For a co-op story shooter with character builds, try OUTRIDERS—but don’t expect the official descriptions to confirm a Gears-style cover system. Xbox describes it as a 1–3 player co-op RPG shooter, while PlayStation highlights a story playable solo or with friends, class skill trees, and gear modification. If you want the clearest documented match for both campaign co-op and cover-based combat, Gears of War: E-Day is the upcoming same-franchise option: Xbox lists it for October 6, 2026, two days after this article’s October 4, 2026 reference date.
Which games like Gears of War support co-op campaigns?
The verified options here serve different priorities rather than forming a broad ranking. OUTRIDERS is the available co-op story-shooter recommendation for players interested in RPG progression. Gears of War: E-Day is the closer fit for cover-based combat and campaign co-op, but it is not yet released as of October 4, 2026.

|---|---|---|---|
| OUTRIDERS | Story play, class skill trees, and gear modification; Xbox describes it as a co-op RPG shooter. | Xbox lists 1–3 players. PlayStation says the story can be played solo or with friends. | A documented co-op story shooter with build progression; the cited descriptions do not establish close similarity to Gears’ cover combat. |
| Gears of War: E-Day | Origin-story campaign and cover-based combat. | Xbox lists solo, split-screen, and online campaign play for up to four players. | The strongest documented match for both cover combat and campaign co-op, but it is an upcoming release as of October 4, 2026. |
OUTRIDERS: a co-op story shooter with RPG progression
OUTRIDERS fits if your priority is to play a story with friends and develop a character through skills and equipment. PlayStation’s OUTRIDERS listing describes solo or co-op story play, class skill trees, and gear modification. Xbox’s store listing calls it a 1–3 player co-op RPG shooter.
That evidence supports recommending it as a co-op shooter alternative, not as a mechanical duplicate of Gears. The cited listings do not establish how closely its cover mechanics match Gears’ cover-based combat, so players seeking that specific feel should treat the comparison as unconfirmed.

- Want a co-op story shooter now, with skills and gear to develop? Consider OUTRIDERS; its official descriptions establish story co-op and RPG progression, not a close match to Gears’ cover system.
- Want split-screen or online campaign play with cover-based combat? Gears of War: E-Day lists those features, but its Xbox release date is October 6, 2026.
- Need local co-op specifically? The E-Day listing explicitly names split-screen. The cited OUTRIDERS descriptions say solo or with friends and give a player range on Xbox, but do not specify split-screen.
