If you want pirate ship combat with an officially supported solo option, Skull and Bones is the clearest alternative supported by current official game information. If you already own Sea of Thieves and mainly want to avoid hostile rival crews, try its Safer Seas mode first. Neither option is a perfect match for the full High Seas experience: one emphasizes ship combat and progression, while the other limits content and rewards.
Which solo pirate game should you choose?
| What you want | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Naval combat, ship builds, and progression with solo play supported | Skull and Bones | Ubisoft describes it as a naval action RPG playable solo or in a shared ocean of up to 20 players. Its official descriptions emphasize ship-to-ship combat, equipment, contracts, resources, and progression—not a confirmed equivalent to Sea of Thieves’ first-person sailing and on-foot exploration. Ubisoft’s game page |
| Sea of Thieves’ Voyages and stories without other player crews | Safer Seas | A single-crew world with no other player-controlled crews, but with excluded PvP-focused activities and reduced progression. Xbox Wire’s Safer Seas overview |
| A self-contained pirate story campaign | Investigate Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag | It is a plausible lead for this preference, but current platform availability and product details are not verified here, so check an official store listing before choosing it. |
Skull and Bones: the clearest solo-play alternative
Ubisoft calls Skull and Bones a naval action RPG and says, “Play solo or team up to conquer rival ships and mythical beasts in an ocean of up to 20 players.” That means solo play is supported, but the game still takes place in a shared online world; “solo” does not mean a separate, offline single-player campaign.

What its pirate gameplay focuses on
The central loop is ship combat and advancement: choose ships with different roles, tune loadouts, customize a fleet, take contracts, gather resources, craft ships, and pursue seasonal equipment. Ubisoft places the game in the 17th-century Indian Ocean and describes its activities as PvE or PvEvP. These systems make it a stronger fit for players who enjoy tactical naval fights and building up a ship than for those seeking the same mix of first-person sailing, island exploration, and emergent encounters found in Sea of Thieves. Ubisoft’s page lists a free trial on Steam, Ubisoft Connect, Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, and says trial progress and purchases carry over to the full game. Availability can change, so check the relevant storefront before relying on the trial. The US PlayStation listing is for PS5 and says players can sail alone or team up with two friends. Its accessibility listing includes large text, color alternatives, visual and audio cues, clear subtitles, and game pausing for offline play; those listings do not establish that every feature applies in every platform or online mode. #1 Best Overall
- Welcome, pirates! Have you ever dreamed of being out on the open waves in search of treasure and adventure?
- Well then, the Sea of Thieves is calling!
- Inspired by the hit video game, Sea of Thieves: Voyage of Legends is a competitive seafaring game of piracy for 2-4 players.
- Explore the high seas with your friends in voyages packed with danger and excitement, but don't forget - only one of you can be crowned a Pirate Legend...
- You'll build a fearsome reputation as you compete for that title, battling sea monsters and pilfering plunder as you go.
Sea of Thieves Safer Seas: keep the game, remove rival crews
If your main objection is other crews rather than the game itself, Safer Seas is worth trying before buying something else. Xbox Wire’s December 7, 2023 description says you can sail alone or with up to three friends on a single-crew server, with no other player-controlled crews in the world.
What remains available
Safer Seas retains Trading Company Voyages, World Events, Commendations, and Tall Tales, including the Monkey Island and A Pirate’s Life crossover stories. That makes it a viable way to explore the narrative and voyage side of Sea of Thieves without encountering rival player crews. Xbox Wire’s Safer Seas overview

- A fantastical world of unspoiled islands, mythical monsters and mouth-watering loot. Total freedom to decide how you approach the world and its players
- Xbox One Console exclusive
- Battery: no battery used;Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) Content Description: Crude humor, use of alcohol, violence
What you give up
Safer Seas excludes PvP-centered activities such as Hourglass faction battles and Skull of Siren Song, and Reaper’s Bones is unavailable. Gold and reputation accrue at 30% of High Seas rates, while Trading Company reputation is capped at level 40. Pirate Legend and Athena’s Fortune therefore require High Seas. These are the mode rules described by Xbox Wire in 2023; check the current in-game details for any later changes. Xbox Wire’s Safer Seas overview
Is Skull and Bones a replacement for Sea of Thieves?
Not if what you value most is the complete Sea of Thieves mix. The official descriptions establish Skull and Bones as a solo-playable naval action RPG focused on combat and ship progression, but do not establish matching first-person sailing, on-foot exploration, or player-driven encounters. Choose it for a different pirate game built around ships and combat; choose Safer Seas if you want to keep playing Sea of Thieves with fewer multiplayer risks and accept its progression limits.

How to decide
- You want a new game and ship-combat progression: check the current Skull and Bones trial or storefront listing on your platform, then decide whether its shared-world naval RPG format suits you.
- You want the stories and voyages you already know: launch Sea of Thieves and select Safer Seas, then weigh its quieter single-crew play against its activity exclusions and slower progression.
- You specifically want a solo campaign: research Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag through an official store for your platform. The available evidence here is not enough to confirm its current availability or editions.
