Short answer: Proton VPN Free is the best default for most Mac users who want a genuinely free VPN with unlimited data, strong privacy evidence, leak protection, and a kill switch. Its main limitation is that the free app automatically selects a server, and Proton does not promise the streaming or P2P access available on its paid plans.
PrivadoVPN Free is the better specialist choice for speed and occasional streaming, but its 10 GB allowance resets every 30 days. Windscribe Free offers the most flexible feature set and unlimited personal-device connections, subject to a 2 GB or 10 GB monthly allowance. hide.me Free is the strongest uncapped alternative if eight free locations are enough. TunnelBear Free is best treated as a simple way to test a VPN or handle occasional tasks because its allowance is only 2 GB per account month.
The best free VPNs for Mac at a glance
| Rank | VPN | Best for | Free-plan limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Proton VPN Free | Unlimited everyday privacy | One device; automatic free-server selection; streaming and P2P are not guaranteed |
| 2 | PrivadoVPN Free | Speed and occasional streaming | 10 GB every 30 days; one device; no comparable public independent no-logs audit found in the reviewed sources |
| 3 | Windscribe Free | Features and multiple personal devices | 2 GB without a confirmed email address or 10 GB with one; free-country count needs checking in the app |
| 4 | hide.me Free | Unlimited data with manual free-server selection | Eight locations; one device; unlimited speed is not guaranteed |
| 5 | TunnelBear Free | Beginners and occasional use | 2 GB per account month; manual country selection is not available to free users according to independent testing |
| Honorable mention | Hotspot Shield Basic | Unlimited casual browsing through a U.S. location | Advertising-supported; one U.S. location; one device |
These are rankings of permanently free plans, not premium VPNs with seven-day trials, discounts, or money-back guarantees. A free plan can be used indefinitely without entering payment details or relying on a refund period. That distinction matters because some comparison pages classify paid services such as NordVPN and Surfshark as free Mac VPNs when the actual offer is a trial or refund window. Cybernews provides useful trial comparisons, but those offers answer a different question.

1. Proton VPN Free: best overall
Choose Proton VPN Free if you want a VPN for public Wi-Fi, ordinary browsing, email, messaging, and other everyday Mac use without watching a monthly data meter.
What the free plan includes
- Unlimited data and bandwidth. Proton says it imposes no official data or speed limit.
- Free servers in 10 countries, with the service automatically selecting the available free server rather than giving free users unrestricted manual choice. See Proton’s current plan details.
- One simultaneous VPN connection.
- A kill switch and always-on VPN options.
- DNS and IPv6 leak protection.
- Open-source apps and published privacy documentation.
The combination of uncapped data and privacy-focused controls makes Proton the most practical default. You can leave it enabled during a long workday, a software download, or a video call without consuming a small monthly allowance.
The important limitations
The free server is automatically selected. That is a meaningful disadvantage if you need a particular country, a nearby low-latency server, or a specific streaming catalog. Proton also distinguishes its free plan from paid plans by restricting or not guaranteeing features such as BitTorrent support and premium streaming access. Proton’s free-versus-paid comparison should be checked before using the service for a particular workload.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThere is also conflicting evidence about speed throttling. Proton’s official policy says the free plan has unlimited bandwidth and no official speed limit. In contrast, TechRadar reported throttling after approximately 4 GB in its own testing. These statements should not be silently merged: the provider’s policy is one claim, while an independent test under particular conditions is another. Your result can vary with the assigned server, time of day, route, and account conditions.
Mac-specific details
Proton’s lifecycle documentation lists macOS Tahoe and Sequoia as supported, Sonoma as maintained, and Ventura as deprecated until the end of 2026. Its release notes list macOS app version 6.5.0 dated April 24, 2026. These are time-sensitive details, so check the macOS product lifecycle and current release notes before installing on an older Mac.
Proton’s macOS split tunneling is experimental. The documented implementation supports excluding apps, is limited to WireGuard and Stealth, and has limitations with WebKit-based applications such as Safari. Do not assume that an excluded Safari window follows the ordinary connection simply because Chrome behaves correctly. Proton documents the split-tunneling limitations here.
Privacy evidence
Proton says Securitum’s 2026 audit was its fifth consecutive no-logs audit. According to Proton’s announcement and the published Securitum report, the review found no user-identifiable connection metadata, browsing activity, DNS queries, traffic contents, or persistent records linking users to activity. That is stronger evidence than a policy statement alone, but it remains an audit of the examined systems and period—not a guarantee that a VPN makes anyone anonymous.
2. PrivadoVPN Free: best for speed and occasional streaming
Choose PrivadoVPN Free when speed and a reasonable chance of accessing a streaming service matter more than unlimited usage.
Free-plan facts
- 10 GB every 30 days.
- One connected device.
- A limited group of free locations. The provider’s pricing page lists locations including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Mexico, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States, although independent counts and current app availability can differ.
- After the allowance is used, PrivadoVPN says users can connect to free emergency servers. That should not be described as normal full-speed service without testing the post-cap behavior.
The 10 GB allowance is enough for browsing, several work sessions, or short video-streaming tests. It is easy to exhaust with HD video, operating-system downloads, cloud backups, or torrents. The allowance is not a full-time replacement for an uncapped plan.
Speed and streaming
PrivadoVPN Free is the strongest specialist pick because independent testing has found it substantially faster than other free options and capable of unblocking some streaming services. TechRadar ranked PrivadoVPN Free first in its 2026 free-VPN comparison and reported more than 950 Mbps in its laboratory. That figure came from idealized cloud conditions and recent high-spec hardware; it is not a prediction for a MacBook on home Wi-Fi.
Streaming access is conditional. A result depends on the VPN server, the service, the catalog country, the account’s home region, the app or browser, and the date. A responsible test should state all of those variables and confirm at least 15 minutes of playback. Even a successful result can disappear when a streaming service blocks the server’s IP range.

Mac and privacy considerations
Privado provides a native Mac app and its macOS release log lists version 4.2.0 on July 10, 2026. Check the Mac app page and release log for the current version. Independent testing has reported a kill switch and split tunneling, but feature availability should be verified in the current free app rather than assumed from a paid-plan review.
Privado says it does not log browsing history, traffic destinations, content, IP addresses, or DNS queries. However, no comparable public independent no-logs audit was found in the reviewed 2026 sources. That does not prove the policy is false; it means the privacy evidence is less independently corroborated than Proton’s or hide.me’s. Read PrivadoVPN’s no-logs explanation and weigh the policy claim separately from audit evidence.
3. Windscribe Free: best for features and multiple devices
Choose Windscribe Free if you want one account that can cover multiple personal devices and you are comfortable with a monthly cap.
Allowance and device access
- 2 GB per month without a confirmed email address.
- 10 GB per month after confirming an email address.
- Windscribe says free users can connect unlimited personal devices.
- The provider’s current pages disagree about whether the free plan includes 10 or 11 countries. Capture the in-app list on the date of testing rather than copying a provider-wide location count.
Confirming an email address is optional for the smaller allowance but increases the amount of identifying information associated with the account. That is a normal privacy-versus-usability trade-off, not automatically a security defect. Read the signup screen and privacy policy before deciding.

Features and privacy evidence
Windscribe has an unusually broad free feature set and a detailed privacy position. Its policy says it retains limited operational information, including the last-use date, total bandwidth used over 30 days, and activated app versions. The company also reports that a February 2026 server seizure in the Netherlands allegedly found no user logs. Treat that seizure account as company-reported evidence unless independently corroborated.
Windscribe explains its no-identifying-logs position, and its privacy policy provides the more important detail. A policy, audit, and server seizure are not interchangeable forms of proof: the policy describes intended collection, an audit examines defined systems, and a seizure may test what was present on a particular server.
Mac caveats
Windscribe’s Mac app advertises a broad set of controls, but exact free-tier feature parity should be checked in the current application. Test the kill switch, split tunneling, DNS handling, and behavior after sleep rather than awarding points solely because the product page lists a feature. The current macOS page is the appropriate starting point.
4. hide.me Free: best uncapped alternative
Choose hide.me Free if unlimited data is essential but you prefer manual selection from a smaller free server pool.
Free-plan facts
- Unlimited data.
- Eight free server locations.
- Manual selection from the free pool.
- One connected device.
- No unlimited-speed guarantee; speed restrictions may apply.
- Kill switch, split tunneling, Stealth Guard, WireGuard, and OpenVPN support are documented features, although protocol and free-tier behavior should still be checked in the current app.
Manual selection is useful for choosing a geographically closer location or troubleshooting a congested route. Eight locations are much less choice than a paid plan, however, and the service does not promise that unlimited data also means unlimited speed.
Mac support
hide.me says its Mac app runs natively on Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Its May 2026 release notes list version 6.1.1 as the current App Store release. Consult the Mac software page, Apple Silicon support note, and release notes for current compatibility.
Privacy evidence
hide.me publishes a 2024 Securitum no-logs audit. The provider says the audit found no configurations that could lead to intentional or accidental activity logging. The provider’s explanation links to the Securitum report. As with any audit, read the scope and date rather than treating the result as a permanent technical guarantee.
5. TunnelBear Free: best for occasional use and simple testing
Choose TunnelBear Free when simplicity matters and 2 GB per account month is enough. It is a poor choice as a permanently enabled, full-time VPN.
How the cap works
- 2 GB per account month.
- The allowance resets on the monthly anniversary of account creation, not necessarily on the first day of the calendar month.
- Unused data does not roll over.
- Free users can access the wider network, but independent testing reports that they cannot manually select a country.
Two gigabytes can cover occasional web browsing or a quick test on airport Wi-Fi, but it can disappear during a single software download or a short period of high-quality video. TunnelBear’s free-account documentation explains the allowance and paid-plan differences.
Mac support and transparency
TunnelBear’s current macOS page says the newest version supports macOS 11.0 and later. Its simple interface makes it approachable, but do not copy paid-plan device limits into the free tier without checking the current account and app. TunnelBear publishes recurring independent security audits and a privacy policy stating that it does not collect IP addresses upon VPN connection, DNS queries, or information about websites and services used while connected. Read the current privacy policy.
The supplied source material is inconsistent about the audit count: the 2025 announcement refers to the eighth annual independent security audit, while the current research notes also refer to a ninth audit in 2025. The useful conclusion is that TunnelBear has a substantial recurring-audit record; verify the latest published report rather than relying on the ordinal number. See TunnelBear’s audit announcement.
Honorable mention: Hotspot Shield Basic
Hotspot Shield Basic provides unlimited bandwidth, one virtual U.S. location, one device, and an ad-supported free plan. That makes it usable for basic browsing when a U.S. exit location is acceptable, but advertising and the provider’s data-collection practices deserve closer scrutiny than the privacy-first choices above.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do not infer free access to the provider’s entire network from its global server-location page. Hotspot Shield says free users have access to one U.S. server location. Its free-plan page and plan comparison describe the advertising-supported Basic tier.
Free VPNs that are usually too limited
Avira Phantom VPN Free is not competitive for normal Mac use. It provides 500 MB per month, or 1 GB after registration, according to Avira’s Mac limitation page. That may be enough for a quick emergency connection but not for sustained browsing, streaming, or large downloads.
Other offers should be placed in a separate premium-trial category. A seven-day trial, a 30-day refund period, or a discounted first month may be useful for testing a paid VPN, but it is not a permanently free plan. It may require payment details, may renew automatically, and may require cancellation before the refund deadline.

Comparison of free Mac plans
The table below lists free-tier access, not the provider’s complete paid network. Where the supplied evidence does not establish a detail, it says so rather than converting a paid-plan feature into a free-plan promise.

What a VPN protects on a Mac—and what it does not
A VPN normally creates an encrypted connection between the Mac and a VPN server. It hides the home or hotel network’s view of the contents of properly encrypted traffic, and websites see the VPN server’s public IP address rather than the user’s ordinary public IP. That can help on untrusted Wi-Fi and can sometimes bypass network-level blocking.
The VPN provider becomes a trusted intermediary. It can see or potentially correlate information that the local network can no longer see, which is why logging policies, audits, jurisdiction, technical design, and reputation matter.
A VPN does not:
- Make the user anonymous.
- Prevent a website from recognizing a logged-in account.
- Erase cookies, browser fingerprinting, tracking pixels, or advertising identifiers.
- Remove malware, spyware, or a malicious browser extension.
- Protect a Mac from employer, school, or device-management monitoring already installed on it.
- Guarantee access to Netflix, sports services, banking sites, or censored websites.
- Make copyright infringement lawful.
Proton’s explanation of VPN tracking limits makes the important threat-model point: a commercial VPN is not a magic anonymity layer and cannot protect a compromised device.
Which free VPN is best for streaming?
PrivadoVPN Free is the conditional pick, not a permanent streaming guarantee. Independent reviewers have found it able to access some services, and its selectable free locations can be more useful than a service that automatically assigns a server. The 10 GB cap remains the practical problem: HD video can consume the allowance quickly, and 4K can exhaust it especially fast.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchStreaming tests should identify:
- The VPN server country and city, if shown.
- The streaming service and catalog being tested.
- The test date.
- The account’s country or region.
- The app or browser used.
- Whether playback stayed stable at HD quality for at least 15 minutes.
Classify a result as works only when playback remains stable for at least 15 minutes; partial when the site loads but catalog, playback, or resolution fails; blocked when the service reports a proxy or VPN error or denies playback; and not tested when geography or account limitations prevent a fair test. VPN IP addresses are frequently blocked, so a dated success is not a promise of future access.
Which free VPN is best for torrenting?
There is no universal winner for torrenting. Unlimited data is useful, but a torrenting recommendation also requires confirmed P2P permission, a working kill switch, DNS and IPv6 containment, suitable terms, and ideally port forwarding. A small free allowance can make a technically permitted service impractical.
Proton’s free-versus-paid comparison indicates that BitTorrent support is available on paid plans rather than the Free plan, so Proton VPN Free should not be recommended for torrenting. Independent testers have reported P2P support on PrivadoVPN and some other services, but confirm the current app, server policy, and terms before relying on that result. Never use a VPN as permission to infringe copyright.
A proper P2P test should:
- Confirm the provider’s current terms allow P2P on the free plan and on the selected server.
- Enable the kill switch or always-on mode.
- Verify the public IP, DNS resolvers, and IPv6 state.
- Force a VPN interruption and confirm the client cannot communicate during the gap.
- Check whether port forwarding exists; most free plans do not promise it.
- Stop immediately if the allowance, terms, or privacy behavior is unclear.
How strong is the privacy evidence?
Do not treat every no-logs badge as equivalent. There are at least three different kinds of evidence:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Provider policy: what the company says it collects or does not collect.
- Technical or infrastructure audit: what an outside firm examined during a defined period.
- Real-world corroboration: events such as legal requests or server seizures that may test what records existed.
Evidence by provider
- Proton: provider-published 2026 Securitum audit, described above, plus open-source apps and a no-logs policy. Attribute the findings to Proton and Securitum rather than describing them as a guarantee.
- hide.me: provider-published 2024 Securitum audit reporting no configurations that could cause intentional or accidental activity logging.
- Windscribe: detailed policy and company-reported server seizure in the Netherlands in February 2026, allegedly with no user logs found. The seizure account is not independent corroboration in the supplied material.
- TunnelBear: a privacy policy that excludes IP addresses at VPN connection, DNS queries, and information about websites and services used while connected, plus recurring independent audits.
- PrivadoVPN: a provider claim that browsing history, destinations, content, IP addresses, and DNS queries are not logged, but no comparable public independent audit was found in the reviewed sources.
Even an audit has a scope. It does not inspect every future code change, employee, server, jurisdiction, or possible traffic-correlation technique. A no-leak test also means only that no leak was detected under the tested conditions.
Mac compatibility and app versions
Mac compatibility has two parts: whether the app launches on the operating system and whether it behaves correctly with macOS network extensions, sleep, Wi-Fi changes, Safari, local networking, and Apple Silicon.
- Proton: the supplied lifecycle page lists Tahoe and Sequoia as supported, Sonoma as maintained, and Ventura as deprecated until the end of 2026. Release notes list version 6.5.0 on April 24, 2026.
- PrivadoVPN: the macOS release log lists version 4.2.0 on July 10, 2026.
- hide.me: the provider says the app runs natively on Intel and Apple Silicon; May 2026 App Store release notes list version 6.1.1.
- TunnelBear: the current macOS page says the newest app supports macOS 11.0 and later.
- Windscribe and Hotspot Shield: use the current provider download page to confirm the minimum macOS version and Apple Silicon support before installation.
App versions and support boundaries are volatile. A provider may retain an older download for an unsupported macOS version, but that does not mean the old app receives security updates. If the current app will not run, investigate a manual WireGuard or OpenVPN configuration only when the provider documents it and you understand which features will be lost.
How to install a free VPN on macOS
- Download from the official provider site or the Mac App Store. Do not use third-party download sites.
- Create the free account. Confirm whether an email address is optional, whether confirming it changes the allowance, and whether the signup page is offering a paid trial.
- Open the application and sign in. Check that the account is actually on the free tier rather than a temporary premium trial.
- Approve the VPN configuration. macOS may ask for an administrator password before adding a VPN configuration or network extension.
- Approve the network extension or login item if prompted. Labels vary by macOS version. Proton documents a current route through System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions → Extensions → Network Extensions.
- Enable the kill switch or always-on mode. Do this before using the connection for sensitive traffic.
- Connect to a free server. Remember that some apps automatically choose the free server and others expose only a small free pool.
- Check the public IP and DNS. Use the checks below before assuming the tunnel works.
- Test local devices. If you use a printer, NAS, AirDrop, AirPlay, or a university portal, verify those services before leaving the VPN enabled all day.
If macOS says the extension is blocked, open the System Settings page indicated by the app and inspect Privacy & Security, General, or Login Items & Extensions. Approve the provider’s extension, quit and reopen the app, reconnect, and repeat the leak tests. Exact labels vary by macOS release. Proton’s Mac installation guide illustrates the current permission flow.
How to check for IP, DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leaks
Run the checks while connected and repeat after reconnecting. Test in Safari, Chrome, and Firefox because browser networking behavior can differ.
- Public IP: IPinfo.
- DNS resolvers: DNSLeakTest.
- Browser and WebRTC information: BrowserLeaks.
- IPv6 connectivity: Test IPv6.
Expected results are a public IP associated with the VPN rather than the home ISP, DNS resolvers that do not reveal the home ISP when DNS protection is claimed, and either securely tunneled or unavailable IPv6. A failed IPv6 request is not automatically a leak: the network may simply have no IPv6 route. The failure is different from an ISP-assigned IPv6 address appearing in the test.

These Terminal checks are useful supplementary tests:
curl -s https://ipinfo.io/json
scutil --dns | grep 'nameserver[[0-9]*]'
curl -6 --connect-timeout 10 https://ifconfig.co
No leak detected in these tests means only that no leak was detected under those conditions. It is not proof that every application, protocol, browser extension, or future app update will behave identically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to test a kill switch properly
A kill switch is useful only if it blocks traffic during a tunnel failure. Seeing a disconnected status in the app is not enough.
- Enable the kill switch or always-on setting.
- Connect to a free server.
- Start a continuous request or download.
- Force an interruption by disconnecting Wi-Fi, switching networks, or terminating the VPN connection through the app.
- Confirm that ordinary traffic stops during the interruption.
- Restore the network and confirm traffic resumes only after the VPN reconnects.
- Repeat after sleep and wake, and when switching from Wi-Fi to a phone hotspot.
while true; do
date
curl --connect-timeout 5 -I https://example.com
sleep 2

The correct result is that the request fails during the forced VPN gap and succeeds again only when the protected connection is restored. Test this before trusting a free VPN on public Wi-Fi.
Split tunneling on a Mac
Split tunneling sends selected traffic outside the VPN or sends only selected applications through it. Test both directions: an excluded app should show the ordinary ISP IP, while an included app should show the VPN IP.
Feature labels can be misleading. Split tunneling may depend on the protocol, network extension, app architecture, and browser. Proton specifically limits its macOS implementation to certain protocols, describes it as experimental, and warns about Safari and other WebKit-based apps. Test the actual applications you use rather than awarding a feature point because a settings menu contains the term split tunneling.

What a complete Mac test should measure
The source material includes independent comparison evidence, but not raw in-house results from a reproducible Mac test matrix. The following is the minimum protocol for an article that uses fully tested in its headline. External results must remain attributed to their publishers.
Test environment
Record the Mac model and chip, with at least one Apple Silicon Mac and an Intel Mac if older hardware is part of the audience. Also record the exact macOS version and build, VPN app version, ISP and nominal speed, Wi-Fi band or Ethernet, approximate test location, browser versions, UTC date and time, and whether the account is free, trial, or paid. Use the same Mac, connection, browser, and test server wherever possible. Pause cloud backups, updates, video calls, downloads, and other background traffic.
Installation and account checks
- Record whether the download came from the provider website or Mac App Store.
- Note notarization or any unidentified-developer prompt.
- Record every macOS permission and whether an administrator password is required.
- Note network-extension and login-item approvals.
- Record whether email or phone verification is required.
- Record whether the app asks for payment details or starts a premium trial.
- Measure time from download to first successful connection.
- Restart the Mac and check whether the app launches and reconnects cleanly.
Speed testing
Run three baseline download, upload, and latency tests, then report the median. Repeat at least once during a second time window. Test the provider’s default protocol, WireGuard where available, and OpenVPN TCP or another relevant alternative. Use a nearby server, a distant server, and the automatically selected free server when manual selection is unavailable.
Report percentage change rather than only a large headline number:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Download retention = VPN download ÷ baseline download × 100
Upload retention = VPN upload ÷ baseline upload × 100
Latency increase = VPN latency − baseline latency
Cloud-lab results do not generalize to every Mac. TechRadar explicitly warns that its high-speed measurements use idealized cloud conditions and recent high-spec devices, so a reader may see a very different result.
Reliability testing
Perform 10 connect-and-disconnect cycles, record failures and connection times, change servers five times, sleep the Mac for at least five minutes, reconnect on another Wi-Fi network, restart the Mac, and browse with the VPN connected for at least one hour. Calculate:
Connection success rate = successful connections ÷ attempts × 100
One successful connection is not enough to call a service reliable.
Data-cap testing
For capped plans, record the initial allowance, where it appears, whether the reset is a calendar month, rolling period, or account anniversary, and what happens at 80 percent, 100 percent, and after the cap. Determine whether traffic stops, slows, switches to an emergency server, or prompts for payment. This is an area many reviews simply repeat from the plan page without testing exhaustion behavior.
Streaming matrix
A fair matrix can include Netflix U.S. and one foreign catalog, BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom, Disney+ U.S., Max U.S., a legally region-restricted YouTube video, and Amazon Prime Video U.S. Record login, catalog, playback, resolution, and at least 15 minutes of stable viewing. Mark results as works, partial, blocked, or not tested. Never turn one date’s success into a permanent promise.

Battery and resource testing
Measure idle CPU and memory before connecting and after 15 minutes connected. Record battery percentage over a fixed 30-minute browsing or video session, repeating with WireGuard and the provider’s default protocol. Keep screen brightness, browser tabs, background processes, and workload consistent before making a battery claim.
Troubleshooting free VPN problems on macOS
The VPN will not connect
- Disconnect and reconnect.
- Try another free server or location.
- Change from WireGuard to OpenVPN TCP or the provider’s obfuscated protocol.
- Check that the free allowance has not been exhausted.
- Temporarily test without custom DNS or split tunneling.
- Remove another VPN, proxy, antivirus network filter, or content-filtering profile.
- Try a phone hotspot to separate a home-router or ISP problem from a Mac problem.
- Restart the Mac and retry.
The app connects but websites do not load
Disable split tunneling, check custom DNS, and try another protocol. If local routing is suspected, inspect the allow-LAN setting rather than permanently disabling the kill switch. ISP blocking, Wi-Fi problems, antivirus filters, proxy settings, firewall rules, keychain problems, and network extensions are common causes. Proton’s macOS troubleshooting guide covers these failure categories.
DNS or IPv6 appears to leak
Disconnect and reconnect, rerun DNSLeakTest and Test IPv6, and check whether a second VPN, browser extension, custom resolver, or security product is still active. If IPv6 is not available on the network, a failed IPv6 request is expected; if the real ISP IPv6 address appears, treat that as a failed leak test and contact the provider before using the connection for sensitive traffic.

Run the IP and WebRTC checks separately in Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. Safari is WebKit-based, and Proton explicitly documents WebKit limitations with its macOS split tunneling. Do not assume a Chrome result proves that Safari follows the same route.
Printers, AirDrop, or NAS devices stop working
A full-tunnel VPN can interfere with network printers, NAS devices, AirPlay, local file sharing, smart-home devices, and school or company portals. Test local-network access separately, enable a documented LAN exception or split tunnel where supported, and avoid disabling the kill switch merely to restore a printer.
The VPN disconnects after sleep or a network change
Enable always-on or automatic connection if the free app supports it, reconnect after wake, and test Wi-Fi-to-hotspot transitions. If the app repeatedly loses its network extension, update it, approve the extension again in System Settings, and remove conflicting VPN or filtering profiles.
The data cap has been reached
Do not assume the provider has stopped protecting the connection merely because normal browsing continues. Check whether the app switched to an emergency server, slowed the connection, stopped traffic, or presented a payment prompt. For ongoing use, choose an uncapped provider such as Proton or hide.me rather than repeatedly relying on a depleted capped plan.

How the rankings should be weighted
A sensible comparison should not let one impressive speed result decide the ranking. The following weighting reflects ordinary Mac users who want safe, usable free service:
| Category | Weight | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy and security | 30% | Logging evidence, audits, encryption, kill-switch behavior, and leak results |
| Free-plan usefulness | 20% | Data and speed caps, advertising, server choice, and post-cap behavior |
| Mac performance | 15% | Speed, latency, connection stability, sleep/wake recovery |
| Mac usability | 15% | Installation, permissions, menu-bar controls, and settings clarity |
| Free server access | 10% | Number and usefulness of free locations and manual selection |
| Streaming and P2P | 5% | Dated, reproducible results and policy compliance |
| Support and transparency | 5% | Documentation, audits, troubleshooting, and support options |
Which free VPN should you choose?
- Choose Proton VPN Free for unlimited public-Wi-Fi protection, browsing, email, and messaging.
- Choose PrivadoVPN Free for short streaming sessions or when speed matters more than unlimited data.
- Choose Windscribe Free when multiple personal devices and extra controls matter and 10 GB per month is sufficient.
- Choose hide.me Free when you want uncapped data, manual free-server selection, and a different audited provider.
- Choose TunnelBear Free for a simple interface and occasional use below 2 GB per account month.
- Choose Hotspot Shield Basic only when advertising is acceptable and a single U.S. location meets your needs.
Is a free VPN enough?
Yes, if the goal is occasional browsing or basic protection on public Wi-Fi. Proton VPN Free and hide.me Free are the most practical uncapped choices, provided their location and speed trade-offs fit your needs.
A free plan is usually not enough for heavy streaming, large downloads, torrenting, many simultaneous devices, broad country selection, guaranteed streaming access, or advanced features such as port forwarding. In those cases, a reputable paid plan or a clearly labeled premium trial may be more suitable. Just remember that a trial and a money-back guarantee are not free plans: they can require payment details and cancellation before renewal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Proton VPN Free really free on a Mac?
Yes. Proton VPN Free is designed as an indefinitely usable free tier rather than a short trial or refund period. Proton says it includes unlimited data and bandwidth, one simultaneous connection, and free servers selected by the service. Check the current signup page to confirm that it has not changed into a trial prompt.
Can a free VPN guarantee Netflix or other streaming access?
No. VPN addresses are frequently blocked, and results vary by server, service, catalog, account region, browser, and date. PrivadoVPN Free is the strongest conditional streaming pick in the reviewed evidence, but its 10 GB allowance can be consumed quickly and a successful test is not a permanent guarantee.
Does a VPN make my Mac anonymous?
No. A VPN hides the ordinary public IP from websites and encrypts traffic between the Mac and the VPN server, but it does not defeat logged-in accounts, cookies, browser fingerprinting, malware, tracking pixels, or monitoring software already installed on the Mac.
Which free Mac VPN has unlimited data?
Proton VPN Free and hide.me Free are the principal unlimited-data choices in this comparison. Proton offers a larger free-country pool but automatically selects the free server. hide.me offers eight free locations with manual selection, while warning that unlimited data does not guarantee unlimited speed.
Can I use a free VPN for torrenting?
Only after confirming that the current free plan permits P2P, the selected server supports it, the kill switch blocks traffic during a forced disconnect, and DNS and IPv6 do not leak. Proton’s comparison indicates that BitTorrent support is on paid plans rather than its Free plan. A VPN does not make copyright infringement lawful.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Start with Proton VPN Free for unlimited, privacy-first Mac use. Pick PrivadoVPN Free for speed and short streaming tests, Windscribe Free for features across multiple personal devices, hide.me Free for another uncapped option with manual server choice, and TunnelBear Free only for light, occasional use. Whichever you install, enable the kill switch, verify IP/DNS/IPv6 behavior, and treat streaming, speed, and server availability as date-specific results rather than permanent promises.
