There is no single best fantasy sports app for every player. For free, customizable season-long leagues across several major sports, ESPN is a strong starting point. Yahoo is worth comparing if you want both season-long and daily formats, with optional paid analysis tools. Sleeper stands out for in-app league chat and a mix of league and pick’em formats. Choose based on how you play—not on an unsupported claim that one app is universally best.

How to choose a fantasy sports app

First, separate season-long fantasy leagues from daily contests and pick’em products. Season-long leagues revolve around a draft, roster moves and scoring over a season. Daily play and pick’em products are different formats, with different rules and, in some cases, eligibility requirements. An app that offers both should not be treated as though every feature belongs to the same product.

  • Sport coverage: Check that the app supports your sport and league type.
  • League setup: If you are a commissioner, compare the available custom rules and roster controls.
  • Management tools: Look for the lineup changes, player additions, trades and live scoring you need.
  • Communication: Decide whether in-app chat matters to your league.
  • Cost and eligibility: Separate free league play from paid tools or contests, and check local availability before using a paid product.

The feature descriptions below come from the apps’ own listings and pages. They are useful for identifying what each company advertises, but they do not establish which app has the best interface, most accurate projections, fastest injury updates or most reliable scoring.

Yahoo Fantasy Full-season football, basketball, hockey and baseball, plus daily contests; Fantasy Plus offers advanced tools and insights. Which app fits your priorities?

Choose ESPN for free, configurable season-long leagues

ESPN’s listing describes free leagues in football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and hockey, with tools for setting up leagues, drafting, managing lineups, adding players and making trades. It is a sensible first option if your priority is a traditional league with adjustable rules and live scoring. ESPN’s statement that its games are free is the operator’s own description; it should not be read as a claim that every related product or future integration is free.

Compare Yahoo if you want season-long and daily formats

Yahoo describes full-season leagues in football, basketball, hockey and baseball alongside daily contests. Its optional Fantasy Plus tier is aimed at users seeking additional tools and insights. The $3.33-per-month figure Yahoo advertised on the page accessed in 2026 is based on annual billing, not a month-to-month price; check the current offer and feature bundle before paying.

Consider Sleeper for league chat and format variety

Sleeper’s listing emphasizes in-app chat, league play and live scores, as well as pick’em and survivor pools. Those features make it worth comparing when communication and multiple formats matter. Keep its paid picks separate from its season-long fantasy leagues: the listing describes eligibility in only some states, and availability may vary by location and product.

Treat CBS as a shortlist candidate, not a verified feature match

Apple’s editorial selection identifies CBS Sports Fantasy as an option for fantasy football, but the source available here does not provide enough primary product detail to compare its commissioner tools, sport coverage or pricing fairly with ESPN, Yahoo and Sleeper. Check CBS’s current product information before choosing it.

Paid contests and announced integrations are separate considerations

ESPN Fan Support’s page, updated November 30, 2025, said a full DraftKings integration rollout was expected in 2026 and named sportsbook, daily fantasy and Pick6 products. That dated expectation is not confirmation that every feature has launched, or that it is available everywhere. It also does not change the distinction between a core season-long league and paid or wagering-related products. Check current ESPN and DraftKings information, as well as local eligibility rules, before relying on any integration.

For an in-person draft

If your league drafts together in person, a physical draft board or kit is an optional complement to an app—not a reason to choose one app over another. ESPN publishes a 2026 Fantasy Football Draft Kit for draft preparation. That does not verify the price, quality or current availability of any physical draft board.
