State of Decay 3 is targeting a 2027 release, but there is no fixed date yet. For a co-op survival game in the meantime, choose based on what you want most: zombie combat and base defense, horror exploration, a world that persists between sessions, or open-world crafting. None of the options below is presented as a replacement for State of Decay’s survivor-community management.
What to expect from State of Decay 3
Xbox Wire’s June 7, 2026 gameplay-reveal article says the team is aiming for a 2027 release. Creative Director Kevin Patzelt said, “We’ve been working on this for a while and we’re aiming for a 2027 release.” That is a target, not a confirmed launch date. The reveal describes solo play or shared-world co-op for up to four players, settlement construction, maintaining a survivor community, and fighting zombies in an open-world survival sandbox. Choose the game that matches what your group wants
| Game | Best fit | What it offers | Main difference from State of Decay 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 Days to Die | Zombies, scavenging, crafting, and base defense | A zombie-survival option included in GamesRadar’s 2026 crafting guide; the guide lists PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. | It is a genre fit, not an equivalent survivor-community simulator. The cited guide does not establish crossplay details. |
| Sons of the Forest | Co-op horror exploration, crafting, and building | The Steam listing describes an open-world survival-horror game for solo or co-op play and includes co-op and base-building tags. | Its horror setting and emphasis differ from State of Decay’s survivor community and settlement focus. The cited listing is for Steam/PC. |
| Grounded | A shared world for a group | Obsidian describes it as a multiplayer survival-adventure. Shared Worlds preserve progress so play can continue when the original host is absent. | Its shrunken-backyard premise has a very different setting and tone from a zombie apocalypse. |
| Valheim | Open-world exploration and survival crafting | The official site describes survival with others in player-hosted worlds. Its support FAQ covers crossplay and says versions continue to be updated at the same pace. | Its Norse fantasy setting and exploration-and-crafting emphasis differ from State of Decay’s modern zombie community loop. |
Which game should you pick?
For zombies and base defense: 7 Days to Die
Start here if the draw is facing a zombie threat while scavenging, crafting, and building defenses. GamesRadar’s 2026 crafting-games guide includes it among zombie survival games and lists PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. Check the current store listing for your platform and edition, and confirm that everyone in your group can play together; the cited guide does not verify crossplay.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor co-op horror exploration: Sons of the Forest
Choose this if your group values survival-horror tension, exploration, crafting, and building more than managing a survivor community. The Steam listing describes surviving alone or with friends in an open world and tags the game for co-op and base building. That listing is for Steam/PC, so do not assume console availability from it.
#1 Best Overall
- Capture and Tame Dinosaurs: Discover over 100 different dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures on the island, finding ways to tame them into useful additions for your tribe's dino herd
- Survive Above All: Hunger, thirst, basic safety, and protecting yourself from the weather are all part of the game
- Harvest, Hunt and Build: Cut down trees and turn them into a basic home, which you can quickly expand into a Jurassic estate. Hunt for meat, scavenge for plants (or start your own garden!)
- Customize Everything: An extensive crafting system invites you to mix and match materials scavenged from the island, while also modifying the colors, textures, shapes, and styles
- Explore the Island: Solve the mystery of The ARK as you explore this massive island, discovering Explorer's Notebooks (filled with clues!) throughout
For a world that can continue without its original host: Grounded
Grounded’s Shared Worlds are the clearest fit here if your friends cannot always meet at the same time. Obsidian says these worlds preserve progress and can continue when their original host is absent. See Obsidian’s Grounded page for its multiplayer survival-adventure and Shared Worlds details. The feature does not make the game’s setting or tone comparable to a zombie apocalypse.
For open-world exploration and crafting: Valheim
Consider Valheim if the group wants survival and crafting in a player-hosted world, and is happy with a Norse fantasy setting rather than a modern zombie crisis. The official Valheim site describes playing with others on player-hosted servers. Its support FAQ discusses crossplay and version updates; check the current platform information against what your group owns.

Check these details before choosing
- Platforms: Confirm that the game is available on each person’s device. The cited Steam listing establishes PC availability for Sons of the Forest; the GamesRadar guide lists PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S for 7 Days to Die. These sources do not establish every candidate’s complete platform lineup.
- Crossplay: Do not infer crossplay from a game having co-op. Verify that the exact platforms in your group can play together on the current edition.
- How the world is hosted: If friends play at different times, check whether progress depends on a host being present. Grounded’s Shared Worlds specifically address continuing when the original host is absent; Valheim’s official site describes player-hosted servers.
- What you want to carry over: The shortlist covers selected parts of State of Decay 3’s announced design, such as zombies, defense, co-op, persistent shared play, or crafting. It does not establish an alternative with the same survivor-community management.
