OSWorld is the strongest default for testing reliable desktop automation across real applications and operating systems. It evaluates multimodal agents in Ubuntu, Windows, and macOS environments, supports cross-application workflows, and checks whether the requested end state was actually achieved. Use BrowserGym for browser-only agents, OpenHands when computer interaction is one component of a coding agent, CUAWright for studying desktop task demonstrations, and a direct computer-use model API only when you are prepared to build the orchestration, verification, safety, and audit layers around it.

The important distinction is between a framework that demonstrates actions and one that proves an outcome. Reliable automation needs repeatable environments, executable postcondition checks, detailed traces, bounded retries, and a safe handoff when the agent cannot determine the current state.

What a computer-use agent framework must do

A computer-use agent receives a goal, observes a graphical or browser environment, chooses actions, and continues until it reaches a verifiable state. The framework around the model determines whether that process can be reproduced and trusted. A screenshot-and-click demo is not enough for production: a click can land on the wrong control, a dialog can appear at a different time, or an application can retain stale state from an earlier run.

Evaluate every candidate on these dimensions:

  • Environment scope: browser-only pages, one desktop application, or workflows that cross several applications and operating systems.
  • Action interface: DOM or accessibility selectors, screenshot coordinates, keyboard events, application APIs, or a hybrid.
  • Outcome evaluation: executable checks of files, records, settings, or application state rather than a judgement based only on the action trace.
  • Reproducibility: snapshots, deterministic setup, seeded data, and the ability to start from intermediate states.
  • Observability: screenshots, accessibility trees, tool calls, timing, token use, and cost data.
  • Recovery and safety: bounded retries, validation before destructive actions, rollback, and human approval for ambiguous states.
  • Operational fit: local or hosted execution, supported operating systems, maintenance burden, and the work required to harden a research framework for production.

These criteria explain why the best benchmark is not automatically the best runtime. A benchmark can provide excellent task definitions and evaluators while leaving deployment, authentication, secrets management, and human escalation to your team.

OSWorld Acceptance testing for open-ended desktop automation Real Ubuntu, Windows, and macOS environments; multimodal interaction; cross-application workflows Execution-based evaluators, task setup, and repeatable environment preparation It is an evaluation environment, so production orchestration and support still need to be engineered.
BrowserGym Browser-agent development and web benchmark comparison Browser tasks covering DOM, visual, and application-style web interactions Multiple benchmark suites and extensible task infrastructure The maintainers explicitly caution that it is not a consumer product; production hardening is your responsibility.
OpenHands Coding or tool-using agents that also operate a browser or desktop Computer interaction combined with software-engineering tools and workflows Inputs, outputs, tool executions, timing, and cost recorded by its Index work Broader than a dedicated desktop-RPA runtime, so you must define your own desktop reliability boundary.

OSWorld: the default acceptance-test layer

What it covers

OSWorld is designed as a scalable real-computer environment for multimodal agents. Its project description covers task setup, execution-based evaluation, and interactive learning across Ubuntu, Windows, and macOS. Tasks can require several applications in one workflow, which exposes failures that a browser-only benchmark cannot see: copying data between programs, saving to the correct location, handling native dialogs, and preserving state across a long sequence.

The project page lists 369 task templates and 134 execution-based evaluation functions. Those evaluators matter because they inspect the resulting computer state instead of awarding success merely because an agent emitted plausible actions. For a team building a production agent with another runtime, OSWorld can serve as an independent acceptance-test layer.

How to use it for a reliability program

  1. Define the task contract. Write the starting state, user goal, allowed applications, forbidden side effects, and the exact state that counts as success.
  2. Prepare a clean environment. Use the operating-system image and application versions required by the task, seed the same files or records, and capture a restorable snapshot.
  3. Run the agent without manual rescue. Record every observation, action, tool response, and elapsed time. A run that succeeds only after a person clicks through a dialog is not an autonomous success.
  4. Execute the evaluator. Check files, application records, settings, or other postconditions with an executable function. Preserve the evaluator output with the run identifier.
  5. Repeat from the same snapshot. Measure success across multiple trials rather than treating one successful trajectory as representative.
  6. Vary the initial state. Start from intermediate checkpoints and realistic differences such as an already-open window, an extra notification, or a partially completed form.
  7. Classify failures. Separate perception or grounding errors, planning mistakes, action execution errors, application failures, and evaluator failures.
  8. Promote only stable tasks. Set a required success rate and a maximum retry count, then move a task into production only when it meets both the outcome and safety thresholds.

What OSWorld does not solve

OSWorld does not remove the need for production controls. You still need secret handling, account isolation, network policy, logging retention, rate limits, rollback, and a human-approval path for irreversible actions. Its benchmark score is also not a guarantee for your internal applications: a task can be easy in a seeded image and fragile in a live tenant with changing data.

BrowserGym: the browser-specialist choice

BrowserGym is intended to accelerate web-agent development through an open and extensible framework. Its official repository lists MiniWoB, WebArena, WebArenaVerified, VisualWebArena, WorkArena, AssistantBench, WebLINX, OpenApps, TimeWarp, and Knows. This breadth lets a team compare policies across short synthetic tasks, realistic web applications, visual interactions, and longer workflows.

Choose BrowserGym when the workload is primarily browser interaction or when you are developing and comparing web-agent policies. Use DOM or accessibility information whenever it is available, then add visual grounding for controls that cannot be addressed reliably through structured page data.

The maintainers state that BrowserGym is not meant to be a consumer product and advise using it with caution. Treat that warning as an engineering requirement: pin browser and benchmark versions, isolate credentials, maintain your own support layer, and add end-state checks for every business-critical task.

OpenHands: computer use inside a broader coding agent

OpenHands is a better fit when desktop or browser actions are one tool among many in a software-engineering agent. A coding workflow might inspect a repository, run tests, open a browser to reproduce a bug, edit a file, and report the result. In that situation, a single agent framework can preserve context across shell commands, code edits, and computer interaction.

Its OpenHands Index work records model inputs and outputs, tool executions, timing, and cost. That telemetry is valuable for diagnosing why a run failed and for controlling operational spend. You can identify whether a task is spending time on repeated screenshots, issuing unnecessary tool calls, or entering a retry loop.

OpenHands is broader than a dedicated desktop-RPA runtime. Define a narrow computer-use boundary, require a postcondition after each high-risk operation, and keep application-specific recovery logic outside the model prompt. For example, a deployment agent should verify that a file was actually written and tests passed rather than infer success from a terminal transcript.

CUAWright: demonstrations for task design

CUAWright provides desktop and browser task demonstrations spanning terminal work, Chrome, LibreOffice, email, calendars, image processing, and other applications. It is useful when you need examples of how a goal can be decomposed into observable subtasks and how an agent’s interaction pattern changes between structured and purely visual interfaces.

Direct computer-use model APIs

A direct computer-use API can be attractive when you want a managed model and a universal screen, mouse, and keyboard interface instead of maintaining a complete agent stack. It is also the approach that leaves the most engineering to you. The API supplies observations and actions; your system must decide when an action is safe, whether it worked, and what to do next.

Minimum control loop

  1. Observe: capture the current screenshot and, where possible, accessibility metadata or application state.
  2. Plan: convert the user goal into a short, explicit next action with a stated expected result.
  3. Act: issue one bounded mouse, keyboard, or application-level operation.
  4. Verify: check the expected result using a selector, file hash, record query, window title, or other deterministic signal.
  5. Recover: retry only when the failure is classified and the retry is safe; otherwise restore or escalate.
  6. Audit: persist the observation, action, verification result, model response, timing, and operator decision.

Raw coordinate clicking should be the fallback, not the default. Prefer deterministic selectors, accessibility metadata, or application APIs when they expose the required operation. Coordinates are sensitive to window size, scaling, responsive layouts, notifications, and small visual changes.

What the reliability numbers actually show

Desktop-agent scores vary by benchmark version, task set, model, and scoring method. The figures below come from distinct evaluations and must not be combined into a single leaderboard.

Evaluation snapshot Result How to interpret it
OSWorld original abstract, 2024 Humans completed more than 72.36% of tasks; the best model completed 12.24%. The gap was attributed primarily to GUI grounding and operational knowledge.
OpenAI CUA evaluation, 2025 38.1% on OSWorld, compared with 22.0% for the previous state of the art and 72.4% human performance. This is a separate evaluation snapshot with its own model and test conditions.
OSWorld 2.0, 2026 The best listed model achieved 20.6% binary completion and a 54.8% partial score on 108 long-horizon workflows. Partial progress can be substantial even when the complete workflow fails; long, stateful tasks remain difficult.

A 2026 reliability study identifies three recurring causes of failure: execution stochasticity, ambiguity in task specifications, and variability in agent behavior. In practical terms, a successful trace proves only that one run worked under one state. Reliability claims require repeated trials, deliberately ambiguous states, and tested recovery paths.

How to choose for a specific project

Choose OSWorld when desktop breadth is the requirement

Select OSWorld when your acceptance criteria include real applications, native dialogs, several operating systems, or workflows that move between programs. Even if the production agent uses a different runtime, use OSWorld-style execution checks to verify the final state.

Choose BrowserGym when the browser is the product surface

Use BrowserGym for browser-centric workloads, web-agent policy experiments, and comparisons across established web task suites. Add your own version pinning, credentials isolation, postcondition evaluators, and operational monitoring before exposing an agent to customer data.

Choose OpenHands when coding and computer use share one context

OpenHands fits software-engineering agents that must combine code, terminal, browser, and computer actions. Its telemetry helps explain latency and cost, but you still need application-specific checks and a clear boundary around irreversible operations.

Choose CUAWright when you are designing tasks or demonstrations

Use CUAWright to learn how tasks can be decomposed across terminal, browser, office, communication, and media applications. Validate every resulting workflow on your own images and data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a direct API when you can build the control plane

A direct API is reasonable for teams that want a managed model and are prepared to implement state tracking, deterministic verification, retries, rollback, security isolation, and human handoff. It is not a shortcut around those requirements.

Architecture practices that improve reliability

Separate planning, grounding, and execution

Keep the high-level plan distinct from the component that identifies a target on the current screen and the component that performs the action. This makes it possible to replace coordinate grounding with an accessibility selector without rewriting the task planner.

Use deterministic signals first

Selectors, accessibility trees, application APIs, file metadata, and database queries are less fragile than visual guesses. Use screenshots for context and for controls that have no structured interface, but verify the effect through a deterministic signal whenever one exists.

Make every dangerous step transactional

Before deleting, sending, publishing, purchasing, or changing permissions, check the target and summarize the pending effect. Require explicit approval when the state is ambiguous. If the application supports undo or drafts, use it and record the rollback identifier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Instrument the whole run

Store screenshots before and after actions, accessibility or DOM snapshots when available, tool calls, model outputs, timestamps, latency, token use, cost, evaluator results, and human interventions. Without this record, a team cannot distinguish a model failure from a network timeout or an application regression.

Bound retries and detect loops

Set a maximum number of attempts for each action and for the overall task. Detect repeated screenshots, identical clicks, unchanged window titles, and oscillating navigation. Stop and escalate instead of allowing an agent to consume unbounded time while making no progress.

A practical evaluation procedure

  1. Write a measurable goal. Replace vague wording such as complete the report with a state description: the file name, location, required fields, and confirmation that the application saved it.
  2. List preconditions. Specify the operating system, application versions, account permissions, available files, network access, and initial window state.
  3. Create an isolated image. Snapshot the environment so every trial starts with the same data and so a failed run can be restored without manual cleanup.
  4. Attach an evaluator. Implement checks that inspect the resulting file, record, setting, or application state. Do not score an action sequence as successful solely because it looks plausible.
  5. Run repeated trials. Keep the model and task fixed while repeating from a clean snapshot. Report the number of attempts, complete successes, partial scores, and intervention count.
  6. Inject realistic variation. Change nonessential window positions, add notifications, vary harmless data values, and begin from intermediate checkpoints to expose brittle grounding.
  7. Test recovery. Interrupt network access, close a window, present an unexpected dialog, or leave a form partially complete. Confirm that the agent detects the deviation and either recovers safely or asks for help.
  8. Set release gates. Require a minimum complete-success rate, zero unacceptable side effects, bounded latency and cost, and a documented human-escalation path before deployment.

Common failure modes and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Engineering response
The agent clicks the wrong control after a layout change. Coordinate grounding without stable context. Prefer accessibility or DOM selectors; anchor visual actions to a nearby label; verify the resulting state immediately.
The trace looks correct but the task is not complete. No executable end-state check. Add a file, record, setting, or application-state evaluator and fail closed when it cannot confirm success.
Results vary between identical runs. Execution stochasticity, timing races, or residual state. Reset from a snapshot, wait on observable conditions instead of fixed sleeps, and report repeated-trial statistics.
The agent repeats the same action. It cannot detect that the screen or application state is unchanged. Compare observations, cap retries, and route the task to recovery or human review.
A native dialog blocks progress. Browser-only assumptions or missing desktop grounding. Include dialog states in the task definition, expose window and accessibility metadata, and test the complete cross-application workflow.
A destructive action occurs with the wrong target. Ambiguous task wording or insufficient confirmation. Require target disambiguation, show a confirmation summary, and use undo or a reversible draft where available.
Costs and latency rise unexpectedly. Long screenshots, excessive tool calls, or retry loops. Record timing and token use, compress or scope observations, set budgets, and stop when progress indicators remain unchanged.

Production readiness checklist

  • Tasks have explicit preconditions, postconditions, and forbidden side effects.
  • Each critical action uses a deterministic selector, accessibility signal, or application API when available.
  • Visual actions have an immediate verification step.
  • Environments are isolated, resettable, and version-pinned.
  • Credentials and sensitive data are separated from benchmark fixtures and logs.
  • Screenshots, action traces, tool calls, timing, token use, cost, and evaluator output are retained according to your security policy.
  • Retries are bounded and loop detection is active.
  • Destructive or irreversible operations require confirmation or human approval.
  • Repeated trials include ambiguous states and recovery scenarios.
  • Release decisions use complete outcomes, not only partial progress or attractive demonstrations.

Verdict

For reliable desktop automation, start with OSWorld as the acceptance-test and evaluation layer. Its real operating-system environments, cross-application tasks, and execution-based evaluators address the parts of computer use that demos routinely hide. Add BrowserGym for browser-specific development, OpenHands for coding agents that also use computers, and CUAWright for task-design examples. A direct computer-use API can power the model layer, but reliability comes from the surrounding control plane: deterministic grounding, executable verification, repeatable environments, bounded recovery, observability, and human escalation.
