, start with Brotato: its short, discrete rounds and shopping between waves make it a particularly good fit when you want more build decisions between bursts of combat. If you would rather change the setting or the way combat works, consider Halls of Torment, Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, or 20 Minutes Till Dawn. They are alternatives, not mechanical copies, so the right choice depends on what you want to keep—and what you want to change.

Which Vampire Survivors-like game should you try first?

Use this shortlist as a preference guide, not a tested ranking. The games share broad survivor-like appeal, but the available sources support different levels of detail for each one. Brotato has mechanics verified against its Steam listing; the other three are high-level recommendations, and current controls, platforms, editions, and availability should be checked on their official store pages.

Game Choose it if you want… What sets it apart
Brotato Compact rounds and tactical choices between waves Default auto-fire, optional manual aiming, timed waves, and between-wave shopping, according to Steam
Halls of Torment A darker dungeon-RPG direction A Gamespot recommendation in its roundup of games like Vampire Survivors; specific equipment and progression details are not established here
Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor Mining, objectives, and interaction with the environment A 2025 PC Gamer review describes mission and sub-mission structure and shaping the landscape
20 Minutes Till Dawn A more active combat feel with manual aiming A recommendation for players seeking a more hands-on alternative; verify current controls on its official listing

Brotato: short rounds with decisions between waves

Brotato is the closest pick here if what you enjoy is surviving waves while shaping a build, but you want the action divided into compact rounds. Steam describes it as a top-down arena shooter roguelite that fires weapons automatically by default, with manual aiming available as an option.

The Steam product description says runs last under 30 minutes and individual waves last 20 to 90 seconds. Those are the game’s own description figures, not independently measured performance. Between waves, you can shop for items and weapons, making the pauses part of the build strategy rather than simply a break from combat. Steam also lists local co-op for up to four players.

  • COOPERATIVE SURVIVAL GAME – Work together to endure post-apocalyptic dangers.
  • EXPLORE THE WASTELAND – Randomly generated maps build out as you explore, triggering events and revealing monsters.

That combination makes Brotato a sensible choice if you want shorter, clearly separated encounters and meaningful between-round choices. Check the Steam listing for the current game details and availability: Brotato on Steam.

Halls of Torment: a darker dungeon-RPG direction

If the horde-survival loop appeals to you but you want a darker fantasy presentation, Halls of Torment is a recommendation to investigate. GameSpot includes it in its roundup of games like Vampire Survivors. That supports its place on a shortlist, but does not establish specific details about its equipment systems, progression, platforms, or current editions. Confirm those on the game’s official store page before choosing it.

Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor: mining and mission objectives

Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor takes the survivor-like idea into the Deep Rock Galactic setting. In a review published September 17, 2025, PC Gamer describes a mission and sub-mission structure and discusses shaping the landscape. That makes it worth considering if you want the run to involve more than enduring waves—especially if mining and environmental interaction sound appealing.

20 Minutes Till Dawn: consider it for more active aiming

If you want to be more involved in aiming rather than relying primarily on automatic attacks, 20 Minutes Till Dawn is another option cited in games-like coverage. Its role here is a high-level recommendation for a more hands-on combat alternative; the available information does not verify its exact current controls. Check its official listing to see whether its input style suits you.

How to choose between these alternatives

  • For short, discrete rounds: Start with Brotato; Steam describes timed waves and runs under 30 minutes.
  • For between-round build decisions: Brotato has shopping between waves, according to its Steam listing.
  • For a different setting: Look at Halls of Torment for a darker dungeon-RPG direction, or Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor for mining and mission-focused play.
