For most outdoor wood-to-wood joints that will face weather but not constant immersion or structural loads, Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue is a sound choice: its manufacturer says it is intended for interior and exterior use and passes ANSI/HPVA Type I water-resistance. Gorilla Wood Glue Ultimate is another option with manufacturer-listed outdoor use and the same Type I classification. Neither classification makes a glue suitable for every marine or load-bearing job, and the available manufacturer specifications do not establish a universal winner in independent testing.

Which exterior wood glue should you choose?

Choose an adhesive for the joint and its exposure, not just the word “waterproof” on a label. For ordinary outdoor woodworking, Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue is a defensible lead option; Gorilla Wood Glue Ultimate is a comparable manufacturer-backed alternative. Both manufacturers say their products pass ANSI/HPVA Type I water-resistance and list outdoor applications (Titebond III product specifications; Gorilla Wood Glue Ultimate specifications).

These claims address water resistance under a specified test, not suitability for permanent submersion, below-waterline use, or structural and load-bearing joints. Both manufacturers exclude those uses. For a joint where failure could cause injury or property damage, use a project-specific engineered adhesive or fastener specification rather than choosing by consumer glue rating alone.

What Type I water resistance does—and does not—tell you

ANSI/HPVA Type I is a water-resistance classification, not a blanket guarantee for every outdoor environment. Titebond describes Type I as more stringent than Type II. In its explanation of the tests, Type I specimens made from bonded birch laminates undergo two four-hour boils, an oven-drying stage at 145°F for 20 hours, then a second four-hour boil before wet shear testing, with strength and wood-failure requirements. Its described Type II procedure uses repeated four-hour soaking and oven-drying cycles at 120°F for 19 hours, with a no-delamination requirement (Titebond explanation of Type I and Type II testing).

Those are Titebond’s descriptions of the specification tests. They help explain the classification, but do not mean a Type I product is rated for continuous immersion, below-waterline service, or every marine application.

When Titebond III is the better fit

Titebond describes Titebond III as a one-part, water-cleanup glue for interior and exterior woodworking. Its stated open assembly time is 8–10 minutes at 70°F and 50% relative humidity, with a total assembly time of 20–25 minutes. Apply enough clamping pressure to bring the joint tightly together; the product guidance gives general pressure ranges according to wood hardness. The product page says wet glue can be wiped with a damp cloth, while dried excess should be scraped and sanded.

That combination makes it a practical candidate for typical outdoor woodworking joints when the project stays within the manufacturer’s exclusions. Titebond says application should be above 47°F and also advises that the temperature, glue, and materials be above 45°F. Since those figures appear as distinct guidance on its product page, follow the current label and avoid applying the glue near or below its stated limits.

When Gorilla Wood Glue Ultimate is a reasonable alternative

Gorilla lists Wood Glue Ultimate for outdoor use and says it passes ANSI/HPVA Type I water-resistance. Its specifications list up to 15 minutes of working time, 20–30 minutes of clamp time, a 24-hour full cure, and an application temperature of at least 50°F. Gorilla also says the cured glue does not expand, does not fill gaps, and dries a natural color.

Because it does not fill gaps, make the wood joint fit properly rather than relying on glue to bridge a poor fit. Treat the listed timing as manufacturer guidance, not as directly comparable proof that it affords more working time than Titebond under the same conditions.

How to get a dependable outdoor wood joint

  1. Check the job first. Confirm that the joint is ordinary exterior woodworking, not structural or load-bearing, continuously submerged, or below the waterline. If it is, select an adhesive or fastening system specified for that use.
  2. Read the current product label. Confirm the minimum application temperature and timing for the glue, the wood, and the work area. Temperature limits matter when working outdoors or with cold materials.
  3. Dry-fit the parts. Align the pieces before applying glue and verify that the joint closes tightly. Gorilla specifically says its product does not fill gaps.
  4. Apply and clamp according to the label. Spread enough glue to make the joint, bring the surfaces tightly together, and keep them clamped for the manufacturer’s stated period. A brush or roller spreader can help distribute Titebond III.
  5. Allow the specified cure before service. Gorilla lists a 24-hour full cure. Do not treat clamp time as full cure; use the product’s current instructions for the adhesive you choose.
  6. Clean up appropriately. Titebond says to wipe wet excess with a damp cloth and scrape and sand dried excess. Follow the chosen product’s label for cleanup.

Bottom line for outdoor projects

For a typical exterior wood joint, Titebond III is a well-supported starting choice, while Gorilla Wood Glue Ultimate is a comparable Type I outdoor-use alternative. Decide between them based on the current label, working conditions, and joint fit—not by treating the manufacturers’ different timing figures as a head-to-head ranking. For immersion, below-waterline, or structural work, neither product is specified for the job.
