There is no universally best free proxy. The right choice depends on whether you need a maintained free tier, a simple web page relay, or raw IP addresses for testing. None of the public options below should be used for banking, passwords, shopping, work accounts, or private communications.

That combination makes Webshare suitable for learning how proxy-aware software works, testing a scraper against public pages you are authorized to access, checking whether an application correctly handles proxy authentication, or performing occasional low-volume browsing. Because the free endpoints are datacenter proxies, they are generally a better fit for development and lightweight tasks than for demanding geo-targeting, streaming, or large-scale collection.
What to expect from the free tier
- Bandwidth: 1 GB per month is a small allowance. Pages with large images, video, software downloads, and repeated automated requests can consume it quickly.

2. Hide.me: best no-install web proxy
Hide.me is the easiest option for a one-off browser request. Open its web-proxy page, enter the destination URL, select an available location, and submit the request. The provider currently lists Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland as selectable locations. No software installation or account is required.

Hide.me states that the connection to its proxy service uses HTTPS and says that it does not log online activity or personal IP addresses for the free web proxy. Those are provider statements, not independently established facts in this comparison. The service itself also distinguishes its web proxy from a VPN and recommends a VPN for maximum security.
Use this option for viewing an ordinary public web page, checking how a page is presented from a listed country, or using a proxy on a device where you cannot install software. Do not enter passwords, payment information, authentication codes, medical details, or confidential work data into a page reached through a free web proxy.
3. ProxyScrape: best public list and API for technical users
ProxyScrape is aimed at developers who need raw endpoints rather than a polished consumer interface. It publishes free HTTP, HTTPS, SOCKS4, and SOCKS5 lists. Its machine-readable mirror is described as refreshing every five minutes, while its live API is described as updating every minute.
The available metadata can include country, anonymity level, SSL capability, uptime, latency, ASN, ISP, and last-checked time. That is useful when building a test harness that filters and validates endpoints before use. It does not make the endpoints trustworthy. The repository says the data comes from public sources and is supplied as-is without a warranty of fitness.

Public-list inventory is highly volatile. During the research period, the live repository changed its listed count and timestamp; one snapshot recorded 1,552 entries across 92 countries on August 12, 2026. That observation is later than the April 2026 article date and should not be presented as an April inventory or a permanent product specification. More importantly, a large list is not the same thing as a large pool of working, private, or safe proxies.
A safe validation pattern for development
- Download or request a small batch of endpoints.
- Test only against a page or service you own or are authorized to test.
- Measure connection success, response time, and failure rate.
- Discard endpoints that fail, redirect unexpectedly, inject content, or expose unusual behavior.
- Keep credentials, cookies, API keys, and personal data out of the test traffic.
A proxy that responds to a connection test may still log traffic, modify returned content, or stop working minutes later. Validation checks availability—not honesty.
4. Geonode: useful free filtering and browser tools
Geonode offers free tools without signup, including a customizable proxy list with filters for country, proxy type, anonymity, and speed. It also advertises a free Chrome extension that can select from its network, and the list can be exported for development work.
This makes Geonode convenient for readers who do not want to parse a raw text file or build their own filtering interface. It is a reasonable place to experiment with proxy rotation, compare how applications handle different protocols, or find an endpoint for a short-lived test.
Keep the product boundary clear: Geonode’s free public tools are not automatically equivalent to its paid proxy products. Do not infer that the free list has the same reliability, support, compliance controls, or stability as paid infrastructure. It remains an open-proxy resource, so treat every endpoint as untrusted.
5. Spys.one: broad directory, weakest usability here
Spys.one maintains free open-proxy directories organized by country. Its pages provide filters involving location, port, and anonymity, which can help when you are manually looking for an IP in a particular country and other sources do not have a suitable entry.
Its size is not a reason to rank it above managed services. The directory’s own contact information describes the list as free open proxies and says its content is provided as-is without warranties. Independent 2026 comparison coverage characterizes the directory as large but difficult to use, with limited bulk export and inconsistent freshness among entries.

Use Spys.one only as a fallback discovery source for benign, authorized testing. A listed proxy may be offline, slow, blocked, misclassified, or controlled by an unknown operator. Never treat an “anonymous” label in a public directory as proof that the operator cannot identify you.
Free proxy lists versus free proxy providers
Webshare and Hide.me are services with a defined user-facing offering. ProxyScrape, Geonode, and Spys.one primarily expose public endpoint data or tools for finding it. That distinction matters:
- A managed free tier normally gives you credentials, documented limits, and a service relationship. It may still impose bandwidth, location, and policy restrictions.
- A browser proxy relays a web request through a provider’s page. It does not route traffic from other applications on your device.
- A public proxy list gives you addresses whose operators, logging practices, security posture, and continued availability may be unknown.
Longitudinal academic research on free web proxies has found that they often lack the encryption and stability associated with paid services and can expose users to eavesdropping or content modification. The practical rule is simple: use public proxies only for non-sensitive, authorized tasks where failure has little consequence.
Proxy versus VPN: they are not interchangeable
A proxy normally intermediates a particular application or web request. A VPN is designed to create an encrypted tunnel for broader device traffic. Configuring a proxy in a browser does not automatically protect an email client, another browser, a desktop application, or background services.
Even when a web proxy uses HTTPS to connect your browser to the proxy service, the service still has to fetch and relay the requested web content. You should not describe that arrangement as full-device security or guaranteed anonymity. At most, the proxied request may present a different IP address to the destination and receive limited privacy from the relay.

Choose Hide.me when you only need to open an ordinary public web page and do not want to install software or create an account.

Try Spys.one only when manually searching for a country-specific public endpoint and the other sources have not helped.
Choose none of them for banking, shopping, passwords, private messages, business systems, or any traffic where interception or modification would matter.
Security and legal precautions
Using a proxy is not inherently illegal, but the law depends on your jurisdiction and what you do with it. Accessing content without authorization, violating a website’s terms, bypassing access controls, committing fraud, or abusing a service can create legal, contractual, and account risks. A changed IP address does not remove those obligations.

There is also a risk beyond ordinary proxy failure. The FBI has warned that free VPN- or proxy-related applications can sometimes enroll devices into residential proxy networks through hidden terms, software development kits, malware, compromised IoT equipment, or questionable streaming devices. Reduce that risk by installing software only from official app stores or the provider’s legitimate site, avoiding pirated software and suspicious free streaming hardware, and keeping operating systems, browsers, routers, and device firmware updated.
