For smog particle pollution, a well-fitting particulate respirator is a better choice than a surgical mask. In the United States, a genuine NIOSH-approved N95 is the clearest-supported option; a KN95 that meets its applicable standard and fits well can also filter particles, but it is not automatically NIOSH-approved. Fit matters: air leaking around the edges bypasses the filter.
How N95, KN95, and surgical masks compare
The labels refer to different kinds of protection and standards. For smog, the useful question is whether the mask filters airborne particles and seals well to your face—not simply which label sounds strongest.

NIOSH’s 95% figure is a filter-class test result, not a promise that a wearer will receive 95% less exposure. Real-world protection depends in part on fit and correct use. EPA separately says NIOSH-approved N95s are more than 95% efficient at removing wildfire smoke particles in the PM2.5 size fraction; that statement concerns particle filtration, not a quantified health outcome. Why fit matters as much as the label
A respirator filters air that passes through its material. If it leaves gaps, some inhaled air can bypass the filter. Choose a model and size that covers your nose and fits under your chin; facial hair where the seal meets the face can create leaks.

- Follow the package instructions for a seal check every time you put it on.
- If you feel air leaking around the edges, try a different size or style.
- A user seal check is not the same as formal fit testing. In workplace respiratory-protection programs, supervised fit testing is used to verify fit. NIOSH describes respirator fit testing.

What particulate masks can—and cannot—do
N95 and KN95 respirators filter particles; they do not filter harmful gases or vapors and do not supply oxygen. Because “smog” can describe a mixture of pollutants, a particulate respirator can reduce exposure to the particle component but does not remove every outdoor air hazard. CDC’s community respirator guidance explains this limitation.

How to reduce exposure when air quality is poor
A mask is only one measure. When particle pollution or smoke is high, EPA advises spending less time outdoors and reducing activity. If you must be outside in smoky conditions, EPA says an N95 reduces exposure to fine particles when it fits snugly without gaps. Use indoor air-cleaning measures and follow local air-quality advisories as well. EPA’s outdoor strategies and broader smoke-exposure guidance cover these steps.

How to check an N95 before buying
- Look for NIOSH and N95 markings on the respirator, along with its testing and certification number. A product listing that says “N95” alone does not establish NIOSH approval.
- Choose a model and size that seals comfortably to your face. A genuine approved respirator that leaks is not a good fit for you.
- Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for putting it on, checking the seal, and replacing it.
No specific brand or model is ranked here: product authenticity, fit, comfort, and availability vary, and a label alone cannot establish how a particular respirator will work for an individual wearer.

When to replace a disposable N95
Replace it if it becomes wet, dirty, or damaged, or if stretched straps keep it from fitting snugly. Do not wash it or put it in an oven or microwave to sterilize it. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for that product. CDC’s N95 use guidance provides these care instructions.
