There is no single pressure, force, or blade number that works for every sticker paper or printable vinyl. In Cricut Design Space, choose the material preset that matches your exact stock and machine, then make a small test cut before committing a full sheet. For Cricut printable sticker paper and printable vinyl, print with an inkjet printer, keep the registration marks unobstructed, and calibrate if cuts are offset.

The reliable workflow is: verify Print Then Cut support, prepare the artwork, select the matching preset, print without changing the registration layout, load the sheet exactly as shown, and let the machine scan before cutting.

The correct starting settings

Use the following as a decision guide rather than as universal machine numbers. Design Space’s preset controls the cut behavior for a particular material; Cricut does not publish one pressure-and-blade combination that applies to every printable sticker paper and vinyl brand.

Decision Recommended choice Important qualification
Material setting Browse All Materials, then select the preset matching the exact stock Use the Compatible tab when following Create Sticker; do not copy a setting from an unrelated material
Printer Inkjet for Cricut printable sticker materials Cricut warns that laser heat can damage the material or printer
Print orientation Portrait Keep the registration-mark layout unchanged
Print quality High or highest available quality Use enough ink for solid, readable sensor marks
Bleed Usually on for general Print Then Cut; off for a borderless Create Sticker design Bleed adds a small color border that is trimmed away; the borderless exception is specifically called out by Cricut
Test cut Always test unfamiliar stock Thickness, coating, liner, and finish vary between brands and batches

If a preset for your exact product is not listed, choose the closest documented material only as a starting point and test on a scrap or corner. Increase or decrease the setting in small steps only after confirming whether the problem is an incomplete cut, a cut through the liner, or a scanning error.

Check machine and material compatibility first

Machines that support Print Then Cut

Cricut’s current Print Then Cut guidance covers supported Explore, Maker, Venture, Joy Xtra, and Joy 2 families. The original Cricut Joy is not Print Then Cut capable. Product support can change as Design Space evolves, so confirm your exact model in the application before designing a sheet.

For an Explore Air 2 or earlier, Cricut says to set the Smart Set dial to Custom before choosing a material in Design Space. Newer machines generally use the on-screen material picker, but the same rule applies: select the stock you actually loaded.

Sensor and finish limitations

Print Then Cut depends on the machine reading a black registration box around the printed page. Older Explore Air 2 and earlier machines are limited to non-reflective white materials in Cricut’s compatibility guidance. Newer listed families can handle non-reflective white, lightly colored, and simple patterned materials, but reflective surfaces can still confuse the sensor.

Cricut Waterproof Sticker Paper (20 White Sheets, 8.5x11)
  • 20 sheets Printable Vinyl 8.5 in x 11 in (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm) in White; 20 sheets Vinyl Laminate 8.5 in x 11 in (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm)
  • Waterproof and UV resistant up to 2 years
  • Requires inkjet printer
  • Compatible with Cricut Maker 3/4, Explore 3/4, and Joy Xtra machines
Material appearance Likely sensor behavior What to do
Plain, non-reflective white Most reliable across supported machines Use this for your first test and for diagnosing alignment problems
Light colors or simple patterns Supported on newer listed machines Confirm your model’s compatibility before buying a large pack
Glossy, metallic, glitter, dark, or holographic May prevent scanning or shift the cut Use only when the material is explicitly supported; do not assume an exception applies to another brand
Specialty Cricut stock Some Cricut-branded materials are exceptions Follow the product-specific instructions rather than general finish rules

Glossy laminate can be especially troublesome because it reflects the sensor light. If a sheet prints correctly but the machine cannot find the registration marks, treat finish and contrast as the first suspects before changing blade or pressure.

Choose the preset in Design Space

  1. Open the Make screen. After your design is ready, continue to the material-selection step.
  2. Open Browse All Materials. Search for the exact sticker paper or printable-vinyl product when it is listed.
  3. Use Compatible when following Create Sticker. Cricut’s Create Sticker workflow filters choices that are compatible with that feature and your machine.
  4. For an Explore Air 2 or earlier, turn the Smart Set dial to Custom first. Then let Design Space provide the material choices.
  5. Load the selected stock only after confirming the preset. If you change to a different paper or vinyl, return to material selection and choose again.
  6. Run a small test. A test cut reveals whether the blade reaches the adhesive layer without cutting deeply into the mat.

The preset is a coordinated material profile, not merely a blade-depth label. A thicker printable vinyl may need a different profile from thin sticker paper even when both have an adhesive backing. That is why a number copied from a video or a different product can produce either unweedable cuts or a liner cut-through.

Prepare the artwork so the cut line is correct

Flatten when you want one outside contour

If your design contains multiple layers but should print as one image and cut only around its outside edge, select the layers and choose Flatten. Cricut converts them into one printable layer for Print Then Cut.

Cricut® Printable Sticker Paper (8 ct)
  • INCLUDES - 8 sheets 8.5 in x 11 in (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm) in White
  • FEATURES - A thin liner to reduce printer jams.
  • USE WITH - Requires inkjet printer
  • COMPATIBLE WITH - Cricut Explore and Cricut Maker machines, Cricut Joy Xtra, and Cricut Venture

Do not use Attach as a substitute for Flatten

Attach preserves the placement of separate layers. Cricut warns that an attached design can still cut around individual elements. Use Attach when you need layout preserved for separate cuts; use Flatten when the finished sticker needs a single outer contour.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the sticker border deliberately

Decide whether the artwork has a visible border before printing. A white or colored border gives the cut some tolerance around the artwork. If you are using Create Sticker and the design has no border, Cricut specifically advises turning Bleed off before printing. For general Print Then Cut work, Cricut recommends bleed because the extra color extends beyond the intended edge and is trimmed during cutting.

Print without damaging the registration layout

Use an inkjet printer for Cricut printable sticker materials

Cricut’s printable sticker paper and sticker-material instructions specify inkjet printers. Laser printers use heat that can damage the stock or the printer. Cricut’s general Print Then Cut documentation notes that laser can be suitable for regular paper or media specifically made to withstand laser heat, but that exception does not apply to Cricut printable sticker paper or sticker material unless the product instructions explicitly say so.

Identify the printable face

Feed the sheet so the artwork prints on its designated printable side. On current Cricut stock, Cricut describes the blank side as printable and the reverse as carrying a grid or logo. Older packaging may differ, so check the package and printer’s feed path instead of relying on a generic “face up” rule.

Use these print-dialog settings

  • Select Portrait orientation.
  • Choose High or Highest print quality.
  • Print one page per sheet.
  • Use the printer’s normal paper path recommended for adhesive media.
  • Do not enlarge, shrink to fit, center, or apply any scale percentage.
  • Do not enable edge-to-edge or borderless printing.
  • Avoid narrow-margin options that could clip the registration marks.

The goal is not merely a sharp image; it is an unchanged relationship between the artwork and the black registration box. Any scaling or repositioning can make a perfectly calibrated machine cut in the wrong place.

Load the sheet and make the cut

  1. Let the print settle. Give ink the time recommended by your printer and material packaging before placing the sheet on the mat. Smearing can obscure the registration marks and damage the printable surface.
  2. Place the sheet exactly as shown in Design Space. Align the top and left edges with the mat markings and smooth the sheet onto a LightGrip-style mat or the mat specified by Cricut for your workflow.
  3. Keep the registration area clear. Do not cover, trim, laminate over, or decorate the black marks before scanning.
  4. Load the mat squarely. Engage both rollers and start the load command in Design Space.
  5. Allow the scan to finish. The machine reads the registration marks before moving to the cut path. If scanning fails, unload only after Design Space tells you to, then investigate finish, lighting, and print quality.
  6. Inspect the test cut. The sticker layer should separate cleanly while the backing remains intact unless your selected material instructions call for a different result.

When to calibrate Print Then Cut

Cricut machines ship pre-calibrated. Calibration is appropriate when cuts consistently miss the printed artwork, when Design Space requests it, or after troubleshooting confirms that the page was printed at 100% scale and the sensor can read the marks.

Cricut Sticker Paper for Laser Printers (25 White Sheets, 8.5x11)
  • INCLUDES - 25 sheets, 8.5 in x 11 in (21.6 cm x 27.9 cm) in White.
  • MAKE FULL-COLOR PROJECTS - Print, then cut vivid designs for custom laptop stickers, decor, labels, and so much more.
  • EASY TO PEEL & APPLY - Easily remove backing, then apply it to a surface.
  • USE WITH - Black & white and color laser printers.
  • CUT OUT THE GUESSWORK - Your Cricut cutting machine automatically recognizes & precision-cuts the design.
  1. Open the machine calibration flow in Design Space.
  2. Print the calibration sheet in Portrait mode with black ink, high print quality, and sufficient ink.
  3. Use plain, white, non-textured copy paper for the calibration sheet.
  4. Print one page only. Do not scale, center, or use edge printing.
  5. Place the sheet on the mat in the orientation shown on screen.
  6. Follow the machine’s prompts to make the test cuts and select the line that is most accurately aligned.

Placement differs between Venture and other smart-cutting machines, so follow the diagram for your model rather than using a generic mat position. Calibration corrects the machine’s reading and cut alignment; it cannot compensate for a printer that has enlarged the page, a glossy surface that hides marks, or artwork that was positioned incorrectly.

Paper versus printable vinyl: choose by the job

Characteristic Printable sticker paper Printable vinyl
Typical construction Printable face with an adhesive backing Printable vinyl face with an adhesive liner
Preset choice Use the exact sticker-paper preset when available Use the exact printable-vinyl preset when available
Printer requirement for Cricut materials Inkjet Inkjet
Finish concerns Glossy coatings may affect sensor reading Glossy, metallic, dark, and holographic finishes may affect sensor reading
Best first test Small simple sticker on non-reflective stock Small simple sticker on non-reflective stock

Do not infer cut settings from the word “vinyl” alone. Printable vinyl can differ in thickness, liner stiffness, and surface coating. The product’s exact preset and a test cut are more useful than a generic blade-depth recommendation.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely cause Correction
Design Space cannot find registration marks Glossy, reflective, dark, or holographic surface; marks clipped or altered; insufficient contrast Use supported non-reflective stock, reprint without scaling or borderless mode, and keep the sensor area unobstructed
Cut is shifted consistently in one direction Calibration or print scaling problem Print at 100% with no “fit to page,” then run calibration if the offset remains
Cut follows individual objects instead of the outside edge Layers were attached rather than flattened Undo the attachment and flatten the artwork into one printable layer
Ink smears during loading Surface was not dry or the printer feed path rubbed the coating Allow the print to dry, use the recommended feed path, and test a single sheet
Blade cuts through the mat or leaves the sticker attached Preset does not match the stock Stop the job, verify the material name, and test a lower or higher profile only after checking the product instructions
Sticker edge has a thin white halo Bleed or border choice does not match the design Use bleed for general edge coverage; turn it off for a borderless Create Sticker design as Cricut directs
Sheet loads crooked Mat alignment, roller engagement, or curled stock Square the sheet to the mat, smooth the liner, and ensure both rollers grip before starting

A dependable workflow for unfamiliar stock

  1. Confirm that your machine appears as a Print Then Cut model in Design Space.
  2. Read the package for printable-side and printer requirements.
  3. Use an inkjet printer for Cricut printable sticker paper or printable vinyl.
  4. Print one sample in portrait at high quality with scaling, centering, and borderless printing disabled.
  5. Check that the registration marks are dark, complete, and on a non-reflective surface.
  6. Flatten artwork when a single outside contour is required.
  7. Set bleed according to the design: generally on, but off for a borderless Create Sticker design.
  8. Select the exact material preset under Browse All Materials or Compatible.
  9. Run a small test cut before filling the mat.
  10. Calibrate only when alignment remains inaccurate after print and loading checks.

What “best settings” means in practice

The best setting is the one that matches three variables at once: your Cricut model, the physical stock, and the finish visible to the sensor. A preset that cuts thin matte sticker paper cleanly may be wrong for a thick laminated printable vinyl, even if both sheets look similar in the package. Machine generation matters because sensor compatibility differs, and printer setup matters because any change in page scale changes every cut coordinate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a job fails, change one variable at a time. First verify the printer type, printable side, orientation, and scale. Next check registration-mark visibility and material finish. Then confirm the Design Space preset. Only after those checks should you recalibrate or adjust the cut profile. This order prevents a pressure change from masking a printing or scanning problem.
