Apex Legends is the closest pick if you want fast, competitive squad fights and distinctive character abilities. Choose PUBG: Battlegrounds for a more grounded shooter feel, Call of Duty: Warzone for military-style battle royale, or Fall Guys if you want the elimination format without guns. None reproduces Fortnite’s building and presentation exactly, so the best substitute depends on what you want to keep.

How to choose a Fortnite alternative

Fortnite’s Battle Royale combines survival, exploration, scavenging, and a last-player-standing objective, with solo and squads of two to four. That mix is only one part of its identity. Before switching, decide which parts matter most: team coordination, movement, character abilities, weapon handling, or a lighthearted elimination contest. Epic’s Battle Royale documentation describes the core format.

  • Want a competitive squad shooter? Start with Apex Legends.
  • Prefer a more grounded, weapon-focused feel? Consider PUBG: Battlegrounds.
  • Want military-themed shooting and battle royale modes? Look at Call of Duty: Warzone.
  • Mostly want silly elimination rounds? Try Fall Guys; it is a party-game alternative, not a shooter substitute.

Fortnite alternatives at a glance

Game Best fit What changes from Fortnite Evidence and caveat
Apex Legends Fast squad combat and character abilities Hero abilities and rapid movement are central to its feel; it offers ranked and casual modes. Platform and account details come from EA; gameplay-fit descriptions are editorial comparisons.
PUBG: Battlegrounds A more grounded shooter presentation and weapon customization Its tone and emphasis on weapon customization differ from Fortnite’s distinctive presentation. This characterization is from GamesRadar+’s March 17, 2026 guide, not an official comparison or controlled review.
Call of Duty: Warzone Military-style combat and battle royale Its military setting and weapon/attachment complexity give it a different flavor. Activision’s page lists Battle Royale and Resurgence, but seasonal details can change.
Fall Guys Casual, comic elimination play Obstacle-course rounds replace scavenging and shooting. Epic describes it as a party royale; it is the loosest match here.

1. Apex Legends: best for fast squad fights

Apex Legends is the strongest starting point if the draw of Fortnite is coordinating with a team while fights move quickly. Its characters have distinct abilities, so squad composition and using those abilities are part of the combat loop. It is not a Fortnite clone: expect a character-based shooter rather than Fortnite’s building and visual style.

Modes and platform access

EA lists Apex Legends as free to play on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC through the EA app and Steam. EA also says play requires an EA account and persistent internet; age restrictions and in-game purchases apply, and a platform account or subscription may also be required. Store availability and subscription requirements can vary by region and platform, so check the local store before installing. See the Apex Legends FAQ.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale
  • Play as your favorite PlayStation characters with all their signature moves
  • Dynamic environments straight from the characters' worlds
  • Interactive mash-up events featuring additional PlayStation characters
  • Local and Online tournament modes
  • Never Stop Playing with Cross-Save and Cross-Play between the PS3 and PS Vita

EA’s mode guide describes Ranked as matching players around rank, Wildcard as a faster, streamlined mode, Bot Royale Evolved as a mix of human players and bots, and Mixtape as a rotating selection of modes. Names and rules may change; consult EA’s current mode guide for the latest descriptions.

2. PUBG: Battlegrounds: best for a more grounded feel

PUBG: Battlegrounds is worth considering if Fortnite’s bright, stylized presentation is not what you want and you would rather focus on a more grounded shooter feel and weapon customization. That distinction is an editorial characterization in GamesRadar+’s March 17, 2026 battle royale guide, not a verified feature-by-feature comparison or a claim about how the game performs for every player. Check its current platform store listing for availability on your device and in your region.

3. Call of Duty: Warzone: best for military-style battle royale

Warzone fits players looking for a military setting and familiar Call of Duty-style shooting. Activision’s official page describes Battle Royale and Resurgence and links to PC and console storefronts. It showed a Season 04 label when reviewed, so treat that as a changeable seasonal detail rather than a promise about the current lineup. Visit the official Warzone page to check current modes and the store for your platform.

4. Fall Guys: best for lighthearted elimination rounds

Fall Guys keeps the contest-to-one-winner idea but replaces shooting, scavenging, and combat with obstacle courses. Epic describes it as a cross-platform party royale in which contestants compete through courses until one victor remains. Pick it when you want playful elimination rounds rather than a close mechanical match for Fortnite. See Epic’s Fall Guys documentation.

Which alternative should you try first?

  • Choose Apex Legends if squad combat, quick movement, and character abilities are your priorities.
  • Choose PUBG: Battlegrounds if you want a more grounded tone and weapon customization.
  • Choose Warzone if you want military-themed shooting and battle royale or Resurgence modes.
  • Choose Fall Guys if the fun is in elimination and reaching a final winner, not in gunfights.

For any of the four, confirm the current store listing for your device and region. Platform availability, account requirements, and mode lineups can change; the official EA and Activision pages are the best places to verify their respective details.
