There is no single best eSIM plan for everyone in Australia. Choose by checking reception where you will use your phone, the plan’s ongoing price after any promotion, its data expiry and speed cap, and whether it includes the calls and texts you need. The examples below are dated 4 October 2026; offers can change, so confirm the provider’s current plan details and Critical Information Summary before buying.
How to choose an Australian eSIM plan
An eSIM is a way to install and activate a mobile service; it does not create a separate network. Your reception still depends on the provider’s network access, your location, and a compatible device. The ACCC puts it plainly: “The right plan for you will depend on your situation and the way you use your phone.” ACCC guidance on choosing a mobile service.
- Check coverage where it matters. Look up your home, workplace, commute, and travel route on the provider’s coverage map. A national coverage claim cannot guarantee service in a particular place. Optus says 5G access depends on availability, location, and a compatible device.
- Compare the regular price, not just the offer. Record the introductory price, how long it lasts, eligibility rules, activation deadline, and ongoing recharge price. A short promotion can make a plan look cheaper than it is over a longer stay.
- Match data and validity to your use. Check whether the allowance is a bonus, how long it lasts, whether unused data rolls over or is banked, and what happens when it runs out. A 7-day plan may suit a short visit better than a cheaper-looking plan with a much longer expiry.
- Check performance terms. 4G or 5G access does not promise a particular speed. Where a cap is stated, include it in your comparison alongside location and device conditions.
- Confirm calls, texts, and eligibility. Check whether the plan includes an Australian number, national calls and SMS, international use if needed, and number retention. Also confirm that your phone is compatible and unlocked and that you qualify for any new-customer or eSIM-only offer.
The ACCC says a Critical Information Summary can help identify inclusions such as calls and SMS, data, termination fees, and contract length. Most mobile plans include unlimited national calls and SMS, but prepaid exceptions exist; check the summary for the specific plan.

These examples were checked on 4 October 2026, but the quoted third-party plan listings and live carrier offers may change. They are not the result of independent coverage, speed, activation, or customer-service tests. “Telstra network,” “Optus network,” or “Vodafone network” can mean wholesale access through another provider, rather than a plan sold directly by that network operator.

| Plan example | Network and access | Price and data reported | Terms and caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Telstra Prepaid | Telstra | Telstra’s live page showed a $15, 7-day plan with 5GB during a bonus period and a $44, 28-day plan with 50GB during a stated bonus period. | Bonus data has activation and recharge deadlines. Telstra listed eSIM availability for most plans and longer-expiry options. At the time checked, a $54, 28-day plan was offered at $40 for eligible new eSIM activations through 5 October, for up to six recharges; confirm all eligibility and deadline terms on the live page. |
| Optus Prepaid Flex Plus | Optus | Multiple price and data tiers were listed; amounts vary and should be checked on the live page. | Optus supports prepaid eSIM purchase and activation through the My Optus app. Flex Plus provides access to Optus 4G and standard 5G subject to availability, compatible device, and location. |
| Exetel Plus One | Telstra wholesale access | Tom’s Guide listed AU$40/month for 130GB. | The comparison listed an eSIM-only prepaid plan, a 150Mbps speed cap, and data banking up to 1,000GB. These are secondary-source details; verify current availability and terms with Exetel. |
| Spintel | Optus wholesale access | Tom’s Guide listed AU$35/month for 100GB. | The listing stated a 150Mbps cap and a $12 charge per additional GB after the allowance. Verify both details and current availability with Spintel. |
| Pivotel Mobile Swift | Vodafone 4G | Tom’s Guide listed 25GB/month at AU$11.45/month for six months, then AU$22.90/month. | The listing stated that the offer ran through 31 October 2026. This is a secondary-source listing close to its stated end date; confirm with Pivotel before relying on it. |
| TPG prepaid | Vodafone 4G/5G | Tom’s Guide listed 100GB at AU$22.50/month for six months, then AU$45/month. | These are secondary-source figures. Confirm current plan availability, price, and conditions with TPG. |
Telstra’s prepaid offers and rates and Optus’s prepaid eSIM page are the primary places to verify their live terms. Tom’s Guide’s comparison is the source for the Exetel, Spintel, Pivotel, and TPG examples above; it is secondary reporting, not provider confirmation.
Which plan is best for your situation?
For regional or cross-country travel
Start with the network that covers your specific stops and routes, not a broad “best coverage” label. Compare coverage maps for the places you will actually visit, then choose a plan with enough data and an expiry that spans your trip. A plan with wholesale access is not necessarily identical in features or access conditions to a plan sold by the host network.

For the lowest ongoing cost
Ignore the teaser rate until you know what it becomes. For example, Tom’s Guide’s Pivotel listing rises from AU$11.45 to AU$22.90 per month after six months, while its TPG listing rises from AU$22.50 to AU$45 after six months. Those are reported offer terms, not permanent prices; verify them before signing up. Also compare the amount of data, expiry, and any excess-data charges.

For a large data allowance
The reported Exetel and Spintel examples combine substantial allowances with a stated 150Mbps cap. Exetel’s listing also reports data banking up to 1,000GB, while Spintel’s listing reports a per-GB charge after the allowance. Treat these as claims to verify with the provider, and decide whether the cap or excess-data rule suits how you use your phone.

For a short stay
Choose a validity period that covers the visit without paying for a much longer term than you need. Telstra’s listed 7-day prepaid option may fit a brief stay if its current allowance and terms meet your needs; a 28-day plan may be simpler for a month-long trip. Compare total cost for the full trip, including what happens if the plan expires before you leave.
How much data do you need?
The ACCC’s 2024–25 communications market report recorded average monthly data usage of 9GB for retail prepaid customers. That is a market average for that reporting period, not a 2026 measurement or a recommendation for an individual traveller. Your use can vary substantially with video, hotspotting, navigation, and whether you regularly use Wi-Fi. The ACCC also documents that prepaid prices and data allowances changed during that period, so historical figures should not be treated as current offers. ACCC Communications market report 2024–25.

How to activate an eSIM safely
- Check your phone. Confirm that its exact model supports eSIM and is unlocked for the Australian provider you choose.
- Confirm plan terms before paying. Read the current plan page and Critical Information Summary for price after promotions, expiry, data rules, calls and texts, eligibility, and activation deadlines.
- Use the provider’s stated activation route. For Optus prepaid, purchase and activation are available through the My Optus app. Follow the provider’s current instructions for the plan you selected.
- Keep existing service available until the new one works. If you are transferring a number, follow the provider’s porting instructions and do not cancel the old service prematurely.
- Test service at the places you need it. Check calls, texts, and data after activation, then contact the provider if the eSIM does not install or the service does not connect.
Optus describes its prepaid eSIM as an app-based installation and activation option; it does not remove the coverage, device, or location qualifications that apply to its network.
