The best digital doorbell depends on your wiring, preferred smart-home platform, recording needs, and willingness to pay for cloud storage. These models offer useful ways to see and speak with visitors and review supported footage, but their advertised features are not proof that a doorbell prevents crime.

How to choose a digital doorbell

Check power and installation first

If you already have a wired doorbell, verify that its transformer and chime meet the requirements of the replacement. Google says its Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) requires a 16–24 VAC, 10–40 VA transformer and a chime; both are sold separately. TP-Link and Aqara offer battery and wired options among the products cited here, but requirements vary by model. Check the exact product specifications before purchase.

Match the exact features to your smart-home platform

An ecosystem logo does not guarantee that every feature works on that platform. Aqara lists Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Alexa support for its G4. Wyze documents differences between Alexa and Google Home; for example, Google Home does not support third-party doorbell-ring notifications for Wyze Video Doorbell v2. Check compatibility for the specific functions you want, such as ring alerts, two-way talk, or live view.

Decide where recordings should live

Cloud plans and local storage offer different trade-offs. Cloud recordings may be accessible through an account, while local cards avoid making cloud storage the only option. Local recordings can still be lost if the device or storage is stolen or damaged. Confirm the model’s storage limit, whether a card is included, and what features require a paid plan.

Model Power and installation Recording and subscription details Useful fit
Google Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen) Wired; requires a 16–24 VAC, 10–40 VA transformer and a chime, sold separately. Google’s 2026 product page lists six hours of ten-second event previews. It lists up to 30 or 60 days of event history on paid plans and up to 10 days of continuous recording on the Advanced plan. Consider if you have compatible wiring and want Google’s doorbell and account features. Longer recording history depends on the plan.
Ring doorbell Check the exact Ring model for power and installation requirements; not stated on the cited Ring product page. Ring says live video and answering notifications are available without a subscription, but videos and photos are not saved. Ring Protect enables saved motion video; the 2026 product page states up to 180 days. Consider if live answering without a plan is enough, or if you are comfortable paying for saved footage.
TP-Link Tapo D210 Battery model; TP-Link estimates up to six months between charges, depending on use. Supports local microSD storage up to 512 GB. The product page does not establish that a card is included. Consider if local storage is important and you want to avoid relying only on cloud recording.
Aqara G4 Battery pack or wired options; Aqara estimates up to four months on the battery pack. Aqara describes seven days of free event-based cloud clips and local microSD storage at the indoor chime. Consider if you want the listed Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, and Alexa integrations alongside local and cloud recording options.

Specifications and allowances in the table are vendor statements, not standardized independent test results. Google, Ring, TP-Link, and Aqara product details can change; confirm current terms and regional availability on the linked product pages.

What security features do—and do not—establish

Live view, two-way audio, motion alerts, activity zones, and saved clips can help you see who is at the door, respond, and review supported footage. Their presence alone does not establish that a product deters theft or reduces crime. No comparative crime-reduction figure is established for these models.

Consider privacy alongside convenience. Review who can access an account, whether footage can be shared, how the camera is framed, and whether recordings are stored locally or in the cloud. Google says the Nest Doorbell uses encrypted video and two-step verification; Ring describes privacy controls and video sharing on its product page.

Which type should you choose?

  • Choose a wired model if your existing transformer and chime meet the doorbell’s requirements, or you are prepared to address installation needs.
  • Choose a battery option if wired installation is unsuitable and you can accommodate periodic charging or battery maintenance.
  • Prioritize local storage if you want recordings on a memory card rather than relying solely on cloud history; check card limits and physical-security risks.
  • Prioritize platform-specific functions if ring alerts, two-way talk, or automations are central to your setup; verify the exact model-feature-platform combination.
  • Check plan terms before buying if you need long recording history. Free live viewing or event clips do not necessarily mean recordings are saved indefinitely.

Tom’s Guide’s 2026 buying guide likewise highlights interoperability and compatibility as comparison factors. It notes that cloud storage depends on internet access and that a stolen doorbell can expose local storage. Subscription terms and features vary by product, so compare current model-specific details rather than assuming the same arrangement across brands.
