For most people, Barchart Trader is the best free starting point. It combines agricultural futures and cash-market prices with charts, alerts, news and market statistics in a mobile app. You must create an account, and the free download does not guarantee free real-time exchange quotes: some feeds and exchange access can be delayed, limited or sold as premium services.
Use CME Group’s agriculture pages and CME Direct when contract specifications and official exchange data are more important than a broad watchlist. If you sell grain through a participating local merchandiser, that company’s producer app may be the only practical way to see local cash bids, delivery information and farm-specific alerts.
Which free app should you choose?
Your best choice depends on whether you need a broad market dashboard, authoritative exchange information or a local producer workflow.

A “free app” generally means the download costs nothing. It does not mean every quote is free, live or exchange-authorized. Check the quote timestamp and entitlement terms before using a price to place an order, set a hedge or make a delivery decision.

What to check before installing any commodity-price app
Data latency and timestamp
Prices can be delivered as real-time, delayed, end-of-day or historical data. CME Group explicitly distinguishes all four delivery cadences. A quote marked “delayed” can be useful for research and planning but is not a substitute for a live execution price. End-of-day data is appropriate for reports, journaling and trend review, while historical data supports back-testing and seasonal analysis.
Look for the timestamp, exchange label and a “delayed” or “real-time” notice on each quote screen. Do not infer that a fast-refreshing chart is live; an app can redraw delayed data every few seconds without receiving a new exchange trade.
Market breadth
Some apps show exchange futures only. Others add physical or cash-market prices. Futures help you follow standardized contracts and hedge price exposure; cash bids reflect what a local buyer is offering for a specific location, delivery window, quality and basis. A futures quote cannot tell you the exact price you will receive at your elevator.

Barchart Trader requires a login to access features. CME tools can expose additional content after you sign in or establish the appropriate account and data entitlement. Producer apps are tied to the grain company named in the app listing, so a download may be useless outside that company’s service territory.
Alerts and chart behavior
Confirm whether alerts are based on last trade, settlement, a cash bid or a technical condition. Check the contract month behind a symbol: a December corn chart and a March corn chart can move differently, and an app may switch the “front” contract as expiration approaches. Save the contract month in your notes when you record a price.
Barchart Trader: the broadest free starting point

The app can serve two different jobs:
- Market monitoring: create a watchlist for futures contracts, review charts and follow market news.
- Physical-market awareness: compare available cash-price information with the futures market rather than treating the futures quote as a local bid.
How to set it up
- Install Barchart Trader from your device’s official app store.
- Create or sign in to a Barchart account. The product description says a login is required to access features.
- Search for the agricultural contracts and cash instruments you follow, then verify the exchange, contract month and quote timestamp.
- Add the instruments to a watchlist so you can compare contracts without repeatedly searching.
- Configure price alerts only after checking whether the alert uses delayed or real-time data and whether a premium feed is required.
- Open the chart settings and label the contract month, interval and data type in your own records.
Where it falls short
The free download is not a promise of unrestricted live exchange data. Barchart advertises premium feeds and may apply trial or subscription terms to real-time access. If the app shows a delayed quote, use it for context and planning, then obtain an authorized live quote from your broker or data provider before executing a trade.

Cash prices also vary by location, grade, delivery date and basis. Treat a Barchart cash figure as a market reference unless it identifies the exact buyer and terms that apply to your grain.
CME Group agriculture pages and CME Direct: the authority for contract and data details
Why use CME’s tools
CME Group publishes the specifications for its agricultural futures and options. Its agriculture pages also describe free pricing and analytics tools, watchlists and alerts, with a mobile CME Direct app available. This is the place to verify what a contract represents, its expiration structure and the exchange on which it trades.
CME’s agriculture-data information separates real-time, delayed, end-of-day and historical delivery and describes downloadable and API access. That distinction is useful when you are deciding whether a free screen is adequate or whether you need a paid entitlement for live monitoring or automated analysis.
A practical CME workflow
- Open the CME agriculture product pages and identify the exact futures or options contract you need.
- Read the contract specification before building a watchlist. Confirm the contract unit, quotation convention, delivery or cash-settlement method, contract months and expiration rules.
- Use the available pricing or analytics view to inspect the quote timestamp and delivery cadence.
- Sign in to CME Direct if you need account-based watchlists, alerts or additional tools.
- For historical work, download the appropriate historical series; for software integration, review the stated API or download access and its entitlement requirements.
- Record whether each observation is real-time, delayed, end-of-day or historical so later comparisons are not misleading.
When CME is a better choice than a general app
- You are checking a contract specification before hedging or trading.
- You need to distinguish exchange-published data from a third-party display.
- You are comparing data delivery options for a spreadsheet, model or API.
- You want to confirm the correct contract month and expiration rather than rely on an app’s default symbol.
CME’s tools do not replace a local elevator bid. They provide the exchange reference and contract framework; your merchandiser supplies the location-specific basis, quality adjustments, delivery window and other commercial terms.

Total Grain Marketing
Total Grain Marketing advertises a free producer download with cash-bid charts, futures expirations, local weather, USDA news and personalized futures alerts. For a producer who already sells through Total Grain Marketing, those features can put the local bid and the futures reference in one workflow.

The listing recorded version 2.2.0 on August 8, 2025. That is release metadata, not a guarantee that every feature or bid is current in every location. Confirm that your account and delivery points are supported before relying on alerts.
Buchheit Agri
Buchheit Agri advertises a free producer app with expiration and price-chart functions. Google Play listed its last update as August 7, 2025. The update date indicates when the listing was refreshed; it does not establish a particular quote latency or guarantee service outside the company’s operating area.
Global Grain
Global Grain likewise advertises a free producer download with expiration and price-chart functions. As with other merchandiser apps, the value comes from the company-specific relationship and local information, not simply from installing the software.
How to decide whether a producer app is worth using
- Ask whether your elevator or merchandiser is the app’s participating business.
- Verify that your delivery locations and crops appear in the account.
- Compare the displayed cash bid with the bid board, phone confirmation or written contract from the buyer.
- Check how often bids, weather and alerts update, especially during volatile markets.
- Keep a separate exchange-data source if you need contracts or markets that the producer app does not list.
Futures prices versus local cash bids
Futures and cash bids answer different questions. A futures contract is standardized and trades on an exchange for a stated month. A cash bid is a buyer’s offer for a physical commodity at a particular place and time. The relationship is often discussed through basis, but basis can change with location, transportation, storage, quality and demand.
Use a futures-focused app to answer questions such as:
- How is the December corn contract moving?
- What is the spread between nearby and deferred contract months?
- Has the market reached a level that should trigger an alert?

- What is my local elevator bidding for delivery this week?
- Which delivery periods are open?
- What weather or USDA information does my buyer publish alongside its bids?
Never substitute one for the other. A rising futures price does not guarantee that your local cash bid rises by the same amount, and a local bid change does not necessarily signal a broad futures-market move.

Sometimes, but a free download alone does not establish that they are. The quote may be delayed because of exchange licensing, displayed at end of day for free, or available live only during a trial or paid entitlement. CME Group documents real-time, delayed, end-of-day and historical delivery as separate categories; Barchart states that premium feeds and real-time exchange access may require payment or trial terms.
Use this verification sequence whenever timing matters:
- Read the quote’s timestamp and look for a delayed-data label.
- Check the exchange and contract month.
- Refresh or reopen the instrument and see whether the timestamp advances during active trading.
- Read the app’s data-entitlement or pricing notice.
- For an order, confirm the current executable quote through your broker or another authorized live source.
Even a live quote can be unsuitable for execution if the market is thin, the contract is illiquid or your order is routed elsewhere. The app is a monitoring aid, not a guarantee of fill price.

For a farmer or grain producer
- Install the producer app offered by your merchandiser, if one exists.
- Install Barchart Trader for broader futures, news and chart context.
- Use the producer app for local bids and Barchart or CME for contract-month comparisons.
- Set alerts for the futures levels and delivery periods that matter to your marketing plan.
- Save screenshots or export records when a bid matters, because app screens can change after a quote updates.
For a futures trader or analyst
- Use CME agriculture pages to verify the contract specification.
- Use CME Direct or Barchart Trader to build a watchlist and chart the relevant months.
- Mark every observation as real-time, delayed, end-of-day or historical.
- Use a broker or authorized live feed for execution decisions.
- Review the app’s alert trigger and notification permissions so a phone operating-system setting does not suppress a signal.
For a student or casual observer
Start with the free tier of Barchart Trader or CME’s free pricing and analytics tools. Delayed or end-of-day data is usually sufficient for learning contract months, chart patterns and seasonal comparisons. Do not pay for live data until you can identify a specific decision that requires it.
Common problems and fixes
The app shows a price that differs from another screen
First compare the contract month, exchange, currency, quote type and timestamp. One screen may show settlement while another shows last trade; one may be delayed while the other is live. If both are supposedly live, check whether one chart rolls to a new front month.

There is no local cash bid
A general futures app may not cover your elevator. Search for the producer app of the merchandiser that buys your grain, or confirm the bid directly with the elevator. Cash bids are inherently local and cannot be inferred from an exchange quote alone.
Alerts arrive late or not at all
Verify that the alert is enabled for the correct contract, that push notifications are allowed by the phone, and that the trigger is based on the data cadence you expect. A delayed feed can produce a delayed alert even when the phone is working normally.
A free feature disappears after installation
Review the account and subscription screen. Barchart requires a login and may place premium feeds or real-time exchange access behind payment or trial terms. CME tools can also vary by account and entitlement. Cancel a trial before renewal if the required data is not included in the free tier.
The producer app cannot find your account
Confirm that you are using the exact merchandiser app and that your phone number or email matches the buyer’s records. Contact the local business rather than creating multiple accounts; regional apps are often limited to participating producers and delivery points.
Free does not mean risk-free
Commodity prices can move sharply, and a stale quote can create a false sense of precision. Keep these safeguards in place:
- Write down the quote time and data status before acting.
- Separate futures price, basis and final cash price in your records.
- Confirm contract size and expiration before entering an order.
- Use two independent displays when a quote appears unusual.
- Do not treat an app alert as an execution instruction.
- Protect account credentials and enable device security, especially when an app stores watchlists or producer-account information.
Bottom line: the right free app depends on your market
Choose Barchart Trader for the broadest documented combination of agricultural futures, cash prices, charts, alerts, news and statistics. Choose CME Group agriculture pages and CME Direct when you need authoritative contract details or a clear distinction between real-time, delayed, end-of-day and historical data. Add a producer app such as Total Grain Marketing, Buchheit Agri or Global Grain only when that merchandiser serves your operation and you need local bids or producer-specific workflow.
Before relying on any quote, verify its contract, location, timestamp and data entitlement. That five-second check is more important than whether the app itself was free.
