Age of Wonders 4 is the best-supported pick here if you want a fantasy setting and broad strategic play. But it should be treated as a fantasy strategy alternative—not assumed to be a Paradox-style, continuous-time grand-strategy game. If continuous real-time realm management matters more than fantasy, Knights of Honor II: Sovereign is a useful comparison, though its setting is historical Europe.

What makes a strategy game feel Paradox-like?

“Paradox-style” can mean more than a large map. It may refer to a continuous real-time campaign you can pause, long-term rule over a dynasty or state, and interlocking political and economic decisions. Those systems are not interchangeable with fantasy setting or tactical battles.

Paradox’s Crusader Kings page highlights dynasties, vassals, laws, taxes, courtiers and nobles, alongside real-time grand strategy. For a nation-scale reference point, the Steam listing for Europa Universalis V emphasizes diplomacy, economics, military systems, domestic politics and societal change. Europa Universalis V was released on November 4, 2025, according to that Steam listing.

Use those reference points to decide what you want to carry into a fantasy game: ruler-level decisions and internal politics, national-scale economics, continuous campaign pacing, or simply a large fantasy realm to guide.

Best supported fantasy pick: Age of Wonders 4

Paradox Interactive describes Age of Wonders 4 as a “fantasy strategy game,” with Wizard Kings and the Astral Sea among its setting cues. That makes it the clearest fit in this selection if the fantasy world itself is non-negotiable.

There is an important distinction: the official page reviewed establishes the fantasy-strategy framing, but does not establish that its campaign uses Paradox’s continuous-time, pauseable format. Do not choose it on the assumption that it reproduces Crusader Kings’ pacing or political systems. It is best considered when fantasy setting and broad strategy take priority; verify the specific campaign mechanics you care about before buying.

Real-time realm-management comparison: Knights of Honor II

Knights of Honor II: Sovereign is a closer comparison if your priority is real-time rule over a realm. THQ Nordic calls it a “fresh take on medieval real-time grand strategy.” Its official site describes religion, diplomacy, city development, a royal court and RTS battles.

It does not meet the fantasy-setting part of the request: its setting is historical Europe. Think of it as an adjacent option for players who most want continuous real-time realm management, rather than a fantasy substitute for Age of Wonders 4.
