You can get clear calls without buying flagship earbuds. For 2026, RTINGS and SoundGuys both name the Sony WF-1000XM6 their overall pick, while RTINGS also recommends mid-range and budget options. The right choice depends on whether you mostly call from a quiet room, a noisy commute, or outdoors in wind. Current reviews support a range of affordable choices; they do not establish that call-focused earbuds are at their lowest prices ever.
Which earbuds have the best call quality?
The Sony WF-1000XM6 is the strongest overall pick in the current guides from RTINGS and SoundGuys. RTINGS says it has tested more than 370 pairs of earbuds and in-ear headphones; that is the publication’s own testing count, not an independently audited statistic. Its guide describes the Sony’s voice pickup as clear in moderately busy settings, but warns that very loud sounds such as passing trains can trigger noise gating and make speech harder to understand.
That distinction matters: a microphone that sounds good in a quiet room may not perform as well beside traffic or in wind. SoundGuys publishes microphone samples recorded in varied conditions and describes a custom test fixture that simulates bone-vibration transmission. Its guide added the Sony as its overall pick on February 12, 2026. These methods offer useful context, but rankings from different publications are not a controlled head-to-head test of every model.
SoundGuys reports that Sony’s AI noise rejection was trained on 500 million voice samples, attributing that figure to Sony. It also reports 88% average noise reduction for the earbuds’ active noise cancellation. That percentage concerns noise reduction for the wearer; it does not measure how well the microphone cleans up your outgoing call audio.

Are good call earbuds cheaper than ever?
There are credible options across budget and mid-range tiers, so strong call quality is not limited to flagship models. But “cheaper than ever” is a historical claim the available evidence cannot confirm: current recommendations and a few current prices do not provide a consistent price history for call-focused earbuds. TechRadar describes the earbud market as more affordable and competitive and notes price reductions for the Nothing Ear (a), but that does not establish a category-wide all-time low. Its current overview is at TechRadar.

How to choose earbuds for calls
- Match the test conditions to your routine. For a quiet home office, clear and natural speech may matter most. For commutes or shared spaces, look for evidence about steady background noise and sudden loud sounds; the Sony, for example, may struggle with very loud events.
- Look for wind samples or specific wind findings. The CMF Buds 2A review reports some difficulty with wind buffeting. Scarbir says its call tests include outdoor calls near wind and a traffic intersection, as well as a simulated office with voices and sudden background noise. Its stated count is more than 541 wireless earbuds under $100 reviewed and ranked in its October 2026 guide; this is the author’s test count, not a market-wide statistic.
- Check call endurance, not just the charging-case headline. RTINGS notes under-five-hour battery life for the OnePlus Buds 4 with ANC on. If you regularly take long meetings, check the model’s battery performance under the settings you plan to use.
- Test fit while speaking. A loose earbud can be distracting during a call. RTINGS specifically notes less secure fit for the Soundcore P31i while talking or chewing.
- Confirm phone-and-computer switching. The OnePlus Buds 4 may have inconsistent multipoint behavior with laptops, according to RTINGS. If you move between a phone and a work computer, check that specific workflow rather than assuming switching will be seamless.
- Listen to microphone recordings where available. Music quality and noise cancellation for your own listening do not prove that your voice will sound clear to someone else. Compare samples in conditions resembling your calls.
