The best educational toys for toddlers are simple, safe toys that invite them to explore, build, pretend, move, and play with you. Blocks, simple puzzles, pretend-play objects, washable art supplies, books, and balls are useful categories—not guaranteed lessons or shortcuts to developmental milestones. Choose for your child’s abilities and interests as well as the age guidance on the package.

What makes a toy educational for a toddler?

“Educational” is most useful as a description of the play a toy invites, not proof that it will accelerate development or teach a particular milestone. A toy can give a toddler opportunities to manipulate objects, solve simple problems, use language, imagine stories, make marks, or move. What the child does with it—and whether an adult joins in—matters more than a marketing label.

The American Academy of Pediatrics puts interaction at the center: “The most educational toy is one that fosters interactions between caregivers and children in supportive, unconditional play.” Its clinical report, Selecting Appropriate Toys for Young Children in the Digital Era, also discusses traditional toys such as blocks as ways to invite language, imagination, manipulation, and movement. A certain toy is not necessary for a child to reach the next developmental milestone.

Digital or electronic features do not by themselves make a toy more educational. The AAP advises that digital toys should not replace real, face-to-face play. If choosing an electronic toy, consider whether it still leaves room for the child and caregiver to interact rather than simply watch or press buttons.

Good toy categories for toddlers

These categories are starting points, not a checklist every toddler must be ready for. NAEYC’s suggestions vary by age and stage; use the child’s current abilities and interests to decide what fits.

Toy type Play it can invite What to check
Blocks and construction toys Building, handling pieces, and trying out solutions Choose a suitable age range and piece size; inspect for damaged or loose pieces. NAEYC names blocks for both one- and two-year-olds.
Puzzles and sorting toys Matching, handling, and problem-solving Choose an appropriate difficulty and piece size. NAEYC suggests wood puzzles with 4 to 12 pieces for two-year-olds; that is a category suggestion, not a readiness guarantee.
Pretend-play toys Imitation, stories, language, and imagination Consider familiar, sturdy objects such as toy phones, dolls, animals, or play food; follow product instructions and supervise as needed.
Art materials Creative expression and practice handling drawing tools For toddlers, look for large, washable, non-toxic crayons or markers and large paper. Supervise use.
Balls and movement toys Movement and physical play Consider the ball’s size, the play setting, and supervision. Keep small balls away from children under three.
Books Looking at pictures, sharing words, and spending time together For young toddlers, board books are among NAEYC’s suggestions for one-year-olds.

What to offer at one and two years old

For one-year-olds

NAEYC suggests simple, versatile options such as board books, large paper with washable drawing materials, pretend-play objects such as toy phones or dolls, blocks, puzzles, large pegboards, and balls. Choose items that suit the child’s present abilities, and stay close while they explore.

How to choose for your child

  1. Start with the child, not a promise on the box. Notice what they can comfortably handle and what currently interests them. NAEYC and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) both recommend considering a child’s developmental stage, abilities, and interests.
  2. Use the package age guidance as a safety and usability cue. It is important, but it is not a precise measure of an individual child’s readiness. CPSC explains that age descriptions are approximate and that children develop at different rates.
  3. Pick an engaging level of challenge. A toy should offer something the child can explore without requiring skills they do not yet have. For puzzles and construction toys in particular, consider both the task and the size of the pieces.
  4. Look for room to play together. A book to look through, blocks to build with, or pretend objects to turn into a story can give a caregiver openings to talk, respond, and follow the child’s lead.
  5. Check safety before and during play. Follow package guidance and product instructions, inspect toys for wear, and check current recall information. For children under three, avoid small parts and small balls that could pose choking hazards; also take care with button batteries and high-powered magnets.

Are educational toys worth it?

A toy may be worthwhile when it is safe, appropriate for the child, and enjoyable to explore together. The label “educational” alone does not establish a toy’s value, and no particular toy is required for a toddler to reach a milestone. Simple traditional toys can support varied kinds of play without needing electronic features or claims about teaching a specific skill.
