FanControl is the best starting point if you want free, customizable fan control on Windows 10 or 11. Argus Monitor is the stronger fit if you want paid software with profiles, broader temperature sources, and multiple controller options. Neither works with every motherboard or fan setup: check what your hardware exposes before choosing.

FanControl vs. Argus Monitor: which should you choose?

Software Best for What it offers Key limitation
FanControl Users who want a free tool and custom fan curves CPU, GPU, and case-fan control, custom curves, and sensor monitoring on Windows 10 and 11, according to its official site. Available controls and sensors depend on the hardware the system exposes.
Argus Monitor Users who want profiles and to combine temperature sources across supported hardware Fixed or curve-based control using supported CPU, GPU, HDD/SSD, motherboard, AIO, and external-controller temperatures, plus profiles and multi-controller behavior, according to its official product page. It is a paid product with an evaluation period; motherboard control depends on compatible hardware.

There is no independent, controlled comparison here showing that either program produces lower temperatures, less noise, or greater reliability. Argus Monitor calls itself “the best application for software fan control for Windows” on its official overview; that is the vendor’s positioning, not an independent test result.

Check compatibility before installing

Fan-control software can only adjust channels and read sensors that are accessible to it. A useful first step is to identify where each fan is connected and which temperatures the software can see.

  • Motherboard fans: Argus Monitor says motherboard control requires a supported Super I/O monitoring chip. The channels available depend on the hardware the system exposes. Check its mainboard support information before relying on software control.
  • Fan headers: Find whether each fan connects to a motherboard header or a separate controller, and whether that connection supports the control method you need. Software cannot control an inaccessible header.
  • GPU fans: GPU control is a separate compatibility question from motherboard control. Argus documents support for fan control on Nvidia, AMD, and Intel graphics cards; that does not establish that every card or system configuration is supported. See its GPU fan-control documentation.
  • AIO cooling: Check whether the pump and radiator fans connect to motherboard headers, the AIO itself, or another controller. Argus lists AIO temperatures among its possible control inputs, but the connections and hardware still determine what can be managed.
  • Sensors: Confirm that the temperatures you want to use—such as CPU, GPU, drive, or motherboard readings—appear in the software. A desired sensor is not usable if it is not exposed to the application.

For FanControl, the vendor likewise cautions that available controls vary with hardware. Its Windows site describes CPU, GPU, and case-fan control, but that is not a guarantee that every component will be detected.

ARCTIC Fan Controller – 10 Ports with Individual PWM Control, Windows & Linux (Kernel 7.2+) Support, 2 A per Port, 4.5 A Total, Magnetic or Adhesive mounting
  • OPTIMIZE YOUR AIRFLOW: While multi-fan setups improve cooling, they increase complexity. Using a dedicated fan controller ensures precise management and superior performance for your PC build.
  • MAX OUT YOUR FAN SETUP: Enjoy independent control for every fan, moving beyond limited hub signals for customization.
  • POWER YOUR BULD: Supplies up to 2 A per port and a total maximum current of 4.5 A, unlike motherboards where different ports may provide varying output levels.
  • PLUG & PLAY SUPPORT: Native driver support for both Windows and Linux (Kernel 7.2+) enables compatibility with a wide range of fan‑control and monitoring software.
  • ZERO CABLE CHAOS: Centralized cable management through a fan controller ensures a cleaner build by eliminating the need for extensions and Y-splitter cables.

FanControl: the free choice for custom curves

FanControl is a practical first option if you want to build your own response curves without paying for a license. Its official site describes the app as free for Windows 10 and 11, with sensor monitoring and CPU, GPU, and case-fan control.

Before relying on a profile, check that the program detects both the fan channel and the temperature sensor you intend to use. The feature set is useful only for the hardware that is visible to the software; consult the FanControl site for its stated capabilities.

Argus Monitor: broader inputs and controller workflows

Argus Monitor is worth considering if you want to base fan behavior on more than one type of temperature source or manage profiles across supported controllers. Its official product information describes fixed-speed and curve-based control using CPU, GPU, HDD/SSD, motherboard, AIO, and external-controller temperatures, along with profile and multi-controller features.

Its documentation also describes options including hysteresis, averaging, and rate limiting. These can help shape how a curve responds rather than reacting immediately to every sensor fluctuation. The exact controls available depend on the hardware and software configuration; check the Argus Monitor product and support information for current details.

What to do when software cannot detect or control a fan

  • If a motherboard fan channel is missing: check whether the board’s monitoring chip is supported and whether the fan is actually connected to a controllable motherboard header. Argus’s motherboard requirements are described on its support pages.
  • If a GPU fan is missing: treat GPU support separately from motherboard support. Check the application’s documentation and whether the GPU temperature and fan channel are visible.
  • If an AIO or controller-managed fan is missing: identify which device owns the fan connection and whether the application supports that control path.
  • If the fan is controlled only by firmware: use the motherboard BIOS/UEFI or the relevant vendor utility if it exposes the needed setting. Software cannot create access to an unexposed sensor or header.

Adding hardware may help when you need more controllable channels. A PWM PC fan controller hub or other external PC fan controller can be an option if your motherboard lacks enough suitable connections; Argus includes external controllers in its stated control model. Confirm that the controller, fans, and software are compatible before buying—an accessory does not guarantee software support.
