For a long-running survival campaign, start with Valheim. Choose Grounded for a story-led backyard adventure with a world friends can continue when the original host is offline. Pick Raft if your group wants ocean survival and a larger listed co-op cap. The right choice depends on group size, platform compatibility, hosting, and how much building, exploration, or horror your friends want.

Best co-op survival games for different groups

Game Best for Verified co-op details Hosting or access notes
Valheim An ongoing campaign of survival crafting, exploration, building, and boss fights Servers are capped at 10 players, according to Iron Gate’s official FAQ. Players can create a peer-to-peer session or download the dedicated-server application from Steam. Iron Gate says it does not provide official servers.
Grounded A guided, story-led adventure for a small group Play online with up to three friends, according to the official game page. Shared Worlds let players continue a world while its original host is offline. The Xbox listing says console online multiplayer requires Game Pass Core or Ultimate, sold separately.
Raft Shared resource gathering and construction on an ocean voyage, including for a larger group The Xbox listing gives a co-op range of 2–10 players and lists Xbox cross-platform co-op. The Xbox listing says console online multiplayer requires an eligible Xbox Game Pass subscription, sold separately. These details apply to that listing, not every edition.

Valheim: an open-ended shared campaign

Valheim centers on gathering resources, building outposts and farms, surviving hostile environments, and fighting monsters and bosses. Iron Gate describes it as playable solo or cooperatively and recommends playing with friends. Its FAQ lists Windows, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2, but a platform list does not establish which combinations can play together. Check cross-play compatibility for your exact versions before buying.

Grounded: a backyard adventure with a continuing shared save

Grounded shrinks its players to insect size and sends them into a backyard built around exploration, combat, tools, armor, weapons, and base building. Its Shared Worlds feature is especially useful when the group cannot rely on one person to host every session: players can continue the saved world while the original host is offline. The official Xbox listing also describes an unfolding story that players uncover together.

Raft: build and survive together at sea

Raft’s Xbox listing describes an ocean adventure built around gathering floating debris, scavenging reefs, expanding a raft into a home, and surviving dangers such as sharks. Its listed 2–10-player co-op range may suit groups larger than those looking at Grounded, but the listing does not establish compatibility across every platform or edition.

How to choose for your friend group

  1. Count the players. Count everyone who will join the same session, then check the cap for the edition and hosting setup you plan to use. The cited official information gives Grounded’s limit as up to three friends, Valheim’s server cap as 10, and Raft’s Xbox co-op range as 2–10.
  2. Match the platforms. A game appearing on several platforms does not mean every version supports cross-play with every other version. Verify the exact PC and console combinations your group owns.
  3. Decide how the world should be available. If the group needs to play when the original host is away, Grounded explicitly offers Shared Worlds that can continue without that host. Valheim documents player-created peer-to-peer sessions and a downloadable dedicated-server application; Iron Gate does not provide official servers.
  4. Choose the kind of experience. Valheim suits groups looking for an extended survival and progression campaign; Grounded adds a story-led adventure and a distinctive backyard setting; Raft emphasizes collaborative gathering and construction at sea. If your group specifically wants horror, The Forest and Sons of the Forest are candidates raised by a May 2026 editorial roundup, but confirm current official platform, player-count, and cross-play details before choosing either.
  5. Check console online requirements. The cited Xbox listings say Grounded console online multiplayer requires Game Pass Core or Ultimate and Raft console online multiplayer requires an eligible Xbox Game Pass subscription; both are sold separately. Check current terms for your region and account setup.

Good picks for two players, console groups, and beginners

For two players

All three games are plausible choices for two friends based on the cited co-op information: Grounded allows up to three friends online, Raft lists co-op starting at two on Xbox, and Valheim supports cooperative play. Choose by campaign style and hosting needs, then verify the exact platform pairing and edition rather than assuming cross-play.

For console groups

Grounded and Raft have cited Xbox store listings, including their respective console online multiplayer subscription terms. Valheim’s FAQ lists several console platforms as well as computer platforms, but the cited FAQ does not establish which combinations can play together. Check current store and developer information for each player’s version before purchase.

Zombie Chickens - Fun Family Card Games for Adults, Teens & Kids - Survival Zombie Game, 3 Ways to Play: Competitive, Cooperative & Solo (1-4 Players)
  • FUN & EXCITING GAMEPLAY - Build defenses during the day to prepare for zombie chicken attacks at night! Gameplay flows between day & night cycles that will keep players on the edge of their seat!
  • GREAT FOR FAMILIES & FRIENDS OF ALL AGES - Zombie Chickens is the perfect card game for family game night, hanging out with friends, or playing solo in a round of zombie-fighting solitaire! 1-4 players, ages 9+, gameplay lasts around 35 minutes.
  • 3 WAYS TO PLAY! You can play Zombie Chickens as a COMPETITIVE, COOPERATIVE, or SOLO game! In the Competitive game, players battle to defend their farms from zombie attacks until the last player standing wins! In the Cooperative game, players band together to defend a single farm in hopes of surviving until a rescue party arrives! In the Solitaire game, 1 player battles hordes of zombie chickens to survive as many nights as possible!
  • SILLY YET STRATEGIC - Each zombie has 1 or more traits (flying, invisible, climbing, bulletproof, fireproof, timid, exploding) that you must overcome in order to defeat it. For example, a flamethrower is a great defense on your farm until a fireproof or invisible zombie comes along! So choose your defenses wisely and watch out for various events that can change the course of the game!
  • CAN YOU SURVIVE THE BOK-BOK-ALYPSE? Or will the zombie chickens prevail?

For beginners

The available sources do not establish a measured difficulty ranking or identify one game as objectively easiest. For a group that prefers a clearer shared adventure, Grounded’s story-led framing may be a useful starting point. If your friends prefer to set their own pace through building, gathering, and exploration, consider Valheim or Raft instead; choose based on the experience your group wants rather than an unsupported claim about difficulty.
