There is no single best drugstore anti-aging serum. The right one depends on your main concern, your skin type, how well your skin tolerates active ingredients, and whether you will use it consistently for months. The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) says sunscreen and moisturizer are the most effective anti-aging products to buy, and treats a serum as an optional, targeted treatment layered on top of that base. This guide explains how to pick a retinol serum, what the two widely sold options are actually marketed for, and how to introduce one without irritating your skin.
What a serum can and cannot do
Anti-aging products have modest effects. AAD states plainly that you cannot get the results of a facelift from a cream, and no single product addresses every sign of aging. A serum is most useful when you have one clear target, such as fine lines or uneven tone, and you are willing to treat it as a long-term routine step rather than a quick fix.
Build the base first: sunscreen and moisturizer
Sun exposure drives much of the visible aging that people buy serums for, so protection comes before any active ingredient. AAD recommends a daily broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher as part of anti-aging care. “Broad-spectrum” means the product protects against both UVA and UVB rays. AAD’s sunscreen label guidance states that SPF 30 filters 97% of UVB rays.
- Everyday use: apply sunscreen every morning, including on cloudy days, as the final step of your morning routine before makeup.
- Outdoor time: AAD recommends water resistance and reapplication every two hours.
- Water-resistant labels: these specify 40 or 80 minutes before reapplication when swimming or sweating.
A moisturizer keeps the skin comfortable while you use an active serum, which matters because dryness makes irritation more likely.

Match the serum to your main concern
Choose by the concern you most want to address, not by the price or the packaging. The table below reflects what AAD says about retinoids and what the two product pages say about their own purpose.
| Main concern | What the cited guidance says | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Mild fine lines and wrinkles | AAD says retinoids can be an option for mild fine lines and wrinkles. | Start with the least-intense formula available and build up slowly. |
| Uneven tone, pigmentation, texture | AAD describes retinol, an over-the-counter retinoid, as used for these concerns. | Irritation can itself leave dark marks, particularly in darker skin tones, so back off if your skin becomes irritated. |
| Post-acne marks, pores, skin texture | CeraVe markets its Resurfacing Retinol Serum for these concerns. This is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent comparison. | Check the package for the current ingredient list and directions. |
| Dry, allergy-prone, red, or inflamed skin | AAD advises people with these skin conditions to seek individualized advice before using retinoids. | Talk with a dermatologist before starting rather than testing on your own. |
Retinol: how it works and how to use it safely
AAD describes retinoids as vitamin A-based products. Retinol is the type sold over the counter, and it is used for mild concerns such as uneven tone, pigmentation, and texture. For these products, AAD dermatologist advice is to use the least-intense formula available, start every other night, and build up gradually to limit irritation. Tina Alster, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and clinical professor of dermatology at Georgetown University Medical Center, makes the same point in AAD’s retinoid guidance: “If they don’t do that, they end up irritating their skin.”

Why the product name does not tell you the strength
AAD notes there is no standard requirement that over-the-counter product labels disclose a retinol percentage. A product called “extra strength” or a higher-priced bottle does not reliably signal a stronger formula. If you cannot find the percentage on the label, judge by the gentleness of the directions and by how your skin responds, not by the name.

Two drugstore retinol serums compared
Both products below are widely sold, and each manufacturer describes its own purpose. Neither cited page establishes that one outperforms the other, so this comparison is about marketed purpose and buying details, not a verdict on results.
| Attribute | Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Serum | CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum |
|---|---|---|
| Marketed purpose | Fine lines and wrinkles, per Neutrogena’s product page | Appearance of post-acne marks, pores, and skin texture, per CeraVe’s product page |
| Retinol in ingredient list | Yes, listed on the product page | Not confirmed on the product page; the page directs you to the package for the current ingredient list |
| Retailers named on manufacturer page | Amazon, Walmart, and CVS | Not stated on the cited page |
| Current price | Not stated on the cited page; prices change, so check the retailer | Not stated on the cited page; prices change, so check the retailer |
| Independent head-to-head data | None on the cited page | None on the cited page |
If your main concern is fine lines and wrinkles, the Neutrogena product matches its stated purpose more directly. If your concern is post-acne marks or pore appearance, the CeraVe product is the one marketed for that. Read the current package before buying either, because formulas can differ by market and change over time.

Introducing a new serum
AAD recommends a slow, one-variable introduction. Follow these steps:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Start with one new product and keep your other products the same for the trial period.
- Choose the least-intense formula available if you are starting a retinoid, and follow the directions on the label.
- Patch test by applying a small amount to the inner forearm twice daily for four to five days before using it on your face.
- Begin every other night, and build up gradually only if your skin tolerates the previous stage.
- Keep wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning throughout the trial.
- Judge the results only after you have used it consistently. Many products take at least six weeks, and sometimes up to three months, to show results.
When to stop or seek advice
- Stinging or burning: stop using the product unless a dermatologist has advised otherwise.
- Pregnancy: do not use retinoids.
- Dry, allergy-prone, red, or inflamed skin: get individualized advice before starting.
- Irritation with darker skin tones: irritation can cause dark marks, so reduce use or pause the product when your skin becomes irritated.
Skin that is irritated is not responding to the serum in a useful way. Going back to every other night, or to a gentler formula, is a better response than pushing through discomfort.
