For a team of up to 10 employees at one location, Homebase is the clearest free alternative to When I Work in the available plan information. Sling may suit a larger team if its current free-plan user limit and features meet your needs; Connecteam is worth comparing if your small frontline team needs more scheduling controls. Free-plan limits change, so confirm the live terms before moving your schedules.

Homebase: a straightforward fit for one-location teams
Homebase is the strongest match in this shortlist if you have no more than 10 employees at one location and want scheduling alongside basic attendance workflows. Before switching, confirm whether the way your team handles shift swaps, open shifts, approvals, and payroll handoff is covered. The listed free-plan details do not settle every one of those workflow questions.
Sling: investigate it if the reported user cap matters
Connecteam’s June 2026 comparison reports that Sling’s free plan supports up to 30 users and includes basic scheduling, a team newsfeed, and private messaging. It also reports that time tracking and some coverage workflows are not included free. Because these detailed claims come from a competitor’s comparison, check Sling’s current plan page before relying on the user limit or feature list.
Rank #2
Sling could be a candidate when your team exceeds Homebase’s advertised free limit, but a higher user allowance is useful only if the free plan also supports your scheduling and attendance process. Verify how Sling counts users and which coverage features you need.

Connecteam’s June 2026 comparison describes a free plan for up to 10 users and lists shift swaps, open shifts with approval, templates, recurring shifts, and time tracking. The same comparison flags setup complexity. These are vendor-published comparisons of Connecteam’s own service, so confirm current limits and included features on its official plan page.

That combination may be worth evaluating for a small frontline team with more structured shift coverage needs. Allow time to determine whether its setup and day-to-day workflow suit your managers and employees.
Check these workflows before you switch
- Count the people and locations. Confirm how each vendor defines a user or employee, whether inactive staff count, and whether the free plan restricts you to one location.
- Map availability and time off. Check whether employees can submit availability and time-off requests on the free tier, and how managers review them.
- Test coverage changes. Verify shift swaps, open shifts, and approval rules—especially if employees regularly trade shifts or managers need to fill last-minute gaps.
- Follow a shift from schedule to payroll. Confirm whether the plan includes clock-in, timesheets, and the export or handoff your payroll process requires. Do not assume that scheduling access includes every attendance feature.
- Check notifications and adoption. Make sure employees receive schedule changes in a form they will see, and assess how much setup or training managers will need.
- Review what happens when you outgrow free. Compare the paid plan’s pricing basis—such as per employee, location, hub, or team—and the features that trigger an upgrade. Current comparable upgrade prices are not established in the plan information here.
- Recheck the terms immediately before migrating. Free limits and feature access can change. Review each provider’s official pricing page and confirm any detail that affects your operating workflow.
