The best free internet-monitoring tool depends on what you need to watch. For internal devices, bandwidth, servers, and availability, Paessler PRTG is the clearest option in the available vendor information: it offers a 30-day full trial and then an on-premises freeware edition capped at 100 sensors. For public website performance and visitor experience, Pingdom is a closer fit, but its pricing page advertises a free trial rather than establishing a permanent free plan. For network visibility across cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments, Datadog offers a 14-day full-suite trial—not a continuing free tier.

These tools monitor different things. Choose the target first, then compare the free allowance, deployment, checks, alerts, history, setup work, and what happens when a trial ends.

Choose the kind of internet monitoring you need

“Internet monitoring” can refer to external checks of a public website or API, monitoring devices and traffic inside an office network, or correlating network behavior with cloud and application infrastructure. Those are distinct jobs, and the tools below should not be treated as interchangeable.

Before choosing, identify the system you need to observe and the decision an alert should support. A basic website-up check will not explain an office switch’s traffic. Internal device monitoring will not, by itself, tell you how a site behaves for visitors.

Paessler PRTG: best fit for small internal networks seeking a lasting free edition

PRTG is the strongest match here if you want to monitor devices, bandwidth, servers, and availability from an on-premises Windows installation. Paessler says the full trial lasts 30 days and includes all sensor types, alerting, dashboards, and historical data without artificial limits. Afterward, its on-premises freeware edition remains available for up to 100 sensors. The free limit applies to sensors, not devices: a device using several checks consumes several sensors, so device coverage depends on how you configure monitoring.

How PRTG discovers and monitors equipment

Paessler describes an initial scan of defined IP ranges that identifies devices and creates a starting set of sensors. PRTG supports SNMP, WMI, ICMP/Ping, and flow protocols. Flow monitoring requires you to enable flow export on the relevant router or switch; installing PRTG alone does not make that device export traffic data.

PRTG also describes threshold-based alerts through email, mobile push, HTTP actions, and other channels, as well as historical data for troubleshooting. The freeware edition supports SNMP and flow-based monitoring, subject to the 100-sensor ceiling. The vendor page identifies PRTG Network Monitor version 26.1.116.1532, dated February 9, 2026; check Paessler’s current documentation and licensing details before deployment.

Estimate whether 100 sensors will cover your network

Inventory the devices and the checks that matter before relying on the free edition. A router might need separate sensors for availability, traffic, and interface conditions; a server could need checks for reachability and other monitored values. Count the actual sensors assigned, not just the hardware list. Start with critical devices and the alerts that would prompt action, then see whether that configuration fits within the limit.

ConnectSense Rebooter Pro – Smart Automatic Router & Modem Rebooter | Internet Monitor, Power Cycle Scheduler, Remote Reboot via App, Local HTTPS API - MPN: CS-REBOOTER-PRO
  • NEVER MANUALLY REBOOT YOUR ROUTER AGAIN – The ConnectSense Rebooter Pro plugs between your modem or router and the wall outlet, automatically detecting lost internet connectivity across up to 5 network targets and power cycling your equipment instantly — keeping your home, office, or remote location always online 24/7.
  • SCHEDULED & AUTOMATIC REBOOTS – Set up to 10 custom reboot schedules to proactively clear memory leaks, prevent slowdowns, and keep your connection fresh — even before problems occur. Perfect for smart homes, security cameras, smart locks, thermostats, and any device that depends on a stable internet connection.
  • REMOTE CONTROL FROM ANYWHERE – Trigger a manual reboot anytime from the free ConnectSense app (iOS & Android) or directly from your home network. Whether you're traveling, at work, or managing a vacation rental or remote office, you stay in control of your network without needing to be on-site.
  • AUTOMATIC POWER OUTAGE RECOVERY – When the power goes out, the Rebooter Pro automatically restores and reboots your networking equipment once power returns, eliminating downtime and the need for manual intervention. Ideal for unattended locations, rental properties, and small business networks.
  • INTEGRATOR & PRO-GRADE FEATURES – The only router rebooter with a built-in local HTTPS API, giving IT professionals, smart home integrators, and power users advanced automation, monitoring, and remote management capabilities — no cloud subscription required for local control.

PRTG’s on-premises installation runs on Windows. A business with no suitable always-on Windows host could consider existing infrastructure or a Windows mini PC, but Paessler’s information here does not establish a minimum hardware specification or endorse a particular model. Do not buy new hardware until you have confirmed the workload and operating requirements.

Pingdom: website checks and visitor experience, with a trial rather than a verified free tier

Pingdom is a more direct category match when the question is whether a public website is reachable, how it performs, whether a transaction works, or how pages feel to real visitors. Its product areas distinguish synthetic monitoring from real-user monitoring (RUM): synthetic checks assess availability and performance through configured tests, while RUM is intended to show performance from visitors’ perspective.

SolarWinds’ Pingdom pricing page, accessed September 29, 2026, presents configurable Synthetic Monitoring and RUM subscriptions and says the trial includes both. The captured pricing information establishes a trial, not an ongoing free plan or a reliable current subscription amount. If you need monitoring after the trial, verify current plan terms directly with Pingdom before building it into a business process.

Datadog: broad network visibility across infrastructure

Datadog Network Monitoring is aimed at teams that need to investigate connectivity, devices, and traffic across cloud, hybrid, and on-premises environments. Datadog describes correlating network information with infrastructure and application data, which makes it a broader observability use case than a simple check that a public site responds.

PumpFuse PFA01 Internet Watchdog | Auto Router Rebooter | Fixes Frozen Internet | No Cloud, No Subscription | Vacation Rental & Smart Home Essential | Works with Home Assistant, OpenClaw & Local API
  • Auto-Fixes Frozen Internet — No More Manual Reboots. Continuously monitors your connection by pinging 3 independent DNS servers every 60 seconds. All must fail multiple consecutive checks before action is taken to help prevent false alarms. When your router becomes unresponsive, Internet Watchdog automatically power-cycles it and verifies the connection is restored before resuming monitoring. Operates 24/7 while you sleep, travel, or work.
  • Smart Retry Logic — Prevents Rapid Reboot Cycles. Built-in grace periods allow your internet time to recover before any reboot. If the first restart does not resolve the issue, Watchdog waits 30 minutes and retries, up to 3 total attempts. If the problem persists, it stops retrying and provides LED and app indication. Designed to avoid unnecessary reboot loops and repeated power cycling.
  • Scheduled Daily Reboots — Optional Preventative Maintenance. Set a daily reboot time, such as 4:00 AM, to refresh your router and help reduce slowdowns. Ideal for vacation rentals and short-term rental properties that require consistent guest WiFi. Uses the same controlled reboot process with connection verification.
  • Free PumpFuse App — Setup in About 60 Seconds, No Account Required. Download the PumpFuse app for iOS or Android, connect via Bluetooth, enter your WiFi credentials, and complete setup in minutes. Monitor status, review event history, adjust settings, and trigger manual reboots from your phone. No cloud account, no subscription, and no ongoing service fees. For users who prefer notifications, compatible Home Assistant integration supports automation-based alerts for all 9 device events.
  • Smart Home and Developer Ready — Local Control and Integration. Automatically discovered by Home Assistant via MQTT with 11 available entities including sensors, switches, and controls for automation dashboards. Includes a full local REST API accessible via device-specific .local hostname, eliminating the need to look up IP addresses. Built-in MCP server supports OpenClaw and other compatible AI assistants. Designed for local network control.

Datadog’s product page advertises a 14-day free trial of the entire product suite. That is a time-limited evaluation, not evidence of a permanent free monitoring tier. The available product information does not establish ongoing plan costs or a free allowance beyond that trial; confirm both directly with Datadog before deciding whether it fits your budget.

Compare more than the word “free”

A free trial and a continuing free edition solve different problems. A trial lets a team evaluate broad features temporarily; a lasting tier can support a small deployment but may impose limits that shape coverage. Compare these practical details before setup:

  • Target and protocols: Confirm whether the product checks public sites, internal devices, network flows, or application-linked infrastructure—and that it supports the signals you need.
  • Deployment: Decide whether an on-premises Windows host is acceptable or whether a hosted service better fits your operations.
  • Allowance and counting unit: Determine whether limits apply to sensors, checks, hosts, or another unit. PRTG’s freeware limit is 100 sensors, not 100 devices.
  • Check frequency and vantage points: Confirm how often checks run and where they originate. The vendor information summarized here does not establish a comparable frequency or geographic coverage across these products.
  • Alerts and escalation: Check which channels are available and whether they reach the person responsible for acting on an incident.
  • History: Verify how much history is available and whether it is enough to investigate recurring problems.
  • Operating effort: Include installation, device discovery, configuring checks, enabling flow export where necessary, and maintaining the monitoring host.
  • After the free period: Establish what stops, remains available, or becomes chargeable when a trial ends, and review current commercial-use terms.

Current authoritative free-plan limits and commercial-use terms for hosted uptime services such as UptimeRobot and Better Stack are not established here, so they are not ranked as free options. Likewise, the Zabbix features page did not provide enough verified detail to make specific claims about its current free setup in this comparison. Check each vendor’s official pricing and terms before adopting another service.

Set up a useful monitoring plan before alerts start

  1. Write down the failure you need to detect. Examples include an office gateway becoming unreachable, a server losing availability, a website failing to load, or an application’s connectivity degrading. Match the check to the symptom.
  2. Choose the measurement point. Internal monitoring can reveal device or traffic conditions from inside your network. External website monitoring answers whether a service can be reached from a monitoring vantage point. Broader observability is useful when you need to connect network symptoms with application and infrastructure data.
  3. Start with critical systems and a small set of checks. For PRTG, this also makes the 100-sensor ceiling easier to estimate. Add checks that answer a specific operational question rather than monitoring every possible metric immediately.
  4. Set actionable thresholds and recipients. An alert should identify a condition someone can investigate. PRTG describes threshold-based email, mobile push, HTTP actions, and other alert channels; choose the channel your team actually monitors.
  5. Test the alert path and review history. Confirm that a known threshold or outage produces the intended notification. Historical data can help distinguish a one-off interruption from a recurring issue.
  6. Recheck the free-plan boundary before depending on it. Record when a trial expires, the lasting allowance if one exists, and what your team will do if monitoring needs exceed it.

If the business task is capturing a clean page image or PDF rather than monitoring network health, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it accepts cookie banners and removes known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and only clean shots are billed. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for network-device or uptime monitoring.

One GET request returns a screenshot or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the available options.

MySpool Internet WiFi Outage Detector with Text Message and Email Alerts
  • INTERNET OFF AND ON ALERTS IN MINUTES: This Wifi internet outage detector reports to the MySpool cloud several times every minute. Two missed check-ins send an Internet OFF alert, usually delivered within 1 to 3 minutes, and an Internet ON alert follows the moment service returns.
  • RECIPIENTS AND TIMING YOU CONTROL: Send alerts to up to 5 email addresses plus one SMS number. Internet ON and Internet OFF notifications can be configured separately, so you can enable both or only the alerts you need. Set active hours to help avoid unwanted notifications during the night.
  • NO APP, NO HUB, NO SOFTWARE: This wireless internet monitor plugs into any open LAN port on your router or switch and runs on its own. Nothing to install on a phone or PC, no gateway or bridge to buy, and no smart home ecosystem to join. A/C power cable with adapter is included.
  • SET YOUR OUTAGE THRESHOLD: A dashboard slider sets the outage interval anywhere from 2 to 30 minutes, so a brief dropout never fires an internet down alert. Every event is logged with a timestamp on a secure web page you can show your provider.
  • RELIABLE REMOTE INTERNET MONITORING: Runs continuously with no manual input, making it practical for vacation homes, rental properties, branch offices, server closets, and camera or NVR cabinets. Designed by Bell Labs engineers, this device monitors your internet connection around the clock for outages.

Common selection and setup problems

“We have 100 devices, so PRTG’s free edition should fit.”

That conclusion uses the wrong unit. The limit is 100 sensors, and each device’s configured checks affect consumption. Count the intended sensors before assuming all devices fit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The trial page says free, so the service stays free.”

Not necessarily. PRTG documents both a 30-day full trial and an on-premises freeware edition, while the captured Pingdom and Datadog pages establish trials only. Check what remains available after the trial and whether it suits the deployment you intend to keep.

“PRTG is installed, but flow data is missing.”

Flow analysis requires flow export to be enabled on the router or switch. Confirm that the device is configured to export the flow data PRTG is expected to receive.

“A website check is green, but users still report trouble.”

A simple availability result does not answer every performance or transaction question. For website monitoring, distinguish availability checks from performance, transaction, and real-user measurements; Pingdom describes synthetic monitoring and RUM as separate areas.

“We need to troubleshoot across cloud and on-premises systems.”

A standalone uptime check may not provide the context needed to correlate network behavior with infrastructure and applications. Datadog describes this broader cross-environment use case, but confirm its current costs and post-trial terms before adopting it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which option should a business choose?

Evaluate PRTG first if your priority is internal device, bandwidth, server, and availability monitoring and you can operate an on-premises Windows host. Choose a website-focused service such as Pingdom when synthetic checks or real-user performance data are the central need, while treating the documented offer as a trial unless the vendor confirms otherwise. Consider Datadog when you need network information correlated across cloud, hybrid, and on-premises infrastructure and applications, and have verified the ongoing commercial terms.

The right “free” tool is the one whose monitoring target and post-trial allowance match the business need—not simply the one with the most generous-sounding trial.
