The best Dell XPS 13 alternative depends first on the software your classes require. For macOS users, the 13-inch MacBook Air with M5 is a strong all-around choice; for Windows travelers who want more connectivity options, consider the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition; and if you want a larger screen with built-in USB-A, look at the Acer Swift Air 14. Check the exact configuration, local price, and course-software compatibility before buying.
How to choose an XPS 13 alternative
Start with the applications, exam software, peripherals, and accessibility tools required by the student’s program. Ask instructors or the department whether those tools support macOS or Windows; compatibility depends on the specific software and is not established for every course by a laptop recommendation.
Then compare the actual configuration rather than relying on a model name. Check processor, memory, storage, display, weight, ports, and warranty on the specific listing. The XPS 13 itself varies by configuration, and TechRadar flags 8GB memory as a concern for heavier workloads. [TechRadar’s XPS 13 review]

- Battery evidence: Published runtime may be a manufacturer estimate or a reviewer’s test. Treat these as different kinds of evidence, not a head-to-head comparison.
- Ports: Count the ports on the exact SKU and consider whether connecting a charger uses one. A hub adds flexibility but is another item to carry.
- Local ownership: Check current regional availability, price, student eligibility, service, and warranty before ordering.

Tom’s Guide reports 15 hours 37 minutes in its own battery test. That is a publication test result, not a promise of student runtime: workload, settings, and configuration affect battery life. It is useful as evidence from one review, but it cannot be fairly compared with manufacturer estimates for other laptops.
Choose this model when macOS supports the student’s required applications and the configuration provides enough memory and storage. If a class depends on Windows-only software or specialized peripherals, confirm support or an acceptable workaround before switching operating systems.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition: a Windows travel candidate
RTINGS’ comparison presents the 2026 ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition as a premium Windows ultraportable for frequent travelers and business users who may value a wider port selection, optional cellular connectivity, or more configuration choices. Those are reasons to investigate it, not guarantees that every model has every port or cellular support. Verify the exact configuration and regional listing. Acer Swift Air 14: more screen and built-in ports
Windows Central describes the Swift Air 14 as a larger-screen alternative and lists dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, one USB-A 3.2 port, and a 3.5 mm audio jack. It cites a 1920 × 1200 resolution and 350-nit brightness. Check current regional configurations, since availability and final specifications can vary. [Windows Central’s XPS 13 and Swift Air 14 comparison]
Acer estimates 19 hours of video playback and 16 hours of web browsing for the 70 Wh battery, as reported by Windows Central in 2026. Those are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results; the article said its own battery testing had not yet determined real-world runtime. A larger screen can be useful for documents and split-screen work, but weigh that workspace against the laptop’s actual configured dimensions and carry weight.

MacBook Neo: consider the memory and software fit
TechRadar’s 2026 student-laptop guide lists the MacBook Neo with an A18 Pro, 8GB unified memory, a 13-inch 2408 × 1506 display, and up to 512GB SSD. The 8GB memory configuration merits particular attention if the student expects heavy multitasking or demanding course workloads. Confirm both memory adequacy and compatibility with required apps before choosing it. [TechRadar’s 2026 student laptop guide]
When to use a USB-C hub
The reviewed XPS 13 has two USB-C ports, so a USB-C hub with power pass-through can help if several peripherals need to stay connected while charging. Before buying a hub, check that it supports the laptop’s charging wattage, required data standards, and any external display resolution or refresh rate you need. A hub is useful only if its compatibility matches the laptop and peripherals. [TechRadar’s XPS 13 review]

Price and availability: check your region
Dell’s US comparison page lists the XPS 13 at a $699.99 starting price and $599 for eligible students; prices can change, and the lower figure is conditional on student eligibility. This is a US listing, not a price comparison for the alternatives or a guarantee of current local pricing. [Dell’s US XPS laptop comparison]
Dell India’s 2026 blog describes a US student offer of $599 versus a $699 general starting price, subject to the promotion’s eligibility, configuration limits, and end date. The blog also attributes claims that the XPS 13 is 12.7 mm thin and weighs 1 kg to Dell internal analysis; those are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative measurements. Check the offer page for its stated terms and do not assume the promotion applies in another region. [Dell India’s XPS 13 blog]
