Skull and Bones is the clearest co-op alternative if your group wants ship combat, ship builds, and shared-world events. It is not a like-for-like replacement for Sea of Thieves: Ubisoft emphasizes naval combat and progression, while Sea of Thieves is known for crew-led sandbox play and encounters with other crews. For cooperative survival and crafting, consider Windrose, currently described as an early-access game in April 2026 coverage. If you want a solo pirate adventure rather than co-op, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is a strong fit.
Which game is closest to Sea of Thieves for co-op?
Start with what your group wants to do together. Skull and Bones is the most direct choice here for coordinated naval combat and ship progression. Windrose takes a survival-and-building approach. Neither should be assumed to reproduce the specific crew sandbox and competition between crews associated with Sea of Thieves.
| Game | Best fit | Multiplayer distinction | Availability note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skull and Bones | Naval combat, ship builds, shared-world events | Ubisoft describes solo or team play and cooperative events; its page refers to an ocean of up to 20 players, not a 20-player co-op party. | Ubisoft lists a free trial on PC storefronts, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S; confirm live regional and platform availability. |
| Windrose | Co-op survival, resource gathering, and base-building | PC Gamer’s April 2026 coverage describes open-world co-op, ship combat, and boarding. | That coverage reported the game entering early access; check its current status. |
| Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag | Solo Caribbean exploration and pirate action | Campaign-oriented single-player, not a co-op substitute. | Current platform and edition availability is not established by the sources cited here. |
Skull and Bones: co-op focused on ships and combat
Ubisoft frames Skull and Bones around ship classes, loadouts, progression, and fighting at sea. You can play solo or with a team, and the shared world includes cooperative events. That makes it a sensible pick when your group’s priority is building ships and taking on naval encounters together—not recreating every part of Sea of Thieves’ crew-centered sandbox.

Windrose: co-op pirate survival and building
If you would rather gather supplies and build up a base than focus mainly on ship builds and combat, Windrose offers a different kind of pirate co-op. PC Gamer’s April 14, 2026 coverage describes resource gathering, crafting a base, repairing a ship, rescuing crew, and exploring an open world. It also describes ship-to-ship combat that can involve boarding.
That article reported Windrose entering early access. Early-access status and availability can change, so check the game’s current store listing before buying or organizing a group around it. The available coverage establishes a co-op survival direction, but not that it provides the same player-versus-player crew encounters as Sea of Thieves.

Black Flag: a solo pirate campaign, not co-op
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is worth considering if the appeal is sailing the Caribbean, hunting for treasure, diving, exploring ports, and fighting from a ship. PC Gamer and Le Monde describe those pirate-adventure elements, but this is a campaign-oriented single-player game—not a way to sail with friends in co-op.

Le Monde’s February 2025 roundup also covers Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, SteamWorld Heist II, and Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew. They broaden the genre into action, turn-based tactics, and stealth, respectively. The roundup does not establish them as direct co-op replacements for Sea of Thieves, so choose them for their distinct styles rather than expecting the same multiplayer structure.
