For most people choosing a local-AI desktop, the first decision is memory capacity versus inference speed. StorageReview’s leaderboard, updated October 2, 2026, names the NVIDIA DGX Spark its best overall deskside AI system; it recommends discrete-GPU workstation towers when throughput and response time matter more than appliance-style efficiency. These are StorageReview’s category winners from its stated test suite—not universal winners for every model or workload.

How to choose a desktop for local AI

Begin with the largest model you expect to run, the context you need, and how quickly you need responses. StorageReview estimates that a 70B model at 4-bit quantization needs roughly 40–48GB of model-accessible memory before context. That is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: architecture, quantization method, runtime, and context length all affect actual memory use.

Unified-memory systems can make more capacity available to a model than a typical consumer GPU, while discrete-GPU towers offer dedicated VRAM and are positioned for higher inference throughput and lower latency. Neither category is automatically better: a larger model that fits is useful only if its response speed suits your work, and a fast system is not a fit if the model exceeds its usable memory.

  • Favor capacity and a compact appliance for experimentation with larger models, including 70B-class models, when lower speed is acceptable.
  • Favor a discrete-GPU tower for coding agents, tool-calling pipelines, and other multi-step workflows where model calls compound and latency or throughput is important.
  • Check the operating system, expansion, storage, power, and cooling before treating a memory figure as the whole answer.

StorageReview says its leaderboard uses vLLM online-serving throughput, time-to-first-token, time-per-output-token, MAMF compute efficiency, GDSIO storage testing, and street price. It says, “No system is ranked from a spec sheet.” The rankings below are that publisher’s conclusions; they are not independent test results.

What the recommendations mean in practice

DGX Spark and Acer Veriton GN100: capacity in a deskside system

StorageReview’s top deskside recommendation is the DGX Spark, with the GN100 selected as its preferred GB10 implementation. Both configurations are listed with 128GB unified LPDDR5X and integrated GB10. The publisher’s distinction between them is not a different memory capacity or chip: it says cooling separates implementations that share the silicon.

StorageReview positions 128GB unified-memory appliances for larger local models, including 70B-class models at high quantization and, in some cases, 120B-class workloads. That does not mean every model at those sizes will fit or run comfortably: usable memory, context, runtime, and response-speed requirements matter.

Strix Halo and HP Z2 Mini G1a: alternative form factors

The Ryzen AI Halo (Strix Halo) is the listed x86 choice for people who need Windows or a conventional x86 software stack. Its memory is stated as up to 128GB unified LPDDR5X, so the maximum is not a claim that every configuration has that capacity.

The HP Z2 Mini G1a is the leaderboard’s pick for local AI without a discrete GPU. StorageReview says it ran GPT-OSS 120B on this system. That result is a specific reported workload, not a general promise that every 120B model, quantization, or context will work the same way.

MSI XpertStation WS300: a much larger coherent-memory configuration

The MSI XpertStation WS300 is StorageReview’s GB300 category winner. Its reported 748GB combines 252GB of HBM3e and 496GB of LPDDR5X; the publisher says it served a 433GB GLM-5.2 checkpoint during testing. The ASUS ET900N G3 is the stated alternative. These are unusually large system figures, but memory capacity alone does not establish response speed or suitability for a particular workload.

Dell Precision 7875 and HP Z8 Fury G6i: discrete-GPU workstations

For a tower intended to prioritize local-AI throughput, StorageReview names the Dell Precision 7875, tested with two RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell cards and 192GB combined VRAM. The leaderboard says this configuration can hold 100B-class models in GPU memory, and notes that the chassis is limited to two dual-width cards.

Software, storage, power, and expansion checks

Operating system and software stack

StorageReview notes that DGX-class systems use DGX OS rather than Windows. If Windows or a standard x86 environment is required, it points to Strix Halo as an x86 alternative. Confirm that the operating system and software stack support the frameworks, drivers, and applications you intend to use; the leaderboard’s category award does not establish compatibility for every tool.

Expansion and local storage

The Dell Precision 7875 is described as supporting at most two dual-width cards, while the HP Z8 Fury G6i is described as supporting up to four Blackwell cards. For GB10 systems, StorageReview notes a single short M.2 slot and storage capacity topping out at around 4TB. If your models, datasets, or checkpoints need more local storage, verify the exact system’s expansion options before buying.

Power and electrical service

StorageReview gives up to 2700W for the HP Z8 Fury G6i’s dual power supplies. For the Comino Grando, it describes 2000W supplies with 180–264V input and says lower-power units are used on 110V service. The publisher advises checking circuit capacity; high-end configurations may require dedicated or 208/240V service. Confirm the requirements of the exact configuration with its manufacturer and have an electrician assess the intended circuit when necessary.

Cooling and room for the system

Cooling is a stated differentiator between GB10 systems using the same silicon, according to StorageReview. For multi-GPU towers, check the configuration’s thermal and power requirements along with physical space and airflow; a chassis’s stated maximum card count does not mean every maximum configuration has the same operating requirements as a two-card build.

What the leaderboard does not establish

The rankings are for local inference, not general workstation performance. StorageReview distinguishes its inference testing from rankings based on conventional workstation workloads such as SPECworkstation or rendering. Those benchmark classes answer different questions, so a result in one should not be substituted for the other.

The leaderboard considers street price, but the cited information here does not establish current transaction prices for the named systems. StorageReview’s October 2 update says a 64GB DGX Spark SKU was scheduled for October 23, 2026, at $4,999. Because that date is after October 4, 2026, it is a future scheduled release in this article’s date context—not confirmation that the SKU is available or that the price remains current.
