For most groups, Left 4 Dead 2 is the best pick for a familiar co-op zombie FPS campaign. Choose World War Z for huge hordes and cross-platform co-op, 7 Days to Die for crafting and fort-building, or Project Zomboid for slower, more deliberate survival. None is a one-to-one replacement: each emphasizes a different way to play with friends.
No More Room in Hell 2 is no longer in Early Access: Steam lists its 1.0 release date as August 11, 2026. It remains a useful reference point if you want tactical survival horror, but the alternatives below suit groups looking for different pacing, perspective, or survival systems.
How to choose a co-op zombie game
Start with the kind of session your group wants. A campaign shooter gives you focused runs and a clear end point; an open-world survival game asks you to build routines, gather resources, and make progress over longer stretches. Perspective and group size matter too: World War Z is third-person by default, while Left 4 Dead 2 is a first-person shooter.
- Campaigns and familiar co-op FPS action: Left 4 Dead 2.
- Large hordes and cross-platform co-op: World War Z.
- Crafting, exploration, and base defense: 7 Days to Die.
- Slower, persistent survival: Project Zomboid.
- Tactical horror and mission risk: No More Room in Hell 2 itself.
Best co-op zombie games compared
| Game | Best for | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|
| Left 4 Dead 2 | Campaign-based co-op FPS runs | Five campaigns, four survivors, online co-op, a dynamic AI Director, and Steam Workshop support, according to its Steam listing. |
| World War Z | Large hordes and cross-platform play | Third-person by default, up to four-player co-op, story campaigns, and class progression. Steam lists cross-platform multiplayer. PlayStation describes an optional first-person mode for Aftermath and Horde Mode XL on PS5. |
| 7 Days to Die | Survival, crafting, and fort-building | An open-world sandbox that puts preparation and construction at the center, rather than focusing on short, run-based shooter campaigns. |
| Project Zomboid | Deliberate, persistent survival | Detailed survival systems, online multiplayer with player-run servers, and local split-screen co-op. Steam labels it Early Access and says it avoids setting an ETA for 1.0. |
| No More Room in Hell 2 | Tactical survival horror | Eight-player co-op, infection, permadeath, proximity communication, and objective-based Scenario Mode. Steam lists six maps and a 1.0 release date of August 11, 2026. |
Which game fits your group?
Left 4 Dead 2: the campaign pick
Pick Left 4 Dead 2 when your group wants to enter a match, work through a campaign, and rely on team coordination under pressure. Its Steam listing describes five campaigns, four survivors, online co-op, and a dynamic AI Director that varies encounters. Workshop support also gives players access to community-made content. It is the clearest choice here if “like Left 4 Dead” means a focused co-op shooter rather than a survival sandbox.
#1 Best Overall
- FUN & EXCITING GAMEPLAY - Build defenses during the day to prepare for zombie chicken attacks at night! Gameplay flows between day & night cycles that will keep players on the edge of their seat!
- GREAT FOR FAMILIES & FRIENDS OF ALL AGES - Zombie Chickens is the perfect card game for family game night, hanging out with friends, or playing solo in a round of zombie-fighting solitaire! 1-4 players, ages 9+, gameplay lasts around 35 minutes.
- 3 WAYS TO PLAY! You can play Zombie Chickens as a COMPETITIVE, COOPERATIVE, or SOLO game! In the Competitive game, players battle to defend their farms from zombie attacks until the last player standing wins! In the Cooperative game, players band together to defend a single farm in hopes of surviving until a rescue party arrives! In the Solitaire game, 1 player battles hordes of zombie chickens to survive as many nights as possible!
- SILLY YET STRATEGIC - Each zombie has 1 or more traits (flying, invisible, climbing, bulletproof, fireproof, timid, exploding) that you must overcome in order to defeat it. For example, a flamethrower is a great defense on your farm until a fireproof or invisible zombie comes along! So choose your defenses wisely and watch out for various events that can change the course of the game!
- CAN YOU SURVIVE THE BOK-BOK-ALYPSE? Or will the zombie chickens prevail?
World War Z: the horde pick
World War Z is the better match for squads drawn to spectacular waves of zombies and class-based progression. Its Steam listing describes four-player co-op and cross-platform multiplayer, alongside story campaigns. The default view is third-person, so it will not feel like a first-person shooter in the same way as Left 4 Dead 2. PlayStation’s listing notes an optional first-person mode for Aftermath and Horde Mode XL on PS5; that platform-specific detail should not be assumed to apply to every version.
PlayStation’s World War Z listing covers its PS5 offering. Platform editions and online-play requirements can differ, so check the relevant store for the version your group intends to use.

- Face off against unlimited and increasingly difficult waves of enemies in the ultimate survival challenge.
- Fight as elite sniper, Karl Fairburne or one of EIGHT playable heroes

- See your bullets riddle the putrid insides of the undead as the X ray Kill Camera.Tactical zombie dismemberment to remove body parts to disarm or slow your targets.
7 Days to Die: the builder pick
Choose 7 Days to Die if the satisfying part of surviving is not just clearing a room, but scavenging, crafting, exploring, and turning a place into a defensible base. Its open-world structure makes preparation and construction a larger part of play than they are in a campaign shooter. That shift is substantial: expect a sandbox survival loop, not a sequence of tightly directed missions.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Project Zomboid: the slow-burn survival pick
Project Zomboid suits players who want a detailed survival sandbox and are comfortable with slower, less action-driven sessions. The Steam listing describes online multiplayer through player-run servers and local split-screen co-op. Steam still marks the game Early Access and says the developers avoid setting an ETA for 1.0, so do not choose it on the assumption that a full release date is established.

No More Room in Hell 2: the tactical-horror reference point
If the appeal is scarce supplies, high stakes, and teamwork across objectives, No More Room in Hell 2 itself remains an option. Steam lists eight-player co-op, infection, permadeath, proximity communication, and Scenario Mode, as well as six maps. Its listed 1.0 release date is August 11, 2026; descriptions that still call it an unreleased Early Access game are outdated.

Campaign runs versus open survival
Left 4 Dead 2 and World War Z organize play around campaigns and missions. 7 Days to Die and Project Zomboid make survival in an open-ended world the core activity, with resource gathering and preparation carrying more weight. No More Room in Hell 2 centers on objective-based Scenario Mode and a higher-risk survival-horror setup.
Rank #4
- Brand new rules for cooperative play
- Four new zombie figures
- Fully compatible with other Zombies!!! Editions
Perspective and horde feel
Left 4 Dead 2 is the natural choice for a familiar first-person co-op shooter. World War Z emphasizes large hordes and is third-person by default, though PlayStation describes an optional first-person mode for specific PS5 content. The choice is less about which game has the single “best” horde and more about whether your squad prefers focused shooter campaigns or a more dramatic, large-scale presentation.
Crafting and long-term progress
For crafting and constructing a base, 7 Days to Die is the direct recommendation. Project Zomboid also emphasizes survival systems, but its appeal is deliberate sandbox play rather than the same fort-building focus. Left 4 Dead 2 is the least survival-management-oriented option in this group: its draw is campaign teamwork and changing encounters.
Availability and version notes
All five games have official Steam listings, but prices and available editions vary by region and can change. Check your local storefront for current pricing and platform availability rather than relying on an old price. World War Z is also listed for PlayStation, with the cited listing covering PS5 Aftermath; console editions and online-play conditions may vary by platform and region.
