If you want a free WinZip replacement for everyday archives, start with 7-Zip. Choose PeaZip for a broader cross-platform toolbox, or NanaZip for closer integration with modern Windows. Windows 11 version 24H2 may already handle basic ZIP, RAR, 7z, and TAR files, but Microsoft says encrypted archives require another application.

When 7-Zip is the best choice
7-Zip is the straightforward starting point if your priorities are free software, broad extraction support, and creating ordinary ZIP or 7z archives. The project describes it as free and open source, and documents AES-256 encryption for both 7z and ZIP files.
One interface trade-off is that 7-Zip is more utilitarian than a polished, feature-rich archive manager. The project also publishes a claim that its ZIP and GZIP compression ratio is “2-10 % better” than PKZip and WinZip. That is a 7-Zip project comparison, not an independent benchmark; the cited page does not state a test corpus or methodology, so it should not be taken as a guaranteed result for your files.

PeaZip suits users who want an archive manager with more than basic extraction and compression, particularly if they use Windows, macOS, or Linux. Its official materials list extraction of many formats, including RAR and RAR5, along with archive creation and conversion, volume splitting, encryption, password management, testing, and hashing.

There is an important distinction for RAR: PeaZip can extract RAR archives, but it does not independently create them because of licensing restrictions. Its Windows page says RAR creation is possible if WinRAR is installed. Do not choose it on the assumption that RAR extraction means standalone RAR creation.
When to pick NanaZip
NanaZip is a 7-Zip-based archiver intended for modern Windows, with an emphasis on Windows interface integration, including context-menu support. It is a reasonable option if a more Windows-native experience matters more to you than a cross-platform toolkit. NanaZip says RAR archive creation is not supported because of licensing restrictions; check its current release and your Windows version before downloading.

When Windows’ built-in support is enough
For occasional work with common archives, a separate program may not be necessary. Microsoft documents ZIP, RAR, 7z, and TAR support in Windows 11 version 24H2. However, Microsoft says to use another application, such as 7-Zip or WinRAR, to create or decompress encrypted archives. If password-protected archives are part of your workflow, use a dedicated utility rather than relying only on Windows’ built-in support.

Archive support is not all-or-nothing. A program may open a format without being able to create it. RAR is the clearest example among these choices: 7-Zip lists RAR as unpacking-only, PeaZip extracts RAR/RAR5 but does not independently create RAR, and NanaZip says RAR creation is unsupported. If someone sends you RAR files, extraction support may be all you need; if you must produce RAR archives, verify the creator’s requirements separately.

For encrypted archives, check both sides of the task: whether the application can create an encrypted archive in your chosen format and whether it can open the encrypted files you receive. 7-Zip documents AES-256 in 7z and ZIP, while Windows’ built-in support does not cover encrypted archive creation or decompression according to Microsoft.
