HER and Lex are the clearest starting points for lesbians and queer women in the sources reviewed, but they offer different experiences: HER is a dating and community app that explicitly serves queer, bisexual, and lesbian women, while Lex is a text-centered queer social app built around personal-ad-style posts and community discovery. Neither is proven to have the best matches or the largest active local pool. Your location, preferred way to connect, and the app’s support for your identity and relationship goals matter more than a universal ranking.

How to choose a dating app as a lesbian or queer woman

Compare apps by the experience they describe and the controls they publish—not just by brand recognition. Before paying for a subscription, check whether the app has active people near you and whether its free version lets you assess the pool.

  • Audience: Is the service built for queer women, or does it serve a broader LGBTQ+ or general dating population?
  • Interaction style: Is it mainly profile browsing and swiping, or does it emphasize text, posts, and community discovery?
  • Identity and relationship settings: Can you describe your gender, sexuality, and relationship preferences in ways that fit you?
  • Privacy and moderation: What visibility controls, blocking, reporting, and community rules does the service document?
  • Practical fit: Are enough people active nearby, and do the free-tier limits and current price work for you?

Available sources do not establish comparable active-user counts by city, current prices, free-tier limits, match quality, or safety outcomes across services. A large global marketing figure cannot tell you whether an app is lively in your area.

HER: a dating and community app explicitly for queer women

HER describes itself as “The first dating app built exclusively for queer, bisexual, and lesbian women – not an afterthought on a straight app.” That is the company’s positioning, not an independently verified market distinction. Its App Store listing presents a wider LGBTQ+ community that includes lesbian, bisexual, queer, nonbinary, trans, and gender-nonconforming people, so it should not be described as lesbian-only. HER’s official site and App Store listing provide its descriptions.

The App Store listing displayed “14 million+” queer women and other LGBTQ+ users when accessed on October 8, 2026. This is a company-provided figure, not an independently verified count of active users, and it does not show how many people are near you. HER says core features are free, while its listing also mentions a premium membership and says pricing varies. Check the current offer and terms in your region rather than relying on a price quoted elsewhere.

Lex: text-led connections and queer community discovery

Lex calls itself “a lo-fi, text-centered social app for the queer community.” Its help center says it draws inspiration from old-school newspaper personal ads and is intended to help queer people form meaningful connections. That makes it a distinct option if you prefer words, posts, and community discovery to a selfie-first browsing experience; it does not establish that Lex is better for dating outcomes. See Lex’s description and help center overview.

Identity and visibility controls

Lex’s profile guidance says members can select up to three genders or write in a description, set a relationship type, and choose whether social accounts or groups appear on their profile. A separate setting, “Show me in People Discovery,” controls whether a profile appears in that discovery area. Turning it off is a visibility control, not a promise of complete anonymity. Details are in Lex’s profile and discovery help pages.

Published community rules

Lex’s guidelines say racism, transphobia, biphobia, harassment, and hate speech can lead to content removal or bans, and encourage users to report violations. These are stated policies; they do not show how often enforcement succeeds or prove that harassment is absent. Read Lex’s community guidelines.

What about mainstream and other queer dating apps?

Bumble, Tinder, OkCupid, Zoe, and Feeld also surfaced as possible services to investigate, but the available material does not establish their current features, identity settings, moderation policies, prices, or relative performance for lesbians and queer women. Treat them as candidates to check in your own market, not as verified equivalents to HER or Lex.

Hinge has published a 2026 LGBTQIA+ D.A.T.E. report, but the available information confirms only that the report exists; it does not support quoting a statistic or ranking Hinge for this audience. See Hinge’s report for its own material.

Which app should you try first?

  • Start with HER if you want an app whose stated focus is queer, bisexual, and lesbian women and that also presents itself as a community space.
  • Start with Lex if text-led personal ads, posts, and queer community discovery appeal more than a primarily photo-led approach, or if its profile and visibility controls suit your needs.
  • Compare both locally if you are unsure. Check who is active nearby, how well profiles support your identity and relationship preferences, and what the free version allows before subscribing.

For either app, use its reporting and blocking controls when needed, and take the time you need to verify someone’s identity and intentions before meeting. Published rules and privacy options are useful to understand, but they cannot guarantee a particular safety outcome.
