The best cycling shoe insert is the one that gives your foot the support you want without crowding your shoe. Current studies suggest inserts can change where pressure falls and how much support riders perceive, but they do not establish a dependable power gain, a universal comfort improvement, or one best design. Choose by contour, firmness, adjustability, and shoe fit—not performance promises.
What cycling shoe inserts can—and cannot—do
An insert changes the surface beneath your foot. Depending on its shape and construction, it may increase contact beneath parts of the foot or shift plantar pressure. Those are measurable effects, but they are not the same as proving that an insert prevents pain, makes a rider faster, or feels better over a long ride.
A 2014 systematic review found six eligible laboratory studies, with methodological quality scores ranging from 7 to 10 out of 14. The reviewers found some evidence that orthoses increase midfoot contact area and pressure beneath the big toe, but no power benefit in the available studies. They could not reach definitive conclusions about lower-limb movement, oxygen consumption, or the effect of wedges on power. Read the systematic review.

What the cycling studies found
| Study | What was compared | What it found | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bousie et al., 2013 | 12 cyclists rode at 90 rpm with a contoured orthosis and a flat insert during stationary cycling. | The contoured orthosis increased medial and lateral midfoot contact area and perceived arch and heel support. Participants did not report a comfort difference. | That a retail insert will improve comfort on long rides or suit every rider. Study details. |
| Bousie et al., 2018 | 23 cyclists tested orthoses of different hardness and forefoot posting conditions. | Hardness and posting changed contact area and pressure across foot regions. Comfort and support did not change consistently; a lateral forefoot post reduced heel comfort in that protocol. | That a particular firmness or post is broadly more comfortable or beneficial. Study details. |
| 2023 crossover study | Healthy male participants tested a polypropylene insole with selective aluminum at the metatarsal head and big toe against EVA and polypropylene comparators. | The aluminum-containing insole reduced maximum plantar pressure in the study setup. | That it prevents pain, increases power, or is the best choice for all cyclists. Study details. |
These studies are small and use specific laboratory or study conditions. Their results help explain how insert characteristics can affect contact and pressure; they do not rank the products available to buy.
How to choose an insert for your cycling shoes
1. Start with the support shape
Look for a contour that meets your arch comfortably rather than forcing your foot into a shape that feels intrusive. Contoured designs can increase perceived arch support, as the 2013 study found, but that study did not show a comfort gain. A supportive sensation is therefore a reasonable selection goal, not proof of improved performance.

- Shoe inserts & insoles protect and reduce stress on lower body joints
- Athletic shoes insoles keep you on your feet longer
- Shoe insoles provide flexible side-to-side support so you can move more, in any direction
- Arch support insoles help protect feet, knees & lower back from shock
- Athletic insoles for men designed for multiple sports & athletic activities including fitness classes
2. Consider firmness as a fit preference
Inserts may differ in material and stiffness. The 2018 study found that hardness affected pressure and contact patterns, but did not produce a consistent comfort or support advantage. Choose a firmness that feels stable and tolerable in your shoe; do not assume harder or softer is inherently better.
3. Treat posts and adjustable arch elements as setup options
Forefoot posting and modular arch pieces can change how pressure is distributed. The available study does not identify a universally beneficial post, and its lateral forefoot post reduced heel comfort under the tested protocol. If an insert offers adjustable elements, change them cautiously and assess how the whole foot feels rather than treating a particular setting as a performance upgrade.

- Designed for cyclists seeking performance and comfort, our insoles provide customizable support, pressure relief, and improve cycling efficiency. Please confirm your arch type before purchasing. You can cut the insoles to get a perfect shape.
- Shock Absorption: High-rebound forefoot and heel pads absorb the impact from the road or trail, which helps reduce fatigue in your feet and joints during long rides. Additionally, the durable materials used resist wear, ensuring long-term use.
- Comfort: The breathable mesh top fabric wicks sweat away from your feet during long rides. The bottom perforations enhance airflow within the shoe. Besides, the insoles are flexible, allowing for natural ankle movement while you're cycling.
- Tailored Support: Three arch heights (low/medium/high) with a deep heel cup stabilize your foot in the shoe. This boosts cycling stability by securing your foot position and promoting proper alignment during pedaling, distributing pressure evenly across the footbed.
- Customer Service: Let our insoles support your riding experience. Should you have any concerns, feel free to reach out to us.
4. Check shoe volume before buying
Cycling shoes often fit closely, so even a supportive replacement insert can leave too little room. Shimano describes its custom-fit option as using heat-moldable EVA, a rigid high-density polyethylene support structure, and customizable arch inserts; its statements about comfort, stability, and power transmission are manufacturer claims, not independent comparative findings. Check the insert maker’s sizing and compatibility information, then consider whether the shoe has room for a thicker or more contoured footbed. A rider discussion also describes a replacement insert making an already snug shoe tighter; that is an individual fit report, not evidence that every insert does so. Shimano’s insole technology description and the rider discussion provide those examples.
5. Match the insert to the outcome you want
- More arch contact: consider a contoured shape, while judging it by fit and feel.
- A different pressure pattern: firmness, contour, and posting can affect contact and pressure, but the effect is not a guaranteed comfort or power benefit.
- Extra cycling power: current evidence cited here does not establish that inserts reliably increase power.
How to assess a candidate insert
- Check the shoe first. Note whether your current shoe feels secure and whether it has spare internal room. An insert that lifts or crowds the foot may undermine the fit you already have.
- Compare the shape and construction. Review the arch contour, firmness, thickness, and any forefoot post or adjustable support. Confirm that the insert is intended to fit your shoe size and type.
- Make one change at a time. When possible, start with a single insert configuration so you can tell whether the shape or a particular adjustment changes the feel.
- Check fit and comfort in the shoe. Look for pressure, heel discomfort, or a tighter-than-expected fit. A change in support sensation does not by itself show that the insert improves cycling performance.
- Keep the result personal. If the insert feels uncomfortable or compromises the shoe fit, it is not a good match for you, regardless of its construction claims.
Is there a research-proven best cycling shoe insert?
No. The cited evidence does not include enough direct, head-to-head retail-product testing to identify a research-proven winner. It supports comparing insert features and assessing fit, while keeping pressure changes, perceived support, comfort, and power as distinct outcomes. A product may suit an individual rider without being established as the best choice for cyclists generally.
