Baldur’s Gate 3 is the strongest fit if you want both places to discover and story decisions that shape what happens next. For a different balance, choose Elden Ring for large-scale world exploration and combat freedom, Dragon’s Dogma 2 for a party-oriented action RPG across two kingdoms, or Hogwarts Legacy for free roaming in the Wizarding World.
Best PS5 fantasy RPGs for exploration and choice
These four games all have PS5 editions, but they offer different kinds of exploration and agency. PlayStation’s official descriptions support the comparisons below; they are feature descriptions, not independent evaluations or a common measurement of how much choice each game offers.

Choose Baldur’s Gate 3 for story decisions and discovery
PlayStation describes a journey through the Forgotten Realms that includes secrets and vertical exploration, with the story shaped by player choices and relationships. Its official page says, “Your choices play out in the company of a rich cast of characters.” That combination makes it the clearest match here if both exploration and narrative consequences are priorities. Choose Elden Ring for open-world discovery
If the appeal is finding your own way through a large fantasy world, Elden Ring is the strongest alternative. Its official description highlights connected open fields, complex dungeons, and the option to travel on foot or horseback. It also emphasizes choosing how to approach exploration and combat, rather than describing the same breadth of branching story choices as Baldur’s Gate 3. See PlayStation’s Elden Ring page.

Choose Dragon’s Dogma 2 for vocations and companions
Dragon’s Dogma 2 centers on an explorable world that includes Vermund and Battahl. You customize the Arisen and a main Pawn, an AI companion, and select vocations. Choose Hogwarts Legacy for a familiar fantasy setting
Hogwarts Legacy suits players who want to explore recognizable Wizarding World locations. Its official description names Hogwarts, Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest, and the Overland area, alongside character development, relationships, and a decision about the wizarding world’s fate. Choice takes different forms in these games, so the best pick depends on the kind of agency you want:

These distinctions come from the games’ official PlayStation feature descriptions. Those pages do not quantify choice depth on a shared scale, so they support matching games to preferences rather than declaring a measured winner in every category.
