For most still photographers shopping for a DSLR in 2026, the Nikon D850 is a strong all-round choice if you want a high-resolution full-frame camera and can find one at a price and condition you trust. It is not the right answer for everyone: the Nikon D3500 is a simpler used learning body, the Canon EOS 90D suits buyers seeking an enthusiast APS-C Canon, and the Nikon D500 is a specialist option for action. Your existing lenses, intended subjects and local stock may matter more than any single “best” label.

The DSLR market is smaller but still active. Canon, Nikon and Pentax remain the practical system choices in the current buying landscape, while many models are now easier to find used or renewed than new. Recommendations below reflect the 2026 guide by Amateur Photographer, with other guide perspectives attributed where they differ. Availability and prices change by country and retailer, so check local listings before deciding.

Which DSLR should you buy in 2026?

Start with your lens system, then choose the camera that fits your subjects and budget. If you have no DSLR lenses yet and want a high-resolution full-frame body for varied still photography, the Nikon D850 is the clearest general-purpose pick in Amateur Photographer’s September 2026 guide. If you already own Canon EF or EF-S lenses, a Canon body may be the more useful purchase even if another camera wins a guide’s overall category.

Here is the shortlist and the role each camera is meant to fill:

#1 Best Overall
Canon EOS Rebel T7 DSLR Camera EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 is II Lens Kit
  • 24.1 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor with is 100–6400 (H: 12800)
  • Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC technology
  • 9-Point AF system and AI Servo AF
  • Optical Viewfinder with approx 95% viewing coverage
  • Use the EOS Utility Webcam Beta Software (Mac and Windows) to turn your compatible Canon camera into a high-quality webcam. Compatible Lenses- Canon EF Lenses (including EF-S lenses, excluding EF-M lenses)
Use Camera What to know
Best overall Nikon D850 Full-frame, 45.7MP and an optical viewfinder; suited to buyers prioritizing resolution and broad still-photography use. Nikon USA listed it for sale when checked, but price and stock are not stable.
Beginner Nikon D3500 A straightforward used or renewed learning body. Amateur Photographer lists it as renewed; TechRadar describes it as discontinued but available second-hand.
Lightweight Canon EOS 250D / Rebel SL3 Entry-level Canon EF-S system option and Amateur Photographer’s lightweight pick.
Travel Canon EOS 850D / Rebel T8i Amateur Photographer’s travel choice; the guide lists renewed availability rather than establishing general new stock.
Enthusiast APS-C Canon EOS 90D Used or renewed Canon EF/EF-S option for buyers who want an enthusiast body; check local condition and stock.
Sports and action Nikon D500 A specialist used-body choice, not a claim that Nikon still manufactures it.
Value full frame Pentax K-1 Mark II Full-frame option for buyers specifically interested in the Pentax K system.
Full-frame enthusiast Nikon D780 Nikon USA lists it; Nikon specifies a 24.5MP full-frame sensor. It is an alternative to the higher-resolution D850 for buyers who prefer a different feature balance.
Professional Canon EOS 5D Mark IV Amateur Photographer’s professional pick, but its March 2026 update says Canon officially discontinued it. Some retailer stock may remain.
Cheap used full frame Canon EOS 5D Mark III An older used option with Full HD video; check shutter count carefully and confirm the seller’s return and service terms.

These categories are useful starting points, not a universal ranking. The D850’s 45.7MP resolution, for example, does not by itself make it the best camera for fast action, and a lower-priced body may be the better purchase if it leaves room in the budget for a suitable lens.

What makes the Nikon D850 the overall pick—and who should choose another camera?

Amateur Photographer named the Nikon D850 its best overall DSLR in its guide published 24 September 2026. Its full-frame 45.7MP sensor and optical viewfinder make it appealing to photographers who want detail for cropping or large prints alongside a versatile still-photography platform. Nikon’s USA store listed the camera when checked, and Nikon’s lineup page includes it; neither fact guarantees local stock or a consistent price.

Consider the D780 instead if you want a Nikon full-frame DSLR with a 24.5MP sensor and do not need the D850’s higher resolution. Choose the D3500 if learning on an affordable used body is the priority, or look at the D500 if action photography is the goal and you are comfortable buying used. Existing Nikon F lenses can also make a Nikon body the practical choice, though lens compatibility depends on the specific body and lens.

Other publications make different selections because they weigh price, availability and features differently. RTINGS’ 2026 guide says the Canon EOS Rebel T7, also known as the EOS 2000D, remains one of the most affordable new DSLRs, while noting its basic build, lack of weather sealing and fixed screen. RTINGS also praises the Pentax K-3 Mark III’s APS-C image quality but cautions about autofocus reliability versus the Canon EOS 90D and its premium price. These are RTINGS’ assessments, not a universal verdict.

How to choose between Canon, Nikon and Pentax

A DSLR body is part of a system. Compare the cost and compatibility of the lenses you will actually use, not just the camera body. Canon EF and EF-S, Nikon F and Pentax K lenses are distinct mounts; they are not interchangeable without adapters, and adapter support does not guarantee full functionality with every body-and-lens pair.

Canon EF and EF-S

Choose Canon if you already own compatible EF or EF-S lenses or want one of the Canon bodies in this shortlist. The EOS 250D / Rebel SL3 is the lightweight entry-level option; the EOS 90D is the enthusiast APS-C pick; the EOS 850D / Rebel T8i is the travel choice. The 5D Mark IV is full frame but officially discontinued according to Amateur Photographer’s March 2026 update, so treat new listings as remaining retailer stock rather than a dependable supply.

Nikon F

Nikon covers several distinct needs here: the D3500 for a used learning body, the D500 for action, the D780 for a full-frame enthusiast balance, and the D850 for high-resolution general-purpose stills. Nikon’s lineup page lists the D6, D850, D780, D500, D7500 and D3500 with format and resolution, but a lineup listing is not proof that each model is available new in every country.

Pentax K

The K-1 Mark II is the shortlist’s full-frame value-oriented option, while the K-3 Mark III is an APS-C alternative mentioned by RTINGS. Both make most sense when you are intentionally choosing into the Pentax K system; account for compatible lenses and local service and resale options rather than comparing body specifications alone.

Are DSLRs still relevant in 2026?

They can be, especially if you want an optical viewfinder, a DSLR-style grip and handling, or already own compatible lenses. The market is contracting: TechRadar reports that many leading manufacturers have stopped developing DSLRs, while the used market remains healthy. “Healthy” does not mean every model is easy to find or that every used listing is a good buy.

Some bodies remain listed by manufacturers or appear in retailer inventories, while others are chiefly used or renewed. For example, Nikon USA listed the D780 and D850 when checked on 7 October 2026. Digital Camera World reported on 18 July 2026 that Canon’s online store offered the EOS-1D X Mark III, EOS 5D Mark IV and EOS 2000D at that time. These are dated, region-specific snapshots, not a global inventory or a promise of current stock.

The market figures also need careful interpretation. Digital Camera World reported 690,911 DSLR units shipped worldwide in 2025, citing CIPA, and reported Canon’s estimate of 600,000–620,000 DSLR units sold in 2025. These are 2025 figures reported in 2026, not 2026 sales. The same article says Canon listed 27 DSLR lenses in its US store at the time it was accessed. In its CP+ 2026 interview, Digital Camera World attributed this statement to an executive identified as Tokura: “So as long as there are still customers for DSLRs, we would like to continue to offer our products.” That signals continued customer demand, not a guarantee that a particular camera or lens will remain available.

How to buy a used or renewed DSLR safely

Used and renewed listings can make discontinued cameras attainable, but a low body price is only part of the cost. A compatible lens, working battery and charger, suitable memory card, and possible servicing can change the value of a bundle. Before paying, check:

  • Seller and condition: Look for a reputable seller, a clear condition grade and detailed photos of the body, mount, screen and controls.
  • Shutter count: Ask for the count when available, particularly for older bodies such as the Canon EOS 5D Mark III. A count is useful context, not a complete assessment of wear.
  • Return and warranty terms: Confirm the return window and any warranty in writing. Do not assume that “renewed” means the same thing at every retailer.
  • Battery and accessories: Check whether the battery holds charge and whether the listing includes the charger and other essentials.
  • Lens inclusion and compatibility: Verify exactly which lens is included and that it is compatible with the body for the functions you need.
  • Working condition: If possible, test autofocus, exposure, viewfinder, buttons, card slots, ports and screen before the return period ends.
  • Total price: Compare the complete kit and its condition rather than choosing solely on the body’s sticker price.

For action, wildlife or sports, pay particular attention to autofocus performance and handling; a high-resolution sensor is not a substitute for focusing capability. For travel, confirm the body’s weight and screen configuration suit your use. For video, check the specific model: the 5D Mark III is an older camera limited to Full HD video, so it is a poor fit if modern video features are central to the purchase.

A quick decision path

  1. Identify your mount: If you own Canon EF/EF-S, Nikon F or Pentax K lenses, start with compatible bodies and verify the exact lens-body pairing.
  2. Choose the sensor format and resolution: Consider full frame if it suits your lens plans and work; prioritize high resolution when cropping or large prints matter, while remembering that larger files can require more storage and processing.
  3. Match the camera to your subject: Consider the D500 for action-oriented Nikon use, the D850 for resolution-focused stills, and the listed Canon or Pentax options for their respective systems and roles.
  4. Decide whether new matters: Check current local manufacturer and retailer listings. If buying used or renewed, apply the condition, shutter count, return, battery and lens checks above.
  5. Price the complete setup: Include the lens, battery, charger, memory card and any likely service cost before comparing deals.
