For a book-style foldable, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 is the most balanced choice in the cited reviews; for a compact flip, the Motorola Razr (2026) is the lower-cost option. The Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold stands out for its dust-and-water rating and Qi2 charging, while the Motorola Razr Fold offers a larger inner screen and stylus support. These are publication reviews and specifications, not hands-on testing by itechguides.com. Prices and availability can change, so check your country, storage configuration and retailer before buying.
Which type of foldable phone should you buy?
Choose the shape before choosing the model. A flip phone folds into a compact square and provides an outer screen for quick tasks such as checking notifications. A book-style phone opens into a larger display suited to reading, viewing and using multiple apps at once.
- Choose a flip if a smaller folded footprint matters more than having a tablet-sized screen. Its outer display can handle some tasks without opening the phone.
- Choose a book-style foldable if you expect to use the larger inner screen for multitasking or a more expansive viewing area. Some models support multiple-app layouts or partially folded modes in compatible apps.
Foldables can also be propped open for video calls or to take selfies with their rear cameras. But the flexible inner screen is more vulnerable to scratches than conventional phone glass, and drops remain a concern. A visible crease may remain even as hinge designs make it less noticeable. Two displays can also put pressure on battery life. Consider the added cost against the specific benefit you expect to use.

Best book-style foldable for most people: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8
WIRED describes the Galaxy Z Fold8 as shorter and wider than earlier Fold models, with a 5.5-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display. That shape and three-app split-screen support make it a strong fit for readers who want a large working screen but still expect to use the phone while folded. WIRED also highlights a less obvious crease and easier handling.
The main compromise is camera versatility: WIRED lists a 50-megapixel main and ultrawide camera, while noting that the Fold8 lacks the Ultra model’s 200-megapixel main camera and 3× optical telephoto. Tom’s Guide also notes there is no telephoto lens and that the IP48 rating does not offer full dust resistance. The phone uses a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and has a 4,800-mAh silicon-carbon battery, according to WIRED’s guide.
Battery results depend on how they are measured. WIRED reports about five to six hours of screen-on time in its use. In Tom’s Guide’s separate 5G web-surfing battery test, the Fold8 lasted 12 hours 19 minutes; Tom’s Guide’s charging test reached 70% in 30 minutes. Those test results are not a promise of everyday battery life or charging speed for every user.

Best for dust-and-water resistance and Qi2: Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold
WIRED lists an 8-inch inner display, a 6.5-inch outer display, an IP68 rating, Qi2 25W wireless charging and seven years of software updates. Its assessment calls the phone potentially the most durable option among the foldables in its guide. IP68 is a useful distinction against the Fold8’s IP48 rating, but it does not make a flexible inner display immune to scratches or damage.

- Unlocked for freedom to choose your carrier. Compatible with both GSM & CDMA networks. The phone is unlocked to work with all GSM Carriers & CDMA Carriers Including AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint., Etc.
The trade-offs WIRED identifies are greater thickness and weight than Samsung’s foldables, a battery smaller than its predecessor, and cameras that do not match Google’s best despite the “Pro” name. Choose it if dust-and-water resistance and magnetic Qi2 charging matter more to you than carrying the thinnest or lightest device.
Best lower-cost flip: Motorola Razr (2026)
At the $800 price listed by WIRED, the Razr (2026) is a less expensive entry into foldables than the book-style models in this comparison. It pairs a 3.6-inch outer AMOLED display with a 6.9-inch inner AMOLED display. WIRED describes its camera as acceptable in good light and its battery life as good, but reports weaker low-light and high-contrast results and slower performance than the Razr Ultra.
WIRED lists a MediaTek Dimensity 7450X processor, 8 GB of RAM, a 4,800-mAh battery, IP48 protection, three Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates. Motorola’s official US product page also lists 30W wired charging, wireless charging and an external display for tasks such as messages and Maps. Battery-life and protection descriptions from Motorola are manufacturer claims, not independent test results. Confirm the update terms and specifications for the exact regional version you plan to buy.

The publication highlights the design, battery life and stylus support, but also notes Moto AI limitations, bugs and a limited selection of accessories.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to compare foldables before buying
Check the displays you will actually use
For a flip, assess whether the outer screen can handle your quick tasks and whether the folded size is comfortable for your pocket. For a book-style phone, compare the open-screen dimensions and supported multitasking features. A large inner panel is useful only if you plan to use it.
Compare durability without treating ratings as guarantees
Check both dust and water protection, hinge design and the manufacturer’s care guidance. An IP rating describes a device’s resistance under defined conditions; it does not erase the flexible screen’s greater scratch vulnerability or guarantee survival after a drop. Crease visibility also differs by model and can remain part of the experience.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSeparate battery tests from battery claims
Use reviewer battery results only as comparisons under the named publication’s test conditions. They do not directly predict your screen time, which varies with brightness, reception, apps and how often you use the inner screen. Keep manufacturer capacity and battery-life claims distinct from independent test measurements.

- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[4]

- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
Match the camera system to your needs
Look beyond megapixel counts: check for an optical telephoto lens if zoom matters, and consider the cited low-light performance. If you expect to use the inner screen’s camera for calls or selfies, check whether its placement and quality suit your use.
Verify software support and local details
Compare operating-system upgrades and security-update periods separately; they are not interchangeable promises. Before ordering, confirm the exact model name, storage, price, stock, carrier compatibility and regional specifications. Published prices in this guide can change.
Are foldable phones worth it?
They can be worth the premium if the compact folded shape of a flip or the expanded screen of a book-style phone solves a problem you have every day. If you mainly want a conventional phone for calls, messages and photos, the flexible screen, hinge and higher cost may bring little practical benefit. Which? Mobile Phones expert Adam Speight cautions that foldables trade a steep premium and greater fragility for the convenience of a compact fold or wider inner display.
Why reviews do not name one universal winner
Rankings reflect different priorities. WIRED’s September 2026 guide features the Galaxy Z Fold8 as its best folding phone, while Android Central gives the Galaxy Z Flip8 its “best for most people” distinction and separately recommends book-style models to readers who prefer larger screens. Those judgments are not directly contradictory: they answer different questions about form factor and intended use.
