There is no single best sound driver for every laptop. The right driver is the one that matches your exact laptop model, Windows version, and audio hardware. For most Windows laptops, start with Windows Update; if that does not resolve the problem, use Device Manager and then check the laptop maker’s official support page for a model-specific package.
The “2023” in the original title is historical, not a recommendation to install a 2023 driver. Driver packages vary by device and change over time. Microsoft’s current guidance is to check Windows Update first and use the PC manufacturer’s support site for the matching model when needed: Microsoft’s Windows audio-driver guidance.
How to choose the right laptop audio driver
Before downloading a driver, identify your laptop manufacturer, exact model, Windows version, and audio device. Use the support page for that laptop model and select a package listed for your Windows version. A driver labeled “Realtek,” “Intel,” or simply “audio” is not automatically the right choice: laptop makers may provide model-specific packages and supporting components.
Use this order when comparing available options:
- Match: Does the package explicitly support your laptop model and Windows version?
- Source: Is it offered through Windows Update, the laptop manufacturer, or as a generic Windows fallback?
- Timing: Did the sound problem begin after a Windows update or driver installation?
- Hardware: Does the laptop maker specify a particular audio vendor or additional components for your device?
For example, ASUS tells affected notebook users to compare the audio hardware identifier and supported driver vendor, then obtain the matching driver from ASUS’s official site. That is model-specific guidance, not evidence that ASUS or any audio vendor is best for all laptops: ASUS audio-driver guidance.

Update the driver in the recommended order
1. Check Windows Update
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install available updates.
- Restart the laptop and test sound.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the first route for audio-driver updates. If no suitable update appears or the issue remains, continue with Device Manager.
2. Search with Device Manager
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio device and select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers, follow any prompts, and restart if a driver is installed.
Windows may say that the best driver is already installed even when the laptop maker has a newer package. If the sound problem persists, check the maker’s support page for the exact model and operating system rather than assuming Device Manager found every available version.

3. Install the laptop maker’s package
Search the manufacturer’s official support site using the exact laptop model, then download the matching audio driver for your Windows version. This route is especially relevant if the problem began after a Windows upgrade or a generic driver did not help. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and restart the laptop afterward.

What to do if sound still does not work
Use Windows’ audio recovery steps
On Windows 11, start with the audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app. If the problem continues, Microsoft documents uninstalling the audio device in Device Manager and restarting so Windows can reinstall its driver. A generic Windows audio driver is another documented fallback when other options have not worked; it is not a guaranteed sound-quality upgrade. See Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting steps.

If the problem began after Windows Update
Install any pending updates, restart, and update the audio driver. Microsoft identifies incompatible or partially installed drivers as possible causes of sound problems after an update: Microsoft’s guidance for audio problems in Windows.
Why driver versions do not identify a universal winner
A version number by itself does not show whether a package suits a particular laptop. Microsoft Update Catalog, for example, lists a Realtek High Definition Audio package as version 6.0.9605.1, released 2023-11-14, and a separate Realtek High Definition Audio (SST) package as version 6.0.9614.1, released 2023-12-05. These are distinct catalog entries, not comparative tests or recommendations for an unspecified laptop: Microsoft Update Catalog search results.

Sound processing may also involve audio processing objects (APOs) and system effects in addition to the base driver. Changing the driver alone therefore does not necessarily control every sound feature. Windows 10 support status
Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on 2025-10-14. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Check the laptop maker’s support information for drivers compatible with your particular device and operating system: Microsoft Windows audio guidance.
