For most vertical short-form videos, set the Osmo Pocket 3 to Portrait, choose Normal Video, then record at 3K (9:16), 30fps. It gives you native vertical framing and more resolution than 1080p without making 60fps the default when you do not need it. Use 60fps for fast movement or footage you may slow down in editing; choose 1080p when smaller files or a lighter workflow matter. These are practical camera recommendations, not platform rules.
The camera’s capture settings decide what it records. Your editor’s export settings decide the file you upload. TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube can change their upload specifications, so check each service’s current guidance when exporting rather than treating a camera setting as an upload requirement.
Recommended Pocket 3 settings by type of video
| Use | Starting settings | Why this fits |
|---|---|---|
| Talking clips and everyday short-form | Portrait; Normal Video; 3K (9:16); 30fps | Native vertical framing with more resolution than 1080p. 30fps is a practical general-purpose choice, not an official TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube rule. |
| Walking, active scenes, or fast movement | Portrait; Normal Video; 3K (9:16); 60fps | The Pocket 3 supports vertical 3K at 60fps. The higher capture rate can preserve smoother motion or provide room to slow footage in editing, with greater storage and editing demands. |
| Smaller files or a simpler edit | Portrait; Normal Video; 1080p (9:16); 30fps | 1080 × 1920 is a straightforward portrait format when you do not need 3K capture. |
| Slow-motion insert | Slow Motion mode; choose an available rate and resolution for the shot | DJI lists 4K at 100 or 120fps, 2.7K at 120fps, and 1080p at 120 or 240fps in Slow Motion mode. These are not 4K/120 Normal Video portrait settings. |
| Horizontal master or later reframing | Landscape; Normal Video; 4K up to 60fps | Use this when horizontal framing is the priority. Cropping a horizontal recording to vertical can cut off parts of the scene. |
DJI documents native 9:16 Normal Video at 3K (1728 × 3072), 2.7K (1512 × 2688), and 1080p (1080 × 1920); each is available at 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, or 60fps. Normal Video landscape 4K is 3840 × 2160 at those same frame rates, while portrait Normal Video tops out at 3K. See the Osmo Pocket 3 User Manual (version 1.0, dated October 25, 2023, on DJI’s download page) for the supported modes.
Set vertical orientation before you record
The Pocket 3 can shoot horizontally or vertically, and its screen orientation controls the shooting orientation by default. DJI also documents Landscape, Portrait, and Auto-Rotation options in the camera settings. Select Portrait for a vertical-first shoot, or Auto-Rotation if you want the camera to follow screen orientation. Check the display before the take: DJI says the horizontal or vertical mode locks when recording starts, and you cannot switch orientation during that recording.

Choose resolution and frame rate for the shot
Use 3K at 30fps as the general-purpose starting point
Portrait 3K gives you a higher-resolution capture than 1080p while keeping the frame natively vertical. At 30fps, it suits ordinary speech, demonstrations, and day-to-day clips where you are not specifically seeking extra motion detail or slow-motion flexibility.

Choose 60fps when motion or slowdown calls for it
Set 60fps for movement you want to look smoother or when you may slow a clip during editing. Higher frame rates can require more storage and make editing heavier; they are not automatically better for every scene. If you want a dedicated slow-motion shot, switch to Slow Motion mode and select one of its supported combinations rather than assuming Normal Video offers 4K/120fps portrait capture.

Drop to 1080p when workflow is the priority
1080p portrait at 30fps is a sensible choice when smaller files or simpler editing matter more than having a higher-resolution source. The right tradeoff depends on the scene and your editing needs; the camera’s 3K option is not a platform mandate.

Set color to match your editing workflow
For straightforward footage that you want to edit with minimal color work, use Standard. DJI advertises 10-bit D-Log M and HLG options; choose one only if you intend to grade or otherwise process the footage in post. These profiles add a post-production consideration, so they are not a universal quality upgrade for a creator who wants ready-to-edit clips.
DJI describes the Pocket 3’s sensor, color options, and video features on its official product page. Which profile looks best depends on the scene and the creator’s editing choices.

Manage exposure, gimbal movement, and sound
Exposure and white balance
Pro mode offers manual exposure and white-balance controls, as well as color, focus, channel, wind-noise reduction, and directional audio options. Manual exposure and white balance can help when lighting is stable and you can monitor the result. A common filmmaking convention is to set shutter speed near twice the frame rate—for example, roughly 1/60 second at 30fps—but this is optional guidance, not a Pocket 3 requirement. Low light and flickering lights can call for different choices.

Gimbal response
The Pocket 3 uses three-axis mechanical stabilization. DJI’s FAQ explains how to adjust gimbal rotational speed in the control center. A slower response can feel less reactive for gentle creator movement, while faster follow behavior may suit quick action. There is no single best speed for every scene; DJI’s manual also warns that Sport Mode maximizes follow speed while stabilization might be compromised.
Audio for speech
The camera has three microphones and supports directional audio options. It pairs directly with DJI Mic 2 and Mic Mini; the original DJI Mic requires its receiver. Consider an external microphone when clear speech matters. Audio choices affect sound capture, not the video resolution or frame rate.
Check storage and recording format
The Pocket 3 has no built-in storage, so insert a microSD card and confirm available capacity before a shoot. DJI lists MP4 recording with H.264 or HEVC and a maximum video bitrate of 130 Mbps in its 2023 user manual. The bitrate is a camera specification, not a recommendation for a social platform’s export setting.
